Are AI cover letters OK?

Yes, an AI cover letter is acceptable if every claim is true, it sounds like you and the employer allows AI help; Greenhouse allows it for its own applicants if materials are accurate.1

Written 3 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

The direct answer: three conditions

A cover letter (a covering letter in the UK, an ön yazı or niyet mektubu in Turkish) is the short letter that goes with a CV. An AI cover letter is one drafted by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or a letter tool.

It is acceptable under three conditions. Every claim is true: Greenhouse says misrepresented materials may lead to disqualification. It reads like you: MIT's career office says hiring managers recognise AI-style writing. The employer allows it: Prospects tells applicants to respect each employer's AI policy.

What employers and career offices say

Employers that accept AI help

Greenhouse, which makes an applicant tracking system and also hires, calls AI help with a resume or cover letter standard practice for its own applicants, if the materials stay accurate. Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, advises reviewing and personalising AI text.

Employers that set their own rule

The rule sits on the application page, whatever system it runs on: Workday, Greenhouse, Lever or another. Prospects says to disclose AI use where required and warns that not disclosing can disqualify an application.

Are AI cover letters obvious?

Sometimes, to a person. MIT Career Advising and Professional Development lists signs hiring managers notice in AI-written letters: dashes as punctuation, formulaic structure and polish without a human touch.

For detection software the evidence is thinner. We found no study of how often recruiters or employer tools correctly flag AI cover letters, so this page gives no figure. Liang and colleagues (arXiv, 2023) found GPT detectors consistently misclassified non-native English writing as AI-generated; they did not study hiring.

On a large online labor platform, Cui, Dias and Ye (arXiv, 2025) found an AI cover letter tool raised callback rates, but the link between a letter's fit to the posting and callbacks fell by 51%. It is one platform, so read it as a direction.

Why a cover letter sounds like AI, and how to fix it

Stock text gives a letter away: an opener such as "I am writing to apply", self-labels such as "I am results-driven", praise that fits any company, em dashes (an MIT sign) and exclamation marks. CitedCV's letter linter flags the first three in English, Turkish and German and replaces the last two.

A four-step edit that works with any tool

Read it aloud and cut any sentence you would not say. Check every number, name and date against a document. Replace one generic sentence with something you did that answers a need in the posting. Add one sentence on why this company.

Length and structure career offices ask for

Prospects and the National Careers Service describe three to five short paragraphs; Prospects adds one A4 page and a fresh letter per application. The National Careers Service pairs "Yours sincerely" with a named reader, "Yours faithfully" with a generic greeting.

Writing a cover letter from a job description: the first minute

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini turn a pasted posting into a draft in seconds; every claim is yours to check. CitedCV writes from facts on file, so the first minute is setup:

StepWhat you doWhat it costs
1Create an accountNo card. Starts with 6 credits; a letter still needs a credit pack.
2Put your facts on file: upload a CV or fill the formNo credits. Auditing your CV is free.
3Buy a credit pack, add the posting as a link, screenshot, file or textStarter: $9 once, 30 credits.
4Write the letter4 credits; Starter covers 7 letters. No letter, no charge.
5Edit by hand, export PDF, DOCX or TXTNo credits.

A free account cannot write a cover letter, and the free signup credits do not unlock it; buying any credit pack does, and the pack is paid once.

How CitedCV writes a cover letter from your facts

CitedCV, an AI CV builder, writes a cover letter in five steps.

  1. You choose the posting and, optionally, the CV it goes with, a name to address, why you want this company and your start date.
  2. Code, not the model, matches the posting's requirements to your facts and plans up to four paragraphs: fit, up to two stories from different roles where possible, and motivation only if you wrote something.
  3. The model writes each paragraph from the few facts the plan allots it, asked for 40 to 110 words, and lists the facts it used.
  4. Every number, name and date must appear in the facts a paragraph cites (the company, the role and your own answers count), and a language-model check reads the whole paragraph. A failing paragraph is rewritten up to twice, then dropped.
  5. You read the letter with each paragraph's facts one click away, edit by hand under the same check, and export.

Which country conventions the frame follows

Code, not the model, writes the greeting, subject line, opening, closing, sign-off and date format from the letter's language and region, so "To Whom It May Concern" cannot appear.

LetterGreetingSubject lineSign-off

GermanSehr geehrte Damen und Herren, or Herr or Frau and a nameBewerbung als and the roleMit freundlichen Grüßen

What happens when a fact is missing

  • No job, or nothing you did in it, on file: the page says which; nothing is charged.
  • A requirement nothing on file answers: left out, not claimed.
  • Nothing written about the company or your start date: no motivation paragraph.
  • Every paragraph dropped, or the model does not answer: no letter and no credits taken.

On thin facts the check drops text and can leave a short letter or none. The runs test the engine, not how letters fare with employers.

Who this is not for

  • You want a letter without entering facts: with no job and no result on file, CitedCV writes nothing.
  • You want a free letter: letters need a credit pack.
  • You apply where AI help is forbidden, or need a language other than English, Turkish or German.

Alternatives, and whom each fits

Rezi, Enhancv and RecastCV also offer cover letters (our comparisons, 2026-09-08). CitedCV is narrower: it writes only from your facts and drops what it cannot verify, but it needs a credit pack and covers three languages.

Limits, stated plainly

No tool can promise an interview. CitedCV does not make a letter undetectable or turn it into your voice, so read it aloud. The check tests consistency with your facts, not truth in the world: a wrong year you typed is cited faithfully. Citations are per paragraph and the exported file carries none. Nobody on our team reads German, so German letters have passed our checker but not a native reader.

Questions people ask

Is it cheating to use AI for a cover letter?

No, not by itself. Greenhouse accepts AI help from its own applicants if the materials stay accurate. It becomes a problem when the application forbids AI or the letter claims untrue things.

Is an AI-generated cover letter bad?

Not by itself. What hurts is generic or false text: MIT CAPD names formulaic structure and polish without a human touch as signs hiring managers notice. Real facts and a read-aloud edit avoid many of them.

Are AI cover letters obvious?

Sometimes, to a careful reader; MIT CAPD says hiring managers notice the signs. We found no reliable rate for recruiters or detectors, so treat any detector verdict with caution.

Why does my cover letter sound like AI?

Probably a stock opener, self-labels such as "results-driven", praise that fits any company and em dashes. Replace them with one specific thing you did for this posting, and read it aloud.

How do I generate a cover letter from a job description with AI?

Paste the posting and your real details into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and check every claim, or add the posting to CitedCV, which writes only from facts on file, for 4 credits once you have bought any credit pack.

Does CitedCV cite a fact for every sentence of the letter?

No, for every paragraph. Each lists the facts it came from, and every number, name and date in it must be in them (or be the company, the role or your answers). The exported file carries no citation marks.

Is a CitedCV cover letter free, and what does it cost?

Not free: 4 credits, after you buy a credit pack, from $9 for 30 credits, paid once. A free account has 6 credits, enough for one quick CV draft, but letters need a credit pack. Exports and hand edits use no credits.

Do I have to tell an employer I used AI for my cover letter?

Only if the application asks or the employer has a rule. Prospects says to disclose use where required; not disclosing can disqualify an application.
