Data analyst CV example with SQL, BI tools and impact lines

A data analyst CV shows which business questions you answered, the SQL and BI tools you used to answer them, and what someone decided or changed because of your analysis. Tools without a decision attached read as a course list.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

First job: write the decision under every query

Open a spreadsheet with one row per analysis, report or dashboard from the last three years. Most analysts can list the tables they queried; far fewer can say who acted on the result. That second column is what turns a data analyst CV from a tool inventory into evidence.

  1. Column A: the question in plain words, as the requester asked it ("why did repeat orders fall in March?").
  2. Column B: the data and tools: source tables, row counts, SQL dialect, the BI tool that carried the result.
  3. Column C: who used it: a team, a manager, a weekly meeting, a pricing committee.
  4. Column D: what changed: a decision, a budget moved, a process stopped, hours of manual work removed.
  5. Delete rows where column D stays empty after honest thought. Keep them for interviews, not for the CV.

Five to eight surviving rows usually fill two jobs on the CV. If fewer survive, the gap is real information: ask your manager what happened after your last three reports before you apply.

What hiring managers screen for in analyst roles

The UK National Careers Service profile for data analyst-statisticians lists tasks that map almost line for line onto a CV: gathering and organising data, checking data quality and removing exceptions, finding patterns and trends, presenting findings, and storing data in line with data protection rules. Prospects names the tools directly: SQL and Excel for querying and cleaning, Power BI or Tableau for dashboards, and Python or R for some roles.

Degrees, apprenticeships and other ways in

The National Careers Service lists statistics, mathematics, economics, operational research and psychology degrees, a T Level in Digital Data Analytics, and Data Technician (Level 3) and Data Analyst (Level 4) apprenticeships in England. Prospects adds that graduates of other subjects get in with demonstrable analytical skills. If your degree is in history or biology, the CV has to show the analysis early: a project line above education, not a hopeful sentence in the summary.

Turning a dashboard into a business impact line

An impact line has four parts in a fixed order: the action, the data and tool, the audience, and the change. Recruiters skim the first words, so the verb and the result must carry the line even if they read nothing else.

Weak lineWhy it is weakStronger line
Built dashboards in Power BINo audience, no change, no sizeBuilt the weekly Power BI stock dashboard for 14 store managers; overstock write-offs fell 11% over two quarters
Wrote complex SQL queriesComplex is a claim, not a factRewrote the churn query with window functions in PostgreSQL; run time fell from 40 minutes to 3, so finance got figures before the Monday meeting
Responsible for reportingDescribes a duty, not an outcomeReplaced 9 manual Excel reports with one Looker explore; about 6 analyst hours a week freed
Analysed customer dataEvery analyst did thisSegmented 220,000 loyalty accounts by purchase gap; the CRM team used the segments for a win-back campaign

When nobody told you the money figure

Analysts often never see the final revenue number. Use the closest measured change you do know: time saved, errors removed, a meeting that now uses your figure, a decision that was taken. "The pricing team adopted the model for 3 categories" is honest and specific. Inventing a revenue figure is not, and it collapses at the first interview question.

Your share when the team shipped it

If an engineer built the pipeline and you wrote the logic, say so: "Specified the metric definitions and validated the output against finance totals." Sharing credit precisely makes the rest of the line more believable.

How to write SQL and BI tools on the CV

  • Name the dialect where it matters: PostgreSQL, BigQuery, T-SQL, Snowflake. A recruiter searching for BigQuery will not match "SQL".
  • Describe depth with techniques, not stars: joins across several sources, window functions, CTEs, query tuning.
  • Name one BI tool per dashboard line. Listing Power BI, Tableau, Looker and Qlik together suggests shallow use of all four.
  • Put Python or R next to the task it did: a forecast, an automated report, a statistical test.
  • Keep Excel if the posting mentions it. Prospects lists it as a core analyst tool, and it is still where many requesters want the answer.

