German CV format: how a Lebenslauf is built

A German CV, the Lebenslauf, is a tabular, reverse-chronological list with month and year dates on the left, usually one or two pages, closed with place, date and signature and sent as a text-based PDF.1

What a Lebenslauf is

Lebenslauf means "course of life", and the German document reads like one: every period since school sits on its own row, dated, in a column you can scan from top to bottom. The Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, BA) calls it the most important document in an application in its Bewerbungskompass for job seekers, May 2026 edition, and says many HR staff look at it first.

LMU Munich's career service sums up the German-market version in a few rules: one to at most two pages, a two-column tabular layout, newest information first, consistent dates such as mm/yyyy, and date and signature at the end. The rest of this page takes those rules one at a time and adds what changes when the applicant comes from Türkiye.

What this page leaves to other guides

Choosing between an English and a German CV, the photo and the personal-data lines, the Anschreiben and the complete application folder each have their own guide in this series, linked at the end.

Start here: rebuild your timeline in months

Before you open a template, write your history as a plain list of month ranges. The format exposes any month you cannot account for, so fix the timeline first and the layout second.

  1. List every job, degree, school, course and longer break since you left secondary school.
  2. Give each one a start and end month in the form 09.2019 or 09/2019, and pick one form for the whole document.
  3. Sort the list so the current or most recent item is on top within each section.
  4. Mark any stretch longer than about three months that has no entry; you will name it in one line later.
  5. Collect the paper behind each line (diploma, employment letter, course certificate). German employers often ask for these Zeugnisse with the CV.

How the tabular layout works

Two columns, made with tab stops rather than nested tables

"Two-column" in a Lebenslauf means a narrow date column on the left and the content on the right, not a two-column page. The BA's 2026 guide warns that many companies let software (it says ATS scanners) sort applications first, and advises no nested tables, clear headings such as Berufserfahrung and Kenntnisse, and personal details in the body text rather than the page header, which such software often does not read. For the overall layout it suggests paragraphs and tab stops instead of complicated tables.

Newest first in every section

The BA says it is usual to start with your current job; LMU calls the order a-chronological, meaning new information comes first. Inside Education the same applies: your master's sits above your bachelor's.

Dates in month and year

The BA tells applicants to give periods with month and year every time, because years alone look unclear and invite questions. 2019 – 2021 could mean three months or three years; 11.2019 – 01.2021 cannot.

One page, two at most

LMU gives one to a maximum of two pages. The BA does not set a CV length but gives a rule of thumb for the whole application, letter, CV and attachments together: about ten pages at most. A graduate usually fits on one page; ten years of work fits on two once old school details are cut.

Place, date and signature

The BA's 2026 checklist ends the CV with "Ort, Datum und Unterschrift nicht vergessen", and its sample CVs close with the city, the date written out and the signature underneath. LMU lists date and signature at the end as a basic rule. Use the city you live in now, even if it is in Türkiye, and the date you send the application.

The file

Send a PDF exported from your word processor. The BA says not to print and scan, and notes that Word files can look different on the recipient's computer; LMU asks for a text file, not an image file. How the CV joins the letter and certificates in one file is covered in the guide to German application documents.

Section by section, with a sample line for an applicant from Türkiye

The order below follows the BA's 2026 structure for people with work experience. Students and fresh graduates can move Studium above Berufserfahrung, as LMU's sample does. The sample person is invented: Elif, a civil engineer in İzmir with four years of site experience.

SchulbildungHighest school leaving certificate only; the BA lists primary school as outdated.09.2012 – 06.2016 Anadolu Lisesi, İzmir, Abschluss: Lise Diploması

Keep Turkish names as they are written, with ğ, ş and ı, and add a German gloss in brackets only where the reader needs it, as with the degree name above. Write the country after a Turkish town once, so an HR reader in Germany does not have to guess.

Why German CVs show no gaps

Because the left column runs month by month, an empty stretch is visible at a glance. The BA's 2018 edition listed Lückenlosigkeit (no gaps) among the marks of a good application. The 2026 edition is softer: a CV has to be honest rather than perfect, and short breaks of two or three months usually need no explanation.

Longer periods without work should still get a short, factual line. The BA gives these examples, which you can use as row titles:

  • arbeitsuchend (looking for work), ideally with what you did in that time
  • Pflege von Angehörigen (caring for a relative)
  • Weiterbildung or berufliche Neuorientierung (training, change of career)
  • Sabbatical, Ehrenamt, Praktikum or Selbststudium (sabbatical, volunteering, internship, self-study)

Periods that are typical for applicants from Türkiye

Military service, a year preparing for KPSS or a master's entrance exam, or months spent on German courses before moving are all part of the timeline. Name each in one line with its dates instead of leaving a hole; a line such as "10.2021 – 06.2022 Intensivkurs Deutsch A1 bis B1, Ankara" answers the question before it is asked.

What the sources say, and how the advice changed

All three documents below were read on 12 October 2026. The two BA guides come from local employment agencies (Rheine in 2018, Ahlen-Münster in 2026) and are published on arbeitsagentur.de; the 2026 edition says its hints are not rigid rules.

Where this format stops

  • Applications to a university or through uni-assist follow the programme's own rules; the guide to a tabular CV for a master's covers them.
  • A CV for a visa file has to match the documents in that file; the national visa guide explains what the missions check.
  • An employer's online form replaces your layout with its fields. Paste the same dated lines into it, and upload the PDF where the form allows.
  • Austria and Switzerland use the word Lebenslauf too, but none of the sources here speak for them.

Next steps and other ways to build it

  • Your local Agentur für Arbeit: the BA guide says its career information centres (BiZ) have staff who read your application without obligation and help at the application computers.
  • Your university career service, if you study in Germany: LMU, for example, publishes a sample German CV.
  • A word processor template, if you set the date column with tab stops and check the PDF text can be selected.
  • CitedCV, if you want the Lebenslauf written in German with German conventions from facts you confirm. Its templates are single column with no tables, so each date sits on the line with its entry rather than in a separate column.

Then decide the CV language, settle the photo and personal lines, and write the Anschreiben; each has its own guide below.

Questions people ask

What is the German CV format?

A tabular Lebenslauf: personal details, an optional short profile, experience, training, education and skills, each with month and year dates on the left, newest first, ending with place, date and signature.

How long should a German CV be?

One page, two at most. LMU Munich gives that range, and the BA suggests about ten pages for the whole application including letter and certificates.

Do I have to sign my German CV?

It is expected, not a legal rule. Both BA guides and LMU end the CV with place, date and signature; for a PDF, insert a scan of your signature above your typed name.

Is a German CV reverse chronological?

Yes, the newest entry comes first in each section. The BA says it is usual to start with the current job, and LMU calls the order a-chronological.

How do I write dates on a German CV?

Use month and year for every period, for example 03.2022 – 08.2024 or 03/2022 – 08/2024, and keep one style. The BA says years alone look unclear.

Do I need to explain every gap in a German CV?

No, breaks of two or three months usually need no explanation, according to the BA in 2026. Name longer periods in one factual line, such as job seeking or a language course.

Is there a German CV template I can use?

Yes, the BA and university career services publish samples, and LMU offers a sample CV as a PDF. Use one with a date column built from tab stops, not nested tables.

Should I send my German CV as PDF or Word?

PDF, exported from your word processor rather than scanned. The BA notes that Word files can display differently on the recipient's computer.
