Internship CV for the Netherlands, for students from Türkiye

A Dutch internship CV leads with your programme, your dates and hours, and what the stage must cover. Interns from Türkiye also need a work permit from the host, who must pay at least half the adult minimum wage.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

First: ask your faculty for a stage plan

For a student enrolled abroad, the Dutch host company has to apply for a work permit, and UWV asks it to attach a stage plan in steps, issued and approved by your educational institution. Without that plan the application is incomplete, so get it before you send CVs, not after an offer.

  1. Ask your department or internship committee (staj komisyonu) whether it will issue a stage plan for an internship abroad, and in English.
  2. Agree the learning goals, the length in weeks and the tasks you should do.
  3. Get an English proof of enrolment (öğrenci belgesi) or, if you have graduated, a copy of your diploma with an English or Dutch translation.
  4. Write the period and the learning goals into the top of your CV, so the host sees at once that the paperwork is ready.

Stage types and the stagevergoeding

The Dutch word for an internship is stage, and the intern is a stagiair. The government's business portal, Ondernemersplein, separates a stage, where learning comes first, from a leerbaan, where a student works under an employment contract and goes to school about one day a week.

TypeWhat it isPay
MeeloopstageA shadowing or orientation stage, often a compulsory part of a programmeNo legal duty to pay a stagevergoeding
AfstudeerstageA graduation stage at the end of a programme, often compulsoryNo legal duty to pay, unless a collective agreement (cao) says so
Stage with regular workThe intern does ordinary work rather than learning tasksThe intern is entitled to the statutory minimum wage
Leerbaan (bbl)Work plus an mbo or hbo programme, usually one school day a weekEmployment contract; a minimum wage applies to bbl students
Intern from outside the EEA with a TWV or GVVAAny of the above, hosted for a student enrolled abroadAt least 50% of the minimum wage for a 21-year-old, as a permit condition

The last row is the one that matters from Türkiye. Ondernemersplein says a Dutch host is not obliged to pay a stipend, but UWV makes at least half the adult minimum wage a condition of the work permit. The minimum wage for workers aged 21 and over is €14.99 gross per hour from 1 July 2026, so the floor is about €7.50 per hour. Ondernemersplein also lists a planned law change requiring a stagevergoeding, with no start date yet.

UWV conditions for an hbo or wo intern enrolled abroad

  • You are 18 or older.
  • The stage does not replace a regular job.
  • You follow a programme abroad at hbo or wo level (a Turkish university programme).
  • Your income is at least 50% of the minimum wage for a 21-year-old.
  • The host arranges safe and clean housing for you.
  • The host sends the stage agreement with the stipend, signed by or for the employer, your proof of enrolment or diploma, and the stage plan.

For a student at mbo level, UWV adds that the stage must be needed to complete the programme and asks for a statement from the school. The intern permit is valid for at most one year.

Visa appointments in Türkiye

Netherlands Worldwide says short-stay visas for the Netherlands are handled at VFS Global centres in Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Bursa, Edirne, Gaziantep, Istanbul and Izmir, that you book your own appointment rather than through an intermediary, and that you can apply up to 6 months before travelling. For a stay over 90 days, the IND says the MVV and the residence permit are applied for together, usually by the sponsor in the Netherlands.

Erasmus+ placements

The IND has a separate permit for gaining work experience under an EU programme. If your university offers an Erasmus+ traineeship in the Netherlands, ask its international office which route it uses before you apply.

What a Dutch intern CV puts first

Leiden University's career service lists the parts of a CV and adds three points that help a student. It suggests a separate internships section when an internship is relevant, calls extracurricular activities especially important when you have little or no work experience, and warns that not everyone understands what a level like C2 means. The structure of a Dutch CV in general is on the Dutch CV format page.

Three lines a host looks for

  • Availability: exact dates, number of weeks, full time or part time, and whether the stage is compulsory for your degree.
  • Learning goals: two or three, in the words of your stage plan, so the host can see the fit.
  • Permit status: one factual line saying you are a Turkish citizen enrolled in Türkiye and that the host would apply for the TWV or GVVA.

Languages, explained

Write the level and what it means in practice: "English: B2 (IELTS 6.5, 2026), lectures and reports in English". For Dutch, even A1 is worth listing with the course and start date.

Why it is built this way

The stage sought and learning goals rows answer the host's first questions: when, how long and what for. The project and internship rows carry the only numbers, each with a unit and a period. The permit row turns a possible worry into a known procedure, with UWV's terms. The Turkish staj appears as an internship with its length in working days, because that is how the faculty counts it.

Who this page is not for

  • EU and EEA students: no TWV is needed, though the host still makes agreements with you and your school.
  • Graduates looking for a first job rather than a stage: see the orientation year page.
  • Applicants to a Dutch master’s: the master’s CV page covers Studielink and admission documents.
  • Students under 18: other signatures and rules apply.

Next steps

  1. Get the stage plan and the English proof of enrolment from your faculty.
  2. Write the stage sought, learning goals and permit rows first, then fill the rest of the one-page CV.
  3. In each application, mention that the host would apply for the TWV or GVVA and that your stage plan is ready.
  4. Add a short motivation letter naming the department and what you want to learn there.

CitedCV can write the English intern CV from your courses, projects and part-time jobs, with EU conventions, keeping each line tied to what you entered. It does not apply for permits.

Questions people ask

How do I get an internship in the Netherlands from Türkiye?

Find a host that accepts interns from abroad and send a CV with your dates and stage plan. The host then applies for a TWV or, for over 90 days, a GVVA.

Do I need a work permit for an internship in the Netherlands?

Yes, if you study outside the EEA: the host applies to UWV for a TWV, or to the IND for a GVVA if the stage lasts over 90 days.

Is an internship in the Netherlands paid?

Not necessarily for Dutch students, but for an intern from Türkiye on a work permit the host must pay at least 50% of the minimum wage for a 21-year-old.

How much is the minimum stagevergoeding for foreign interns?

About €7.50 gross per hour from 1 July 2026: half of the €14.99 minimum hourly wage for workers aged 21 and over.

What is the difference between a meeloopstage and an afstudeerstage?

A meeloopstage is a shadowing stage; an afstudeerstage is a graduation stage at the end of a programme. Both are often compulsory parts of a programme.

Can I do an internship in the Netherlands after graduating?

Yes, as a work-experience place, if you earned an hbo or wo level diploma no more than 2 years ago; the host applies for the permit.

Do I need a visa for a 2-month internship in the Netherlands?

Yes, as a Turkish citizen you need a short-stay visa, applied for at a VFS Global centre in Türkiye, and the host needs a TWV.

What should an internship CV for the Netherlands include?

Your programme and expected graduation, exact stage dates and hours, learning goals, projects, part-time work, extracurricular roles, explained language levels and a permit line.
