Care assistant CV in the UK: experience, the Care Certificate, DBS checks and the 2025 visa change
A UK care assistant CV leads with hands-on care: settings, people supported, tasks, Care Certificate progress and DBS status. Since 22 July 2025, care worker visas go only to people already in the UK who meet set conditions.1
Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides
First step: check that you can legally take the job
Before polishing the CV, check whether a UK care provider can employ you, because the visa rules for care work changed in July 2025. Care workers (occupation code 6135) and senior care workers (6136) can now be sponsored only in limited cases. This is the rule as it stood in the Immigration Rules, Appendix Skilled Worker, on 13 October 2026.
| Your situation | Can a care provider sponsor you as a care worker? | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Outside the UK with no UK visa | No. An application from abroad (entry clearance) is not possible in codes 6135 or 6136. | SW 6.1B: the application must be for permission to stay |
| In the UK on another visa that lets you work, and you have legally worked for this provider as a care worker or senior care worker for at least 3 months | Yes, by switching, if you apply before 22 July 2028. The 3 months must end on the date the provider issues your certificate of sponsorship. | SW 6.1B(a) |
| Already on a Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa as a care worker | Yes, to extend or to move to another licensed provider. | SW 6.1B(b) |
| British or Irish citizen, or other permission with an unrestricted right to work | No sponsorship needed. | Prove your right to work, GOV.UK |
The provider must also qualify
For a care job in England, the sponsor must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and carrying on a regulated activity. Private households cannot sponsor a care worker. You can look a provider up on the CQC website before you apply.
Healthcare assistants use a different code
Nursing auxiliaries and assistants (6131) are a separate code that the Health and Care Worker visa lists. It is on the Immigration Salary List across the UK, but only for roles where registered nurses or other registered healthcare professionals also work, and only for a certificate of sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026. Check the code on your offer: a care home job is usually advertised as care worker, not as 6131.
How care employers hire, and what they check
The National Careers Service profile for care workers lists four ways in: a college course, an apprenticeship, volunteering, or applying directly, in which case the employer trains you on the job. It says some employers want GCSE English and maths at grades 9 to 4, but many train applicants who have the right personal qualities. It also says time spent caring for someone you know counts as experience in a caring role.
The tasks your CV should name
- Getting to know each person’s background, interests and needs.
- Help with washing, dressing and personal care.
- Preparing food, helping people eat, and making sure medication is taken where needed.
- Supporting physical and social activities.
- Routine checks of weight, temperature and blood pressure.
- Reporting concerns to senior staff, and keeping records and care plans up to date.
Those are the day-to-day tasks the profile names. Write the ones you actually did, with the setting and the number of people, so a care manager can see your level at a glance. The profile gives typical pay of £20,000 for starters to £25,000 with experience, 35 to 45 hours a week, often on shifts, evenings or weekends.
The Care Certificate
The Care Certificate is a set of 16 standards that new health and social care workers in England are expected to cover during induction. Skills for Care, NHS England and Skills for Health updated them in March 2025 and added standard 16 on learning disability and autism. The standards are recommended, not accredited; the accredited, Ofqual-regulated option is the Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification, built on the same 16 standards.
- Understand your role
- Your personal development
- Duty of care
- Equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights
- Work in a person-centred way
- Communication
- Privacy and dignity
- Fluids and nutrition
- Awareness of mental health and dementia
- Adult safeguarding
- Safeguarding children
- Basic life support
- Health and safety
- Handling information
- Infection prevention and control
- Awareness of learning disability and autism
The joint FAQ says the employer signs off the certificate only when all 16 standards are complete, and that skills must be observed during real work. An online course alone is therefore not "the Care Certificate". The FAQ adds that the standards were not originally designed as pre-employment training, though some knowledge carries over; a new employer may use a self-assessment to find gaps.
DBS checks
The National Careers Service says care workers need to pass enhanced background checks. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check shows spent and unspent convictions and cautions plus relevant local police information; the version with barred lists also shows whether you are barred from the role. The employer requests it.
| DBS point | What GOV.UK says (read 13 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Enhanced check, or enhanced with barred lists | £41, usually around 14 days, cannot be speeded up |
| DBS Adult First, for adult care providers | An extra £6; usually within 2 days says whether you can start under supervision |
| Update Service | £15 a year; register within 30 days of the certificate being issued; lets the certificate move with you between roles |
| Time abroad | A DBS check does not cover time lived outside the UK; employers check that country’s rules |
For time spent in Türkiye, GOV.UK’s overseas criminal records guidance names the document as the Adli Sicil Kaydı. Have it ready if a provider asks for it.
