Skilled trades CV for Germany: recognition and CV lines

To use a Turkish vocational qualification in a German trade, ask the chamber (Handwerkskammer for crafts, IHK FOSA for industry) for an equivalence decision under the BQFG, and list each Turkish certificate on a German CV with its recognition status.1

First, choose the German occupation you will be compared with

Recognition never asks whether your certificate is "good". It compares it with one German reference occupation. The Handwerkskammer Konstanz explains that this reference qualification is fixed in the application by agreement between you and the chamber, and that the current German qualification is the benchmark. Pick it before you write the CV, because every trade line should speak to that occupation.

The federal government's recognition portal, run by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), has an Anerkennungs-Finder that names the German reference occupation and the responsible office for your trade and the town where you want to work.

An electrician can match two different German occupations

German electrical work is split between industry and craft. IHK chambers list Elektroniker/in für Betriebstechnik as a dual industrial occupation of 3.5 years; IHK Bremen gives that length. Electrical installation in buildings is a craft occupation handled by the Handwerkskammern. If you wired houses in Türkiye, the craft side is your likely match; if you maintained machines in a factory, look at the industrial one.

Handwerkskammer or IHK FOSA

For craft occupations the regional Handwerkskammern decide, as the Bremen service page states, with IHKs responsible in some cases. For occupations comparable to an IHK occupation, IHK FOSA decides as the nationwide competence centre of 76 Industrie- und Handelskammern.

How the equivalence procedure runs

  1. Prepare the file listed in § 5 (1) BQFG: a tabular list of your training and jobs in German, proof of identity, your foreign training certificates, proof of relevant work experience where needed, and a declaration that you have not applied before.
  2. Have the training and experience documents translated by a publicly appointed or sworn translator (§ 5 (2) BQFG). IHK FOSA accepts such translators from Germany or abroad.
  3. If you live outside the EU, show that you intend to work in Germany, for example with proof of contact with employers (§ 5 (6) BQFG).
  4. The chamber confirms receipt within one month and says which documents are missing (§ 6 (2) BQFG).
  5. It decides within three months of receiving the complete file; it may extend that once, with reasons (§ 6 (3) BQFG).
  6. If you cannot produce documents for reasons outside your control, the chamber can test your skills instead through work samples, technical interviews or practical and theory tests (§ 14 BQFG).

Your German CV is part of the legal file

The first item in § 5 (1) BQFG is a tabular list of completed training and jobs in German. The Handwerkskammer Konstanz builds it into its application form, and the Bremen service page asks for a detailed tabular CV in German. Write it once, carefully, and send the same dates and job titles to employers. A chamber and a company comparing two versions of your past is the last thing you need.

Partial equivalence is a result you can use

When a chamber finds essential differences, the decision must also describe the qualifications you do have and what the differences are (§ 7 (2) BQFG). Relevant work experience can close those gaps (§ 4 (2) BQFG). With a partial decision you can take an adaptation course; § 16d AufenthG gives a residence permit for such a qualification measure for up to 24 months, extendable by up to 12 months to a maximum of three years, usually with at least A2 German.

Do you need recognition to work at all

Not always. The Bremen service page states that craft occupations are not regulated at journeyman level, so an employer may hire you without a decision. The visa is a different matter: a residence permit as a skilled worker with vocational training (§ 18a AufenthG) requires, under § 18 (2) AufenthG, that the equivalence of the qualification has been established. One alternative is § 6 BeschV, which admits people with at least two years of relevant experience in the last five years, a state-recognised foreign qualification of at least two years of training, and a salary of at least 45 percent of the pension insurance contribution ceiling (or a collective-agreement employer).

Ustalık is not automatically Meister

§ 50c HwO lets a chamber find a foreign qualification equivalent to the Meisterprüfung in a licensed craft. The Handwerkskammer Konstanz adds that full equivalence gives the right to be entered in the Handwerksrolle but not to use the title Handwerksmeister or Handwerksmeisterin. So the word Meister does not belong on your CV as a title, even after a positive decision.

Turkish vocational documents to German recognition: step table with CV lines

The middle columns come from Turkish Law No. 3308 on vocational education and from the German Crafts Code (HwO). The CV lines are written for an invented electrician from Izmir; the chamber names and dates are placeholders for your own decision.

Rules behind those lines

  • Keep the Turkish name of each certificate, then add a plain German description. The chamber will match the line to the translated document.
  • Write the recognition status with the chamber and the month: applied, partly equivalent, or fully equivalent. Leave it out only if you have not applied.
  • Do not write Geselle or Meister as your title. A full decision makes the qualification equivalent; it does not award the German certificate, as the Handwerkskammer Konstanz points out.
  • Describe experience in the tasks of the German reference occupation. The law lets proven experience make up for training differences, so these lines do real work in the procedure.

Limits of this route

  • University degrees are assessed differently; the Blue Card and degree recognition page covers anabin and the ZAB.
  • The procedure is not open to people with no vocational qualification at all, the Handwerkskammer Konstanz notes. A German Ausbildung may be the better path; see the Ausbildung CV page.
  • Professional drivers and nurses follow their own rules and have their own pages.
  • Chambers set fees case by case. Bremen and Konstanz both say costs depend on the effort, and translations come on top. Ask for an estimate before you apply.
  • Immigration rules change; check the linked laws and chamber pages before you apply.

What to do after the decision arrives

Add the decision to the CV line of the certificate it covers, and attach the decision to applications. German employers also expect written references from past jobs; the Arbeitszeugnis page explains how to present Turkish reference letters, and the application documents page covers the order of the full file.

CitedCV can write the trades CV in German with German conventions from the facts you enter, including the Turkish certificate names and the recognition status, and it asks when a date is missing.

Questions people ask

How do I get my Turkish vocational diploma recognised in Germany?

Apply to the responsible chamber for an equivalence decision under the BQFG: a Handwerkskammer for crafts, IHK FOSA for IHK occupations. Include a German tabular CV, ID, certificates with sworn translations and proof of experience.

Is a Turkish meslek lisesi diploma recognised in Germany?

It can be, through the same chamber procedure. The chamber compares it with a German training occupation and decides full, partial or no equivalence within three months of a complete file.

Can I work as an electrician in Germany without recognition?

An employer may hire you, because craft occupations are not regulated at journeyman level. For a skilled-worker visa under § 18a AufenthG, however, equivalence must normally be established.

Is a Turkish ustalık belgesi the same as a German Meister?

No, not automatically. A chamber can find it equivalent to the Meisterprüfung under § 50c HwO, which allows entry in the Handwerksrolle, but not the title Handwerksmeister.

How long does recognition take in Germany?

Up to three months after the chamber has the complete file, extendable once. The chamber must confirm receipt within one month.

How much does recognition of a vocational qualification cost?

There is no single fee. Chambers charge by effort, and sworn translations and certified copies cost extra, so ask your chamber for an estimate.

Do I need a German CV for the recognition application?

Yes. § 5 BQFG lists a tabular overview of your training and jobs in German as the first required document.

What if I lost my Turkish certificates?

Check the e-Devlet certificate service first. If papers cannot be produced for reasons outside your control, § 14 BQFG lets the chamber assess your skills through work samples and interviews.
