Engineer CV for the Netherlands: titles, recognition and project lines
On a Dutch engineering CV, write your foreign degree as it was awarded, add ir. or ing. only if DUO has granted it, and describe each project with the NEN or EN standard, the tool, the scope and your share.1
Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides
Start here: decide what goes in front of your name
Dutch law protects two short engineering titles, not the job. Article 7.20 of the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW) gives the title ingenieur, abbreviated ir., to graduates of a university (WO) master's in technology or in agriculture and the natural environment, and the same word abbreviated ing. to graduates of a higher professional (HBO) bachelor's in those fields. The abbreviation goes before the name. Using a WHW title without the right to it is an offence under Article 435 of the Dutch Criminal Code, punishable by a fine.
A degree earned abroad is treated differently. Article 7.23 lets you use a foreign degree in the Netherlands in the same way as in the country that awarded it, and lets the minister allow a Dutch title instead when the programme is at least equivalent to a Dutch one. DUO handles that request, free of charge.
| Your situation | What to write on the CV |
|---|---|
| Turkish lisans in engineering, no DUO decision | The degree as awarded: "BSc (Lisans) Mechanical Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, Türkiye, 2019". No ir. or ing. before your name |
| Turkish yüksek lisans in engineering, no DUO decision | "MSc (Yüksek Lisans) Civil Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Türkiye, 2021". Still no ir. before your name |
| DUO has granted ir. or ing. | You may write it before your name; DUO says you then choose between the Dutch title and your foreign degree |
| Job titles such as Mechanical Engineer | The WHW articles we read regulate titles before the name and say nothing about job titles; we found no official statement either way, so use the title from your contract |
How the Dutch title and degree checks work
Two separate offices look at a foreign engineering degree, and they answer different questions. Do not confuse them on your CV.
| DUO: Dutch title | IDW: credential evaluation | |
|---|---|---|
| Question answered | May you use ir., ing. or another Dutch title? | Which Dutch education level is your diploma comparable to? |
| Who evaluates | DUO, which decides which title, if any, fits | Nuffic for higher education (SBB for vocational) |
| Cost | Free | €148.83 per diploma |
| Needed to work? | No; it only concerns the title | Usually not mandatory, but an employer may ask for it |
| Result on the CV | The title before your name | One phrase after the degree line |
Is engineering a regulated profession in the Netherlands?
The government's own examples of protected professions are dentist, primary school teacher, nurse, speech therapist, ship's officer, train driver, company security officer, lawyer and architect. Engineer is not among them. IDW tells you to check the European Commission's database of regulated professions for the Netherlands before applying, and to go to the competent authority first if your profession is listed.
IDW evaluation for a Turkish engineering diploma
- Apply online at Mijn IDW; one diploma per application, and no originals by post unless IDW asks.
- For a Turkish higher education diploma, IDW wants a copy of the front and the back of the diploma, plus the transcript or diploma supplement.
- For a master’s, also upload the bachelor’s diploma and its transcript.
- Documents in Turkish need a certified translation by a sworn translator in the Netherlands or another country; if your university issued an English version, upload that instead.
- Do not upload apostilles. The fee is €148.83, paid after you submit.
- IDW currently describes about 6 working weeks before the first check and about 8 working weeks of evaluation after the file is complete.
Residence permit: one line here
Normally only an employer recognised by the IND as a sponsor can apply for a highly skilled migrant permit. For Turkish employees the IND makes an exception: no recognised sponsor is required, and you may apply yourself once you have a job, although the IND decides faster when a recognised sponsor applies. The highly skilled migrant page covers the salary criteria and the rest of that route.
What a Dutch engineering employer reads
We found no survey of what Dutch engineering recruiters look at first, so this page claims none. It works from the rules Dutch engineering is built on. The Building Decree (Besluit bouwwerken leefomgeving, Bbl) and the Environment Regulation (Omgevingsregeling) name the standards a building or installation must meet. A project line that names them tells the reader which rulebook you already know.
Standards Dutch law names, by discipline
| Discipline | Standard | Where the law names it | Edition in force on 13 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical, low voltage | NEN 1010, the Dutch implementation of the HD-IEC 60364 series | Bbl Articles 3.106 and 4.199 | 2015 + C2:2016 + A1:2020 |
| Structural, new build | NEN-EN 1990 and the material Eurocodes, e.g. NEN-EN 1992 for concrete | Bbl Articles 4.12 and 4.14 | NEN-EN 1992-1-1: 2011 + C2:2011 + A1:2015 + NB:2016 + A1:2020 |
| Structural, existing buildings | NEN 8700, assessment at the verbouw (renovation) or afkeur (rejection) level | Bbl Article 3.9 | 2011 + A1:2020 |
| Floor areas | NEN 2580, used for gross and usable floor area | Bbl definitions | As listed in the Omgevingsregeling |
NB in an edition stands for Nationale Bijlage, the Dutch National Annex. If you designed to Turkish rules, name the TS standard or code you actually used, with its number, and do not claim a NEN standard you have not worked with. For machinery, the European standard EN ISO 13849-1:2023 on safety-related parts of control systems is current; it is not specific to the Netherlands, but writing the required performance level (PLr) shows you can do the safety part of a design.
