Lying on your CV: what employers can check and what it can cost
Most CV lies can be checked: degrees, employers, dates and titles are verified through references, screening firms and official records. The usual cost is a withdrawn offer or dismissal; UK and US law can also treat some lies as crimes.1

Check your CV for ATS problems, no account needed
Drop a PDF, DOCX or text file, or paste the text. You get a score, the problems a parser trips on, and your CV as a parser files it.
Runs in your browser. The file and its text never leave this device.
Before you apply: read your CV the way a checker would
A screening firm or a referee does not read your CV for tone. It takes each line that names something checkable, such as a degree, an employer, a date, a title or a licence, and compares it with a record. Doing that pass yourself takes ten minutes and tells you which lines would survive it.
- Mark every line that names a qualification, an employer, a start or end month, a job title or a licence. These are the record-backed lines.
- Next to each, write the document that proves it: a degree certificate, a contract, a payslip, a reference letter, a registration number.
- Mark the lines that only a former manager could confirm, such as team size, budget or a result. These are the reference-backed lines.
- Anything left with no document and no person behind it is a claim. Keep it only if you could explain it in detail at interview.
- Correct any line where your wording is stronger than the record, before you send the CV anywhere else.
What can be checked, line by line
The table maps common CV claims to the route an employer would use to verify them in three countries. No row is guaranteed to be checked for every job; any row can be. Sources are listed at the end and were read on 13 October 2026.
| Claim on the CV | United Kingdom | United States | Türkiye |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree, grade and dates of study | HEDD, the degree verification service run by Jisc, confirms the award, grade and attendance dates, with your consent | Education is on the FTC list of what a background check may cover | YÖK graduation record on e-Devlet; barcoded e-Devlet documents can be verified by barcode number |
| Employers and dates | A basic work reference gives job title and dates of employment (Acas) | Employment history appears in employment reports (CFPB; FTC) | The SGK service record lists insured workplaces and periods |
| Job title and scope | A detailed reference can cover skills, experience and reasons for leaving (Acas) | Employment history in the report; questions at interview | Reference call and the work certificate an employer must give a leaver (İş Kanunu art. 28) |
| Criminal record | Basic, standard, enhanced or enhanced with barred lists DBS check, depending on the role | Criminal and other public records may be in the report (FTC) | Criminal record extract from the Ministry of Justice service on e-Devlet |
| Professional licence | The regulator's public register (see the job guides) | The state licensing board's register | The professional chamber or ministry register |
| Languages and technical skills | A test or a conversation in that language at interview | Same | Same; a language exam result if you cite one |
A reference or a register entry checks a fact, not your wording. "Led the migration" against a former manager who remembers you contributing to it is still a mismatch, even when the dates are right.
How each check works
UK references
Acas says an employer is generally not legally required to give a reference, except where it has promised one in writing, for some FCA- or PRA-regulated financial roles, or under an agreement such as a settlement. A basic reference is a short factual summary such as job title and dates; a detailed one can add skills, experience, relevant disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. Whatever is given must be accurate and fair and must not mislead. Acas advises asking for references at the job-offer stage, after a conditional offer and with the applicant's permission.
UK criminal record checks
GOV.UK lists four levels of Disclosure and Barring Service check: basic (unspent convictions and conditional cautions), standard (spent and unspent convictions and cautions), enhanced (adds relevant local police information) and enhanced with barred lists. A certificate has no official expiry date, and a DBS check does not cover time the applicant lived outside the UK.
UK degree checks
HEDD, which calls itself the UK's official degree verification hub and is part of Jisc, lets employers, agencies and universities confirm a person's place of study, award, grade and attendance dates. Enquirers need proof of the person's consent. Its site says it holds details of 471 recognised UK institutions and 243 bogus ones, which is what an invented or purchased degree runs into.
US background checks under the FCRA
The FTC says a background check may cover employment history, education, criminal and other public records, financial or credit history and public social media activity. When an employer uses a background reporting company, it must tell you in a separate document and get your written permission. You can refuse, but you may not get the job. Before rejecting you because of the report, it must give you a copy and a Summary of Rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act; afterwards it must name the reporting company, say that company did not make the decision, and tell you that you can dispute errors and get a free copy within 60 days.
Records in Türkiye
Turkish employers lean on the applicant's own e-Devlet records: the SGK service record of insured employment, the YÖK graduation record and, where relevant, the criminal record extract. The Turkish version of this page covers them in detail, with the Labour Act article that applies when a hire turns out to rest on false information.
The legal risk, from the law texts
In most cases the consequence is employment-related: the offer is withdrawn or the job ends. Criminal law comes in at the far end. The texts below were read on legislation.gov.uk, Cornell's Legal Information Institute and mevzuat.gov.tr on 13 October 2026. Whether a particular CV meets any of these definitions is for prosecutors and courts, not for this page.
