How to put freelance work on a CV without it looking like a gap
List freelance work as a job: a title for what you did, "Freelance" or your trading name as the employer, real dates, then the main clients or projects with results. Long freelance careers get their own section.1

First, list every client and project with dates
Before choosing a layout, open your invoices, contracts or platform history and build a plain list: client, sector, what you delivered, start and end month, and any number you can stand behind. Freelance careers are hard to reconstruct from memory because the work comes in pieces; the paperwork already has the dates.
UAL's careers team puts the principle plainly: your freelance work is as valuable as any other paid work opportunity. The list is how you prove it.
Is it freelance or a job in disguise?
GOV.UK lists signs that you are running a business, among them having several customers at the same time, deciding how, where and when you work, and charging an agreed fixed price. If most of those fit, present the work as your own business. If one client set your hours for two years, you may be better describing it as a contract role with that client.
Three layouts and when each fits
The University of Strathclyde's careers service describes three ways to show self-employment. The right one depends on how long you freelanced and how varied the work was.
| Layout | Fits when | How it looks |
|---|---|---|
| Inside Experience | Freelancing sat between employed jobs | Same format as other jobs; Strathclyde suggests 'Self-Employed', 'Entrepreneur' or 'Business Owner' in place of a job title |
| A Freelance Work section | You have freelanced or contracted for years | A short summary of the type of work, then each organisation with project dates and, where useful, the outcome |
| A Projects section | Paid, voluntary and personal projects share one skill set | Each project named descriptively with dates, its aim, the skills used and an outcome |
Our view on the title line
Strathclyde's 'Self-Employed' label is safe, but a title that names the work, such as 'Freelance UX Designer', matches the words in a job advert and is clearer to a recruiter scanning the page. Use your trading name as the employer if you have one.
Do not inflate the title
Strathclyde warns against calling yourself the CEO unless you actually reported to a board of directors. A sole trader is a freelancer, consultant or owner, not a chief executive.
Worked example: a freelance designer
An invented person, labelled as an example. Priya Nair worked in-house for four years, then freelanced for five. She uses the Freelance Work layout because the freelance period is now her main experience.
Freelance UX and Product Designer, Nair Design (sole trader), Manchester and remote. May 2021 to present. Fourteen clients in fintech, health and public services; typical engagement 6 to 16 weeks.
- Regional building society (2024, 12 weeks): redesigned the mortgage application flow; completion rate rose from 41% to 58% in the first quarter after launch.
- NHS trust digital team (2023, 10 weeks, via agency): ran 18 patient interviews and delivered the appointment-booking prototype used in the procurement brief.
- Seed-stage fintech, name under NDA (2022 to 2023, retainer): built the design system used across web and mobile; cut new-screen build time from days to hours by the team's own estimate.
- Six smaller projects for local businesses: websites and brand refreshes, portfolio links on request.
Why the example is built this way
The heading line answers the questions a recruiter asks about freelancers: how many clients, what kind, how long the engagements ran. The bullets then pick the three most relevant clients, which follows UAL's advice to move your two or three most relevant jobs into the experience section for each application.
Naming clients you cannot name
- Describe the client by sector and size: 'a Series A health-tech company, 60 staff'.
- Keep the result and the dates; those are yours to state even when the name is not.
- Write 'name under NDA' once so the reader does not assume you are hiding something.
- Do not attach work samples a contract keeps confidential; describe them instead.
Prospects suggests asking for testimonials or reviews when a job ends and using contracts that protect both you and the client. A short quote from a named client, with permission, is stronger evidence than any adjective you write about yourself.
Platform work, agencies and small gigs
Prospects names Upwork, Fiverr and Toptal among the places freelancers find work. On a CV, the platform is the channel, not the employer: write the client and the result, and add the platform rating only if the advert values it.
- Group many small jobs into one line with a count and a range of sectors.
- Show agency placements as 'via [agency]' after the end client, as in the NHS line above.
- Leave out work unrelated to the role you want, unless it fills a period you would otherwise have to explain.
Proof if an employer asks
GOV.UK says you must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year. Your registration and returns, invoices and contracts are the paper trail behind the CV dates. In Türkiye the equivalent trail is the serbest meslek makbuzu; the Turkish version of this page explains it. Tax questions belong with an accountant; this page only uses the records as proof of dates.

Where this page stops
- Whether you are legally self-employed or an employee for tax purposes is a separate question; HMRC and an accountant answer it.
- Creative portfolios have their own conventions; the CV points to the portfolio rather than replacing it.
- If you are leaving freelancing for a permanent role, say why in the cover letter, not on the CV.
Next steps
Choose the two or three clients that match each advert; the guide on tailoring a CV to a job description shows how to read the advert first. The skills guide covers which skills to name next to the work.
CitedCV can turn your client list into a CV draft in English, Turkish or German, using only the facts you give it; if a date or result is missing it asks rather than filling the gap.
Questions people ask
How do I put freelance work on my CV?
Treat it as a job: a title for the work, "Freelance" or your trading name as employer, dates, then the main clients and results. Long freelance careers can have their own section.
What job title should I use for freelance work?
Use a title that names the work, such as Freelance Copywriter. Strathclyde also accepts 'Self-Employed' or 'Business Owner'; avoid CEO unless you reported to a board.
Should I list every freelance client?
No, list the two or three most relevant clients for each application and summarise the rest with a count and the sectors.
How do I list clients under an NDA?
Describe them by sector and size, keep the result and dates, and write 'name under NDA' once so the reader understands why.
Does freelance work count as experience?
Yes, it counts as paid experience. UAL's careers team says freelance work is as valuable as any other paid work opportunity.
How do I show Upwork or Fiverr work on a CV?
Name the client and the result, with the platform as the channel. Group many small jobs into one line with a count.
Should I put freelance work in a separate section?
Yes, if you freelanced for years or for many organisations. If it sat briefly between jobs, list it inside Experience instead.
