AI CV builder that does not make things up

An AI CV builder is software that uses a language model to draft a CV. Three kinds exist: template fillers, chat writers such as ChatGPT, and grounded builders that write only from facts you supply and cite each line.1
What an AI CV builder is
An AI CV builder takes what you tell it about your work and turns it into a CV. In the UK and most of Europe the document is called a CV; in the US and Canada it is a résumé, and the tools are sold as resume builders. This page uses CV for both.
The useful question is not whether a tool uses AI but where the words come from. That question splits the market into three kinds.
Template fillers
A template filler gives you a form and a layout. You type your jobs and dates, pick a design, and it lays the text out. Most now add a button that rewrites a bullet with a language model. The words are yours until you press that button; after it, they are the model's.
Chat writers such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
A chat writer is a general assistant given a prompt such as 'write my CV for a product manager role'. It produces fluent text from what it knows about product managers in general, not from what you did. It keeps no record of your facts beyond the chat window, so it fills gaps with plausible material.
Grounded builders that cite sources
A grounded builder writes only from facts you have entered, and every line carries a reference to the fact it was written from. When a fact is missing it asks instead of guessing. When a line cannot be traced to a fact it is removed before you see it. CitedCV is a grounded builder; its output is a cited CV.
What goes wrong with the first two kinds
Template fillers fail at layout. Chat writers fail at truth. Both fail at sounding like a person.
Invented metrics
A language model asked to quantify achievements will produce numbers whether or not it was given any. Researchers call this hallucination: output that is fluent and confident but not grounded in the input (Huang and others, arXiv, 2023). On a CV it looks like 'increased revenue by 40%' from someone who never measured revenue. An interviewer who asks how it was measured ends the conversation there.
Generic filler
Chat writers reach for the same phrases for everyone: results-driven, proven track record, passionate about, cross-functional synergies. A recruiter who reads CVs all day recognises the pattern within a line. The text is not wrong; it is empty, and empty text is what gets a CV set aside.
Two-column layouts that parsers cannot read
Template fillers sell design. Two columns, icons, skill bars and a photo look good on screen and fall apart when an applicant tracking system such as Workday, Greenhouse or Lever converts the file to plain text. The parser reads across both columns on one line, mixes dates with job titles, and the recruiter's search finds nothing. The ATS-friendly CV page lists the rest.
Four signs that a CV came out of a chat window:
- Every bullet starts with a verb and ends with a percentage, and none of the percentages appear anywhere in your records.
- A summary paragraph that could be pasted onto anyone with the same job title.
- Skills you have never used, added because they are common for the role.
- A job description rewritten in the tool's voice instead of a record of what you did there.
What to look for in an AI CV builder
Ask these six questions before you pay. A tool that answers all six in writing is a grounded builder. A tool that answers none is a chat writer with a template.
- Does it show where each line came from? You should be able to point at any bullet and see the fact, upload or interview answer it was written from.
- Does it refuse to invent numbers? Enter a job with no figures and ask for a draft. A grounded builder asks you for the figures or leaves them out; a chat writer supplies them.
- Does it export a single-column PDF and a DOCX? Both formats, one column, standard headings. Employers' systems ask for one or the other.
- Does it re-parse its own export? It should read the finished file back and confirm the text comes out in order, which is what the applicant tracking system will do.
- Does it handle your region's conventions? A US or UK CV carries no photo and no date of birth; a Turkish or German CV customarily carries a photo.
- Is pricing published? Credit costs and pack prices should be on a public page before you sign up, not revealed at checkout.
How CitedCV works, step by step
CitedCV runs the same six steps for every CV. Credits are the unit of payment: you receive 10 at signup, and more come in monthly or yearly plans.

Who it is for and who it is not for
A good fit
- You have a work history and want it written accurately, quickly, in a form an applicant tracking system can read.
- You apply in the US, UK, EU, Turkey or Germany and need the right convention for each.
- You want the interface in English or Turkish.
- A chat assistant once wrote you a number you could not defend, and you do not want that again.
Not a good fit
- You want a tool to make a thin history look thick. CitedCV cannot write what you did not provide and will not invent it.
- You need a designed portfolio with graphics. The templates are single-column on purpose.
- You need an academic CV with a long publication list in a journal style.
- You expect a guarantee. No CV tool can promise an interview.
What no AI CV builder can do
Three limits apply to every tool in this category, CitedCV included. No builder can guarantee an interview; the CV is one input to a decision people make. Applicant tracking systems do not detect AI text; they store and parse it, and a recruiter is the one who rejects generic writing. And a grounded builder cannot write what you did not provide: thin facts make a short CV, and that is the honest result.
Questions people ask
Does an AI CV builder make things up?
Chat writers do, because they write from general knowledge of the job title rather than from your record. Grounded builders such as CitedCV write only from facts you supplied and drop any line they cannot verify.
Is CitedCV just ChatGPT with a template?
No. ChatGPT writes from what it knows about jobs; CitedCV writes from what you did, attaches fact ids to every bullet, and runs a deterministic verifier and an entailment check before you see a line.
What does a CV cost on CitedCV?
A full build costs 10 credits and a quick draft 6; a line edit costs 1 and exports are free. You get 5 credits at signup. Packs are Starter (30 credits, $9), Pro (150 credits, $29) and Max (750 credits, $79).
Can an applicant tracking system tell that my CV was written with AI?
No. Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, SuccessFactors and iCIMS store, parse and search text; none run AI detection. Generic text is rejected by the recruiters who read it, not by the software.
Will an AI CV builder get me an interview?
No tool can promise that. A clear, accurate, parseable CV removes reasons to reject you; the interview depends on the role, the competition and the people reading.
Do I need to upload an old CV?
No. You can type facts into the form, upload a PDF, DOCX or TXT that is read in your browser, or answer the interview questions. Any mix of the three works.
Does CitedCV work for applications in Turkey and Germany?
Yes. It applies the conventions of the US, UK, EU, Turkey and Germany: a photo where customary (Turkey, Germany), none where not (US, UK). The interface is in English and Turkish.
What happens to a line the verifier rejects?
It is rewritten once from the same facts. If the rewrite also fails the check, the line is dropped. No unverified line is shipped.
