Executive CV: scope first, then results, then the board

An executive CV opens each role with a scope line (revenue or budget owned, headcount, geography, reporting line), follows with two to four results, and lists board and non-executive roles in their own block with the time each takes.1

Write the scope line for your current role first

Before the profile, before the skills, write one line for the job you hold now that answers four questions: how much money you are accountable for, how many people report into you, where, and to whom you report. A board member or a search consultant reads that line to place you. Everything else on the page is evidence for it.

Example: 'P&L £140m revenue; 1,150 staff across 4 countries; 6 direct reports; reporting to the Group CEO.' If a number is confidential, give a range or a percentage of group revenue, and be ready to explain it in the first conversation.

Why scope comes before results

A 12% cost reduction means one thing in a £5m budget and another in a £500m one. The scope line gives every result below it a scale. Without it, the reader has to guess, and a senior reader will not guess generously.

What a top executive is hired to do

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics profile of top executives lists the duties a board measures you against. Using them as a checklist shows which parts of your record the CV has not yet proved.

Duty in the BLS profileWhat the CV line should show
Setting and carrying out goals, policies and proceduresA strategy you set, with the year and the measurable outcome
Directing financial and budget activitiesBudget or P&L size, and the margin or cost result
Negotiating or approving contractsThe largest contract or deal, its value and its effect
Appointing department heads and managersLeadership team you built: how many hires, retention
Analysing financial statements and performance indicatorsThe KPI you changed, from what to what
Finding ways to cut costs and improve performanceA programme with its saving and its timeline

BLS adds that chief executives usually need extensive managerial experience in the organisation's specialty, and that many top executives are promoted from lower-level management. A short earlier-career line can show that path without spending half a page on it.

Worked example: a COO entry

An invented person, labelled as an example. Daniel Mercer has been chief operating officer of a mid-sized food manufacturer for four years. The entry below is the top third of page one.

Chief Operating Officer, Northfield Foods Ltd, Leeds. Jan 2022 to present. Scope: operations budget £62m; 5 plants, 1,150 staff; 6 direct reports; reporting to the CEO; member of the executive committee.

  • Closed one loss-making plant and moved its volume to two others, cutting unit cost by 11% by 2024 with no lost customer contracts.
  • Rebuilt the operations leadership team: four of six heads hired externally, all four still in post.
  • Negotiated a five-year energy contract worth £18m, fixing 70% of the group energy cost through 2028.
  • Led the board paper and delivery for a £9m automation programme; payback ahead of plan in month 26.

Earlier roles in two lines

'Operations Director, Northfield Foods, 2017 to 2021: three plants, 600 staff. Plant manager and earlier roles at two manufacturers, 2004 to 2017.' The detail sits in the most recent role, where the reader looks for it.

The board and non-executive block

For a board seat in a UK listed company, the 2024 UK Corporate Governance Code sets what the nomination committee checks. It applies to financial years beginning on or after 1 January 2025. Two provisions decide what your CV should state plainly.

Provision 15: time commitments

Before appointment, significant commitments should be disclosed with an indication of the time involved. Full-time executive directors should not take on more than one non-executive directorship in a FTSE 100 company or other significant appointment. So list each current board role with its expected days a year.

Provision 10: independence

The Code lists circumstances that may impair a non-executive's independence: employment by the company in the last five years, a material business relationship in the last three, cross-directorships, representing a significant shareholder, and more than nine years on the board. Dates on your board lines let the committee check these quickly.

The table is part of the same invented example. A board CV is often two pages for the executive career plus this block; Prospects allows three pages for people in high-level roles.

Working with executive search firms

Many senior roles are filled through retained search. The Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC) publishes a Candidate Bill of Rights for people approached by its members.

  1. Check whether the firm is an AESC member; the Bill of Rights suggests this as the first step.
  2. Ask the consultant, associate or researcher whether they have an exclusive assignment for this search. AESC says candidates may be well served to walk away if the answer is no.
  3. Expect confidentiality: the Bill of Rights says the firm protects the confidentiality of your interest.
  4. You can ask to have your name removed from a firm's database.
  5. Concerns about a member firm's conduct can go to the AESC CEO, according to the same page.

What a consultant needs from your CV

A clean document they can forward to a client with little editing: scope lines, results with numbers, board roles with dates, and no confidential figures you would not want a competitor to read. Keep a short one-page profile as well for first contact.

Who this page is not for

  • First-time managers: a scope line with three reports and no budget reads thin. Lead with results instead.
  • Founders of small companies: a CEO title on a five-person business needs the scope line even more, so the reader sees the real size.
  • Public-sector senior posts: these usually use their own application form and competency statements.
  • Academic leadership: a university post uses an academic CV with every publication.

Next steps

Adjust the order of results for each role you pursue; the guide on matching a CV to a job description covers how. If a search firm will upload the file into its own system, check it reads cleanly; the ATS-friendly CV guide covers layout.

CitedCV can draft the CV from the facts you give it in English, Turkish or German, and every line links back to those facts. It does not know your company's numbers; it writes scope lines only from figures you enter.

Questions people ask

How long should an executive CV be?

Two pages for most executives, three at most. Prospects allows three pages for people in high-level roles; a board block can sit on the last page.

What is a scope line on an executive CV?

It is one line under each job title giving the budget or P&L, headcount, geography and reporting line. It sets the scale for every result below it.

Should I put confidential revenue figures on my CV?

No, not exact ones if they are confidential. Use a range, a percentage of group revenue or a public figure from the annual report.

How do I list non-executive director roles?

Give them their own block with the organisation type, start date, committees and days a year. The UK Code asks boards to weigh these time commitments.

How many board roles can a full-time executive hold in the UK?

One non-executive directorship in a FTSE 100 company or other significant appointment, under Provision 15 of the 2024 UK Corporate Governance Code.

How do I get noticed by executive search firms?

Keep a forwardable CV and a one-page profile ready, and check any firm that approaches you. AESC suggests asking whether the search is exclusive.

Should a CEO CV have a personal profile?

Yes, but keep it to three lines: sector, the scale you have run and the next role you want. The scope lines carry the proof.