Sample care experience block
Below is a block written for a UK reader. The names, numbers and dates are placeholders; keep only what is true for you. UK CVs carry no photo or date of birth, which the UK CV format page explains.
| CV part | Sample text |
|---|---|
| Header line | Right to work: Graduate visa valid until March 2028. Enhanced DBS (adult workforce), March 2026, on the Update Service. |
| Profile (2 lines) | Care assistant with 14 months in residential dementia care and 6 months of home care. Care Certificate completed; confident with hoists, food and fluid charts and digital care records. |
| Job 1 | Care Assistant, [care home name], Leeds. 04/2025 to present. 32-bed residential home for older adults living with dementia. |
| Job 1 bullets | Personal care, dressing and continence support for 8 residents per shift. Recorded food and fluid intake on [system] and flagged two weight losses to the nurse. Used a hoist and slide sheets after moving and handling training. Ran a weekly music session for 10 residents. |
| Job 2 | Home Care Worker, [agency], Leeds. 10/2024 to 03/2025. Visits of 30 to 60 minutes to 6 clients a day. |
| Job 2 bullets | Prompted medication as set out in each care plan and recorded it. Prepared meals for clients with soft-food diets. Reported a missed visit risk to the coordinator the same day. |
| Family care | Carer for a family member after a stroke, Ankara, 2022 to 2023: daily personal care, mobility support and appointments. |
| Training | Care Certificate, all 16 standards, signed off by [provider], 06/2025. Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification (in progress, expected 2026). Basic life support, 2025. |
| Languages | English (B2), Turkish (native): supported Turkish-speaking residents at mealtimes. |
Why each line is written this way
- Setting and size first (residential, dementia, 32 beds) because care managers hire for a setting.
- Numbers per shift or per day show workload without claiming outcomes you cannot prove.
- Use the medication verb your care plan and training allowed: "prompted" and "administered" mean different things to a care manager.
- Family caring counts, according to the National Careers Service; label it as unpaid so it is not mistaken for a job.
- The Care Certificate line says who signed it off, because only the employer can.
Lines that weaken a care CV
| Vague | Specific |
|---|---|
| Passionate about caring for others | Supported 8 residents per shift with personal care and meals |
| Care Certificate (online) | Care Certificate standards 1 to 9 completed; workplace observation booked with [provider] |
| DBS checked | Enhanced DBS (adult workforce), issued 03/2026, on the Update Service |
| Good communication skills | Used picture cards with a non-verbal resident to choose meals |

Visa rules for care work have changed several times since 2024. Read the linked GOV.UK pages again before you rely on them.
Limits of this page
- The CQC and Care Certificate details here are for England; the other UK nations have their own arrangements, which we did not check.
- Registered nurses: NMC registration and the nurse CV are covered on the NHS nurse page.
- Sponsorship in general, the salary rules and the right-to-work line for other jobs are on the international applicants page.
- The visa file itself does not ask for a CV; the visa application page explains which UK routes do.
- Offers from abroad that promise a care worker visa now conflict with the rule above; the overseas job scams page lists the warning signs.
Next steps
- Confirm your row in the first table, and check the provider on the CQC register.
- List every care setting you have worked in, paid or unpaid, with dates and numbers.
- Write down exactly which Care Certificate standards you have completed and who signed them off.
- Find your DBS certificate number and register for the Update Service if you are still within 30 days.
CitedCV can write this CV in English with UK conventions from the settings, tasks and training you enter, and it builds each line only from those facts. It will not add a Care Certificate or DBS line you have not given it.
Questions people ask
What is the UK CV format for a care assistant?
Keep it short and in this order: a right-to-work and DBS line, a two-line profile, care jobs with setting, size and tasks, then training such as the Care Certificate. No photo or date of birth.
Can I still get a care worker visa from abroad?
No. Since 22 July 2025 the Immigration Rules allow care worker sponsorship only for applications made inside the UK by people who meet the conditions in SW 6.1B.
Who can still apply for a care worker visa in the UK?
People already in the UK who have worked legally for the sponsoring provider in the role for 3 months and apply before 22 July 2028, and people already sponsored as care workers.
Do I need the Care Certificate before applying for care jobs?
No. It is designed to be completed during induction with your employer, who signs it off once all 16 standards are met. List any standards already done.
What DBS check does a care assistant need?
An enhanced check, according to the National Careers Service; employers may request the version with barred lists. GOV.UK lists both at £41.
Should I put my DBS on my CV?
Yes, if you have one: give the level, workforce, issue date and whether it is on the Update Service. Never put the certificate number on the CV.
Does caring for a family member count as care experience?
Yes. The National Careers Service says time caring for someone you know counts as experience in a caring role. Label it as unpaid family care.
What is the difference between the Care Certificate and the Level 2 qualification?
The Care Certificate standards are recommended and not accredited. The Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate is an Ofqual-regulated qualification built on the same 16 standards.