A portfolio when your work is confidential

Prospects suggests a portfolio built on open datasets that shows the question, the cleaning, the method and how you communicated the result. One published analysis with a short write-up beats three notebooks with no conclusion. Never upload an employer’s data, even anonymised, without written permission.

Example only. Leyla Arslan is invented, and so are her employers and figures. The shape is the point: each line ties a tool to a result, and the skills block repeats only what the lines already prove.

Profile

Data analyst with four years in retail and e-commerce. Daily SQL (PostgreSQL, BigQuery) and Power BI; Python for automation and forecasting. Works with merchandising and finance teams on stock, pricing and customer retention.

Data Analyst, an online grocery retailer, 2023 to present

  • Built the daily Power BI stock dashboard used by 14 category managers; overstock write-offs fell 11% across two quarters after weekly reviews moved onto it.
  • Moved 9 Excel reports to scheduled BigQuery tables and one Power BI model, freeing about 6 analyst hours a week.
  • Defined the shared "active customer" metric with finance and marketing, ending three conflicting counts in board packs.
  • Tools: BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Power BI (DAX, Power Query), Python (pandas), dbt.

Junior Data Analyst, a home furnishings chain, 2021 to 2023

  • Reconciled online and in-store sales feeds each month; found a duplicated returns file that had overstated returns by 2.3%.
  • Produced the weekly promotion report for 60 stores in Excel and SQL; the trading team used it to cut two underperforming promotion types.
  • Tools: SQL Server (T-SQL), Excel, Tableau.

Skills block for the same CV

SQL: PostgreSQL, BigQuery, T-SQL (window functions, CTEs, query tuning). BI: Power BI, Tableau. Python: pandas, scheduled reports, simple forecasts. Statistics: A/B test readouts, regression. Certificates: Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (2024).

Licences and certificates

No official profile we read lists a licence for data analysts in the UK or US. Certificates are optional. Microsoft’s Power BI Data Analyst Associate (exam PL-300) covers preparing, modelling, visualising and analysing data and managing Power BI; Microsoft lists a 12-month renewal frequency and a free online renewal assessment. Prospects names the Royal Statistical Society’s Data Analyst professional status, which needs training plus work-based experience, and advises choosing training that fits your role rather than collecting certificates.

Data protection belongs in a line, not a badge

Both the National Careers Service and the UK government’s DDaT framework treat data protection and ethics as part of the job. If you masked personal fields, set access rules on a dashboard or removed identifiers before sharing a file, write that as one concrete line.

Applying abroad

The country guides cover the residence rules: the EU Blue Card guide for degree recognition and Germany’s salary threshold, the Netherlands highly skilled migrant guide for the IND salary bands and sponsor list, and the UK guide for international applicants for sponsorship and right to work. This page does not repeat them.

Questions people ask

How do I write a data analyst CV with no experience?

Lead with one or two portfolio analyses on open data, each with the question, method, tool and conclusion, then your degree or apprenticeship and any role where you handled numbers.

What SQL skills should I put on my resume?

The dialects you use and the techniques that show depth, such as window functions, CTEs and query tuning, each backed by a line describing a real query and its result.

Should I list both Power BI and Tableau?

Only if you have built something in both. Name the tool inside the line about the dashboard you built so the reader sees where you used it.

How do I show business impact as a data analyst?

Name who used your analysis and what changed: a decision, a cost, time saved or an error removed. Use the closest measured change you actually know.

Do data analysts need a certification?

No licence is required in the profiles we read. A certificate such as Microsoft PL-300 helps when the posting names that tool; experience lines carry more weight.

Should a data analyst CV include a portfolio link?

Yes, if it holds finished analyses with a written conclusion. Prospects suggests open datasets that show your question, cleaning, method and communication.

Is Excel still worth listing on a data analyst CV?

Yes, when the posting mentions it. Prospects lists SQL and Excel as core tools; describe a model or reconciliation rather than writing "advanced Excel".