Tools, scope and your share
- The software and what you did in it: modelling, calculation, drawings, simulation.
- A scope the reader can picture: floor area, span, power, throughput, number of drawings.
- Your part and the team size, so a reader can tell design work from review work.
- Membership of a professional chamber, such as a TMMOB chamber, with its full name in English.
Two regions, as their own bodies describe them
Brainport Eindhoven describes itself as a technology region of 21 municipalities and about 800,000 inhabitants, with High Tech Campus Eindhoven, the TU/e campus and Brainport Industries Campus, and lists focus areas including micro and nano electronics, integrated photonics, additive manufacturing and systems engineering. The Port of Rotterdam Authority calls the port a logistics hub and an industrial complex and says it lets sites mainly to storage and transhipment companies and to the chemical and petrochemical industries, including energy producers. Mechatronics and precision engineering CVs fit the first description; process, electrical and civil CVs fit the second.
Three project lines, before and after
The before lines are typical of CVs translated straight from Turkish. The after lines are in English; if the vacancy is in Dutch, use the Dutch versions below. Every number, tool and year is a placeholder showing the form. Write only figures you can prove.
| Discipline | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Responsible for mechanical design of automation equipment. | Designed a gripper module for a wafer-handling robot in SolidWorks; specified its safety functions to EN ISO 13849-1:2023 (PLr d); revised tolerances cut rejected parts from 2.1% to 0.4%; team of 3, my share: module design and FMEA. |
| Electrical | Prepared electrical projects for industrial buildings. | Designed the low-voltage installation of a 3,200 m² distribution centre to NEN 1010: 14 sub-distribution boards, cable sizing and selectivity in Ecodial, connection of a 120 kWp PV system; passed the initial inspection with no findings. |
| Civil | Worked on structural analysis of existing buildings. | Assessed the structural safety of a 1974 concrete parking deck to NEN 8700 at afkeur level, with NEN-EN 1992-1-1 and the Dutch National Annex; modelled in SCIA Engineer; proposed CFRP strengthening of 6 beams instead of demolition. |
Why each after line reads better
Each one opens with the engineering act (designed, assessed), names the rule set a Dutch inspector or client would use, gives a unit, and ends with something checkable: a defect rate, an inspection result, a decision taken. The civil line also shows the separate NEN 8700 route that the Bbl sets for existing structures, which a Turkish CV rarely names.

Limits of this page
- Architects are a protected profession with their own register; this page does not cover them.
- We did not read every sector rule. Gas, high-voltage and offshore work have further standards and certificates.
- Salary thresholds, the orientation year and the 30% ruling sit on the sibling pages, not here.
- Software engineers: the developer CV page covers stacks, GitHub and sponsors.
Next steps
- Write your degree line exactly as awarded and remove any ir. or ing. you have not been granted.
- If you want the Dutch title, apply to DUO; if an employer wants a level comparison, apply to IDW. Allow months for IDW.
- Rewrite your three strongest projects in the after form, naming the standard you really used.
- Note whether each employer is on the IND sponsor register (faster decisions) and write a motivation letter for each role.
CitedCV can write the English CV from the projects, standards and figures you enter, using EU conventions, and drops any line it cannot trace back to those facts. It does not decide your title; DUO does.
Questions people ask
Can I use the title ir. with a Turkish engineering degree?
Only if DUO grants it. Until then, write your degree as it was awarded in Türkiye; WHW Article 7.23 lets you use it in the same way as there.
Is engineer a regulated profession in the Netherlands?
Not in the government's list of example protected professions, which names architect but not engineer. IDW advises checking the European Commission database before you apply.
What is the difference between ir. and ing.?
The ir. title belongs to a university (WO) master’s in technology or agriculture; ing. to a higher professional (HBO) bachelor’s in those fields, under WHW Article 7.20.
Do I need a Nuffic evaluation to work as an engineer in the Netherlands?
Usually not. IDW says an evaluation is usually not mandatory but an employer may ask for one; it costs €148.83 per diploma.
How long does an IDW diploma evaluation take?
Roughly 14 working weeks if nothing is missing: IDW describes about 6 working weeks before the first check and about 8 weeks of evaluation once the file is complete.
Which NEN standards should a civil engineer CV mention?
Only those you used. Dutch building law names NEN-EN 1990 and the Eurocodes for new structures and NEN 8700 for assessing existing ones.
Should my engineering CV for the Netherlands be in Dutch or English?
Follow the vacancy. If it is in English, an English CV is the natural reply; Dutch versions of your key project lines help for Dutch-language roles.
How do I apply for engineering jobs in the Netherlands from Türkiye?
Send a CV with standard-based project lines and a motivation letter for each vacancy. As a Turkish citizen you do not need a recognised sponsor, but sponsors get faster IND decisions.