England and Wales: Fraud Act 2006
Section 2 makes it fraud to dishonestly make a false representation intending to make a gain or cause a loss. A representation is false if it is untrue or misleading and the person knows it is, or might be. It may be express or implied, and it counts as made when submitted to any system designed to receive communications, with or without human intervention, which covers an online application form. Section 5 limits gain and loss to money or other property. Under section 1, the maximum on conviction on indictment is ten years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
United States: statements to the federal government
18 U.S.C. § 1001 covers knowingly and wilfully making a materially false, fictitious or fraudulent statement in a matter within federal jurisdiction, with up to five years' imprisonment. OPM's guidance on the Declaration for Federal Employment (OF 306) says false statements may be grounds for not hiring or for ending an appointment and may be punished by fine or imprisonment. For private employers, the FCRA governs how the check is run, not what happens to a lie it finds.
Türkiye: Labour Act and Penal Code
Article 25(II)(a) of Labour Act 4857 lets an employer end the contract without notice if the worker misled it when the contract was made, by claiming qualifications they did not have or by giving untrue information. Article 26 sets the window: six working days from learning of it and at most one year from the act, with no one-year limit where the worker gained materially. Forged documents are a separate matter: the Penal Code punishes using a forged official document (article 204, two to five years) and forging and using a private document (article 207, one to three years).
Framing a fact versus changing it
Most people are not tempted to invent a degree. The risk sits in small upgrades that feel like presentation. The test is whether the record, or the person who was there, would describe the fact the same way.
| Honest framing | Becomes misrepresentation when you write |
|---|---|
| Acting team lead, 3 months, while the post was vacant | Team lead |
| Contributed to migrating 12 services to a new cloud account | Led the migration of 12 services |
| BSc Economics, coursework completed, degree not awarded | BSc Economics |
| German: B1, used for customer emails | German: fluent |
| Sales Assistant, Mar 2024 to Jun 2024 | Sales Assistant, 2024 to 2025, to cover a gap |
| Invoice processing in SAP for one business unit | SAP S/4HANA implementation |
The same upgrades are what a chat model adds when asked to make a line stronger; the guide on why AI CV builders hallucinate explains the mechanism. For dates, the guides on employment gaps and short-term jobs show how to present the real ones.
If a false line is already out there
- Correct the master copy of your CV first, so the line cannot travel to the next application.
- If you are mid-process with an employer, send the recruiter the corrected CV with one sentence, such as "I have corrected my end date at Northgate to May 2024". A correction before the check reads very differently from a discrepancy found by it.
- Make your LinkedIn profile and any application forms match the corrected version.
- Never alter a certificate, a reference letter or a record to fit the CV. That is the step that moves the matter into forgery law.
- If you are already employed and worried about a past application, get advice from a lawyer or, in the UK, from Acas before acting.
Limits of this page
- It is not legal advice. The Fraud Act sections quoted apply in England and Wales; Scotland has its own law, and Northern Ireland reads the summary penalty differently.
- The FTC notes that city or state laws may affect whether, or when, an employer can ask about criminal or credit history. Check your state.
- Visa and immigration forms carry their own declarations and penalties; the visa application CV guide covers what they ask.
- Regulated jobs (finance, health, teaching, security) add their own checks, set out in the job guides.
Next steps
- Run the five-step pass at the top of this page on your current CV and fix any line marked as stronger than its record.
- If a gap is what tempted you to stretch a date, use the employment gap guide; if a layoff is behind it, see the guide on a CV after redundancy.
- Drop the corrected file into the free checker on this site to confirm dates are recognised and one month format is used throughout.
- CitedCV writes each line from facts you confirmed, attaches the ids of those facts to the line and drops a line whose numbers or names it cannot match to them. That keeps the CV traceable; it cannot tell whether the facts you typed are true.
Questions people ask
What happens if you lie on your CV?
Usually the offer is withdrawn or, if the lie surfaces after hiring, the job ends. In Türkiye the Labour Act allows dismissal without notice for misleading the employer at hiring; forged documents and some false statements can also be crimes.
Is lying on a CV illegal in the UK?
It can be. Section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006 covers dishonest false representations made to gain money or property, with up to ten years on indictment. Whether a given CV qualifies is for prosecutors and courts.
Is lying on a resume a crime in the US?
On a federal application it can be: 18 U.S.C. 1001 covers materially false statements to the federal government, with up to five years. With private employers the usual result is a lost offer or job.
Do employers actually check degrees?
Many can, cheaply. In the UK, HEDD verifies award, grade and dates with your consent; in the US, education is on the FTC list of background-check items; in Türkiye, the YÖK graduation record is on e-Devlet.
What does a reference check reveal in the UK?
At minimum, often job title and dates of employment, according to Acas. A detailed reference can also cover skills, experience, reasons for leaving and recent relevant disciplinary matters, and must be accurate and fair.
Can I be fired later if they find a lie on my CV?
In Türkiye, yes: article 25 of the Labour Act allows termination without notice, within six working days of the employer learning of it. For US federal jobs, OPM says false statements may be grounds for ending an appointment.
Will a background check show a job I left off my CV?
It may. US employment reports can include employment history, and in Türkiye the SGK service record lists every insured job. Leaving a job off a CV is not lying, but denying it when asked is.
Is it lying to call an acting role by the full title?
Yes, if the reader would take it as the permanent post. Write "Acting team lead, 3 months" instead; the former manager giving your reference will describe it that way.
