Accountant CV example: from trainee to licensed practitioner
An accountant CV leads with your qualification status stated exactly (licensed, in training, or part-qualified), then shows the closes, filings and reconciliations you ran, the ERP you ran them in, and numbers such as entities, invoices or deadlines met.1

Write your qualification status before anything else
Accounting titles are often protected, and a reader checks this line before the rest. In Türkiye, article 3 of Law 3568 forbids anyone without the legal right from using the titles serbest muhasebeci mali müşavir (SMMM) or yeminli mali müşavir, or any title close enough to be confused with them. A trainee who writes “Financial Advisor (SMMM)” on an English CV is making a claim the law reserves for licence holders.
So the first job is to put your status into one plain line that a recruiter in Istanbul, London or Frankfurt can read without guessing.
| Your situation | How to write it in English | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed in Türkiye | Independent Accountant and Financial Advisor (SMMM), licence [year] | “CPA”, which a US reader takes for a state licence |
| In the three-year staj | SMMM trainee (stajyer), year 2 of 3, under a licensed SMMM | “Accountant (SMMM)” or “Financial Advisor” |
| Staj finished, exams under way | SMMM exam: 5 of 8 subjects passed, [month year] | “SMMM candidate” with no detail |
| ACCA in progress | ACCA: 9 of 13 exams passed; Ethics and Professional Skills module completed | “ACCA (part-qualified)” with no count |
| US licence | CPA, licensed in [state] | “CPA eligible” when you have not sat the exam |
There is no single official English name for SMMM. A literal gloss of serbest muhasebeci mali müşavir is safest; whatever you choose, keep the Turkish abbreviation in brackets so a Turkish reader can match it to the title in the law.
How the SMMM route works, step by step
The licence comes at the end of a fixed sequence set by Law 3568 and run by TÜRMOB through its training centre, TESMER. Knowing the sequence tells you what to put on the CV at each stage.
Who may start
Article 5 asks for at least a bachelor’s degree in law, economics, public finance, business, accounting, banking, public administration or political science, or a bachelor’s in another field plus a postgraduate degree in one of those. Foreign degrees count once YÖK has confirmed their equivalence. Article 4 adds the general conditions, starting with Turkish citizenship.
Entry exam and the three-year staj
Article 6 says the staj is done with an independent SMMM or a sworn financial advisor (YMM), or in their firms, and that a trainee must first pass the entry exam and TESMER’s basic training. The 2026 TESMER directive sets the entry exam at 130 questions: 100 on the field, 20 on general knowledge and aptitude, and 10 in English, French or German. A score of 60 opens the staj, and a successful candidate has three years to start it.
The staj lasts three years and must be insured employment. TESMER counts it from the working days reported to the Social Security Institution (SGK), with a month taken as 30 days and a year as 360. Each year the supervising SMMM fills in an evaluation form (tezkiye) out of 100, and the average of those forms counts as one more subject in the final exam.
The SMMM exam
| Exam subject | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Financial accounting (incl. the uniform chart of accounts, TMS and TFRS) | 20 | 45 min |
| Financial statements and analysis | 20 | 45 min |
| Cost accounting | 20 | 45 min |
| Audit (incl. Turkish auditing standards) | 20 | 45 min |
| Tax law and practice | 20 | 45 min |
| Law (commercial, obligations, labour, social security, administrative procedure) | 20 | 45 min |
| Professional law for accountants and financial advisors | 20 | 45 min |
| Capital markets law | 20 | 45 min |
To pass, a candidate needs at least 50 out of 100 in every subject and an average of at least 60, with the best mark in each subject counted. The exams sit three times a year in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, and a candidate has three years from the first sitting. Under article 36, TÜRMOB’s board runs the exams and issues the professional licence.
After the licence
Article 9 sets the next step: a sworn financial advisor (YMM) needs at least 10 years as an SMMM, a separate exam and a YMM licence. The law also distinguishes members who practise independently from those who work attached to one employer, so say which applies to you.
ACCA, CIMA and CPA as international context
If you hold or are working towards a British or American qualification as well, describe it in that body’s own units. Each one measures progress differently, and a reader abroad checks against its rules, not Türkiye’s.
ACCA
ACCA’s structure page lists 13 exams in three groups: three Applied Knowledge exams, six Applied Skills exams, and four at Strategic Professional (two essentials plus two of four options). Members also complete the Ethics and Professional Skills module and at least 36 months of relevant experience with 9 performance objectives, signed off by a practical experience supervisor.
CIMA and other UK bodies
The National Careers Service profile for management accountants names CIMA, ACCA and the Institute of Financial Accountants as professional routes, alongside a Level 7 accountancy and taxation apprenticeship.
US CPA
BLS says CPAs are licensed by each state’s board of accountancy, that every state asks for 150 semester hours of college coursework, about 30 more than a typical bachelor’s, and that any accountant filing reports with the SEC must be a licensed CPA.
Skills and systems the job profiles name
O*NET’s task list for accountants and auditors reads like a checklist of evidence lines: checking records and statements for accuracy, processing invoices, reconciling accounts, preparing tax returns and adjusting entries, and preparing annual reports. Its software list names Intuit QuickBooks, Sage 50, SAP, Oracle PeopleSoft, Microsoft Dynamics and Microsoft Excel.
| Skill | Named by | Evidence line |
|---|---|---|
| Attention to detail | BLS, NCS | Reconciled 14 bank accounts monthly; cleared all differences before the 5th working day |
| Tax knowledge | O*NET | Prepared monthly VAT and withholding returns for 22 client companies |
| Analytical thinking | BLS, NCS | Built a cost-centre report that showed a 9% overspend on logistics |
| Computer systems | NCS, O*NET | Posted entries and ran the month-end close in Logo Tiger and SAP FI |
| Communication | BLS | Explained audit adjustments to two client owners in writing |
For an ERP, name the product, the module and what you did in it. “ERP experience” tells a reader nothing; “month-end close in SAP FI, 3 company codes” tells them what you can take over on day one.
Worked example: an SMMM trainee applying to an in-house role
Example only. Deniz Arslan is invented, and the firm, clients and figures are illustrative. Deniz is in the third year of the staj at a small SMMM office and is applying for a general accounting post at a manufacturer that reports to a German parent.

