CV for a visa application: which visa routes ask for one, and what it must show

Only some visa routes ask for a CV. Canada’s employer-specific work permit, the UK Global Talent endorsement and one Dutch service-provider permit name it; the UK Student and Skilled Worker visas do not. Check your route’s official checklist.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

First step: search your route’s official checklist for the word

Open the document list for the exact permit you are applying for, on the government site or the consulate page, and search it for 'CV', 'résumé', 'curriculum vitae' and, for Germany, 'Lebenslauf'. Write down the exact wording and any limit attached to it, such as a page count. If none of those words appears, the route does not ask for a CV, and what it does ask for is usually a form history or a set of documents.

Use the checklist your online account generates

Canada says its online portal produces a personalised checklist for each applicant, and that the generic PDF checklist only helps you prepare. If your account shows a document slot named résumé, that is the one that counts for you, even if a friend’s list looked different.

Read the sub-category, not only the visa name

Within one country the answer changes by route. In the UK the Student and Skilled Worker pages list no CV, while both Global Talent endorsement routes we read do. In the Netherlands, the highly skilled migrant form lists none, while the form for contract service providers asks for one.

How a CV, a form history and supporting documents fit together

Visa files describe your past in up to three ways. A CV is a document you design yourself. A form history is a set of fields the authority designs, with its own period and rules. Supporting documents, such as reference letters, payslips or a social security record, are issued by others and prove what the first two say.

Canada’s Schedule A is a form history, not a CV

Permanent residence applicants complete Schedule A (IMM 5669). Its personal history section asks what you did and your status in each country since age 18 or for the past 10 years, whichever is most recent, starting with the latest period. IRCC says: do not leave any gaps in time, and unexplained periods may delay processing. The fields are fixed; you cannot add a summary or skills.

Where the two meet

IRCC’s note for applicants who have not worked in the past 10 years says the résumé or CV provided with the application will help verify the personal history. So when a route asks for both, they are read against each other, and a date that differs between them is a question the officer can ask.

What a visa CV must show that a job CV does not

  • Every period, including unemployment, study, military service and caring for family. Schedule A asks for exactly this; a CV in the same file should not contradict it.
  • Month and year for every start and end date, so each line can be matched with a reference letter, payslip or contract.
  • The job title written as it appears on the employer’s letter or contract. Add your own description after it, not instead of it.
  • The same spelling of your name, employers and schools as in your passport and certificates.
  • Work that has no paper trail, labelled as such, so the officer does not find it missing from a record.

Visa routes and what their official checklists ask for

We opened each page on 12 October 2026 and recorded what it lists. "No" means the word CV, résumé or curriculum vitae does not appear in the document list for that route.

Reading the Canada row correctly

The employer-specific list puts the résumé next to reference letters and pay stubs. Those three describe the same jobs, so treat the résumé as the summary the other two must confirm: same employers, same months, same titles.

Reading the Global Talent rows correctly

Here the CV is part of the case for being a leader or potential leader in your field, and the page limit is strict. Put dated roles, publications, products or talks that the recommendation letters and evidence documents can refer to, and leave out anything older that adds nothing to that case.

Germany in one line

The German missions in Türkiye publish one sheet per national visa category, and the German national visa CV page goes through every sheet that asks for a CV, including the ones that require it without gaps.

Limits of this page

  • United States: the State Department and US embassy pages refused our requests on 12 October 2026, so we could not check what US visa categories ask for and left the US out of the table.
  • Schengen rules in general: we could not open the EU Visa Code on EUR-Lex that day; the Schengen rows come from the Dutch checklists for Türkiye only.
  • It does not decide eligibility. A CV that meets the checklist does not make you eligible for a route.
  • Degree comparisons and credential evaluations are a separate step with their own page.

Next steps

  1. Find your route in the table and open its official page.
  2. If it asks for a CV, list every period from the date the form or route starts counting, with month and year, and the document that proves each one.
  3. Write the CV from that list, using the titles and names on your documents.
  4. If your degree needs an official comparison, get it before you finalise the education line.

CitedCV can write the CV from facts you enter and confirm, in English, Turkish or German, so the dates and titles on the page are the ones you typed from your documents. You still compare the result with your file before you upload it.

Questions people ask

Do I need a CV for a visa application?

Only if your route’s checklist lists one. Canada’s employer-specific work permit, both UK Global Talent endorsement routes we read and the Dutch contract service provider permit do; the UK Student and Skilled Worker visas do not.

Do I need a CV for a Canada work permit?

Yes, for an employer-specific work permit applied for outside Canada: IRCC always asks for a résumé, reference letters, proof of past work and proof you meet the job’s requirements. Open work permits do not need employment documents.

Is a CV needed for a UK student visa?

No. The GOV.UK document list for the Student visa names a passport and a CAS, plus money, ATAS, TB or parental documents depending on your situation, and no CV.

What is the curriculum vitae for Canada immigration?

For permanent residence the main history is Schedule A, a form covering the past 10 years or since age 18, whichever is most recent, with no gaps. IRCC says a CV you provide helps verify it.

Do I need a CV for a student visa application?

Usually not. Neither the UK Student visa list nor Canada’s study permit list includes one. Any CV your university asked for belonged to the admission application, not the visa file.

How long can the CV for a UK Global Talent visa be?

Up to 3 sides of A4, typed. GOV.UK sets that limit for both the digital technology and the research peer review endorsement routes.

Does a visa CV need to match my other documents?

Yes, because they describe the same periods. Canada pairs the résumé with reference letters and pay stubs, so employers, months and titles should be the same in all of them.

Can I explain gaps on a visa CV?

Yes, and you should. Put the period on its own line with what you did, such as job searching, caring for family or a course; Canada’s Schedule A asks you to leave no gaps at all.
