Chronological, functional or hybrid CV: which one fits you?

Use a reverse-chronological CV unless your job titles misdescribe what you can do; then use a hybrid, with proven skills first and dated jobs below. A purely functional CV drops the dates and is the riskiest choice.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

Answer one question before you pick a layout

Write down the job title on the posting you want. Then write your last two job titles under it. The gap between those lines decides the format more reliably than any template gallery.

  1. Your recent titles are the same job or a step below it, such as Support Specialist applying for Support Team Lead: chronological.
  2. Your titles are honest but would make a reader file you in the wrong pile, such as Support Team Lead applying for Customer Success Manager: hybrid.
  3. You have almost no paid work in any field, for example a first-year student: chronological with education first, or the skills-based layout Prospects shows for students.
  4. You are tempted to go functional to hide something, such as a gap or a short job: read the gap guide first, because a hidden date tends to raise the question you hoped to avoid.

How each format orders the same facts

Reverse-chronological: jobs in date order, newest first

James Madison University's career centre says a chronological resume is organised around dates, is the most common format and is the one most employers prefer. Its advantage is that experience, growth and employer names are easy to follow; its drawback, in JMU's words, is that it may show gaps and does not ensure your skills stand out. Texas A&M suits it to people with growing responsibility at known organisations. Prospects calls the chronological CV the most used of all CV types, and Harvard's own guidance is reverse chronological order within every heading.

Functional: skill headings instead of jobs

A functional CV, which Prospects also calls skills-based, groups achievements under headings such as Customer onboarding or Coaching, and the employers sink to a short list near the end. JMU notes that its entries are not bound by employment dates, that it helps when you move into a different field or have limited experience, and that it takes longer to prepare. Texas A&M recommends it for stressing transferable skills. Miami University's career centre says the functional resume is not typically recommended for most of its students.

Hybrid or combination: skills first, dated jobs after

JMU describes the combination resume as one that weighs experience and skills equally, with sections for both. Miami's hybrid format highlights your skill sets and gives a brief description of each job. In practice it is a short skills block in which each skill carries one piece of evidence, followed by an ordinary dated job history.

Example: one person written three ways

Example only. Sam Carter is invented; the employers, numbers and dates are made up to show the layouts, not to be copied.

Sam has six years in software customer support and wants a customer success role. The facts are identical in all three versions; only the arrangement changes.

Version A, chronological

  • Summary: Customer support lead with six years in software support, applying for customer success roles.
  • Experience: Support Team Lead, Brightdesk Software, Bristol, Apr 2023 to Present. Ran onboarding calls for 35 new business accounts; cut average first reply time from 9 hours to 3; wrote 60 help articles.
  • Support Specialist, Brightdesk Software, Jan 2021 to Mar 2023. Handled about 40 tickets a day; trained 5 new starters.
  • Customer Adviser, Westway Telecom, Bath, Sep 2019 to Dec 2020. Kept a 92% satisfaction score on billing calls.
  • Education: BA History, University of Exeter, 2016 to 2019. Skills: Zendesk, Salesforce, Excel.

Version B, functional

  • Profile: Customer support lead moving into customer success.
  • Customer onboarding: ran onboarding calls for 35 new business accounts; wrote 60 help articles.
  • Service improvement: cut average first reply time from 9 hours to 3; kept a 92% satisfaction score.
  • Coaching: trained 5 new starters on the ticketing workflow.
  • Employment history: Brightdesk Software, Bristol; Westway Telecom, Bath. Education: BA History, University of Exeter.

Version C, hybrid

  • Summary: as in version A.
  • Skills: Onboarding, ran onboarding calls for 35 new business accounts. Service improvement, cut first reply time from 9 hours to 3. Coaching, trained 5 new starters.
  • Experience: the three jobs of version A with titles and dates, each with its remaining lines.
  • Education: BA History, University of Exeter, 2016 to 2019.

What a CV checker made of each version

On 13 October 2026 we pasted the plain text of all three versions into CitedCV's audit, the same rules as its free checker, which sorts each line into a section the way a parser would. This is CitedCV's own sectioning, not Workday's or Greenhouse's, but it shows the mechanism.

VersionDates recognisedWhere the achievement lines were filedStructure part of the score
A, chronologicalYesUnder Experience, each beside its job title and dates100 of 100
B, functionalNo: 'No dates recognised. Without them a parser cannot order your roles.'Under Experience, because unknown headings such as Customer onboarding fall back to it, with no employer or date beside them75 of 100
C, hybridYesThe three proof lines under Skills; the rest under Experience with titles and dates100 of 100

Why the functional version lost points

The checker's structure score loses 25 points for each heading or date problem, and a CV with no recognisable date is an error. Version B had no dates at all once the employment list dropped them. Its skill headings did not trigger a heading warning because Profile, Education and Skills are standard names; a functional CV that renamed those too would have lost more.

What the vendors themselves document

  • Greenhouse's list of causes for an unsuccessful resume parse includes inconsistent section formatting and incomplete job titles.
  • Workday says parsing results can vary based on resume format and order of words.
  • Neither page names chronological or functional formats; the link is through dates, titles and headings, which a functional layout moves or removes.

What career services say about each format

Pages read on 13 October 2026. A blank means the page does not discuss that format.

Where they part ways

The disagreement is about the functional CV for students. Prospects offers it as a fit for students and graduates; Miami advises most of its students against it. Both agree on why it exists: to put skills ahead of a thin or unrelated work history.

Where format choice stops mattering

  • Online application forms ask for each job with its employer, title and dates in separate fields, whatever your CV looks like.
  • Germany expects a tabular, dated Lebenslauf; the German CV format guide covers it.
  • Some visa and vetting forms ask you to account for every month, which a functional layout cannot do; the visa application CV guide covers which ones.
  • The checker test above is CitedCV's own rule set on plain text. An employer's parser may file the lines differently.

Next steps

  1. Run the one-question test at the top with your real titles.
  2. If you choose hybrid, keep the skills block to three or four lines, each with one fact, and leave the rest in the dated jobs.
  3. Make every date in the file follow one style; the dates guide shows the options.
  4. If you build the CV in CitedCV, it arranges sections in the order set for your region and always keeps a dated experience section, so it writes chronological and hybrid shapes, not a functional one.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a chronological and a functional CV?

A chronological CV lists jobs by date, newest first. A functional CV groups achievements under skill headings and pushes employers, often without dates, to the end.

Do employers dislike functional CVs?

Some career services are cautious. JMU says most employers prefer the chronological format, and Miami does not usually recommend functional resumes to its students.

What is a hybrid CV?

A hybrid or combination CV opens with a short skills section, each skill backed by a fact, and follows it with a normal dated job history. JMU says it weighs skills and experience equally.

Which CV format is best for students?

Usually chronological with education first. Prospects shows a skills-based layout for students and recent graduates, while Miami University advises most students against the functional format.

Is a functional CV ATS friendly?

Often not. In CitedCV's test the functional version had no recognisable dates and its skill headings were filed as experience with no employer beside them.

Can a functional CV hide an employment gap?

Not for long. Application forms ask for dates job by job, and a missing date invites the question. A dated line naming the gap works better.

Should I use a functional CV for a career change?

A hybrid usually serves better: proven skills first, then dated jobs. JMU and Texas A&M mention the functional format for career moves, but it removes the dates readers look for.

What is the most common CV format?

Reverse-chronological. JMU, Miami and Prospects all call it the most common or most used format, and Harvard orders entries that way within every heading.