Notice what the example leaves out. It does not call Deniz an SMMM, does not round the staj up, and does not list ACCA exams that are still to come. Every line has a count or a deadline that a reference check could confirm.

Where this example stops
- Sworn financial advisor (YMM) posts, which need 10 years as an SMMM before the YMM exam.
- Roles at brokerages and portfolio managers that require a capital markets licence; the finance and banking example covers those.
- Pure bookkeeping or data-entry jobs, where a short CV of systems and volumes is enough.
- Academic posts in accounting, which start with publications and teaching.
Next steps and applying abroad
There is no accountant-specific country guide on this site yet. For the UK, the UK CV format guide covers layout and personal details; for Germany, the German CV format guide and the EU Blue Card guide apply to graduate roles. The degree recognition guide shows how to state an official comparison of your degree next to the Turkish original.
CitedCV can write the CV in English, Turkish or German from the facts you enter and follows UK, US, EU, DE or TR conventions for photos and personal details. It does not know TÜRMOB’s rules, so the status line is yours to check.
- Write the status line first, with the Turkish title in brackets.
- Count clients, entities, filings and deadlines from your own records.
- Name each ERP with its module.
- Add ACCA or CPA progress only in the units the body uses.
Questions people ask
How do I write SMMM on an English CV?
Use a literal English gloss with the Turkish abbreviation in brackets, for example “Independent Accountant and Financial Advisor (SMMM), licence 2025”, so both readers can check it.

No. Law 3568 forbids anyone without the legal right from using the SMMM title or one that could be confused with it; write “SMMM trainee (stajyer)”.
How long is the SMMM internship in Turkey?
Three years. The 2026 TESMER directive counts it from SGK-reported working days, with a month as 30 days and a year as 360.

Yes, as a count against ACCA’s 13 exams and by level, for example “Applied Knowledge complete, 4 of 13 passed”, without implying membership.
Which accounting software should I put on my CV?
Put the packages you actually used, by product and module, such as SAP FI or Logo Tiger general ledger, plus Excel functions you rely on.
What is on the SMMM exam?
Eight subjects of 20 questions each: financial accounting, statements and analysis, cost accounting, audit, tax, law, professional law and capital markets law.
What does a US employer need to see on an accountant resume?
A CPA licence and the state that issued it, if you hold one; BLS says reports filed with the SEC must come from a licensed CPA.
