Computer engineering graduate CV: degree, internships and the title

A computer engineering graduate CV leads with the degree and capstone, then internships and lab work that show hardware and software skills. Use the title Computer Engineer only where your degree gives you the right to it.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

First decide which half of the degree you are selling

Computer engineering sits between electrical engineering and computer science, and employers hire graduates for both halves. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes computer hardware engineers as people who design and test processors, circuit boards and memory, and software developers as people who design applications and programs; it notes the two often work together. Your CV cannot argue for both with equal weight on one page, so choose before you write.

  1. Read five postings you would apply to and mark each as hardware-leaning (firmware, embedded, FPGA, chip verification) or software-leaning (applications, backend, data).
  2. Pick the side that wins. Your capstone, internships and courses are then ordered to support it.
  3. Keep one line of evidence for the other side; employers value an engineer who understands both.
  4. If the postings split evenly, write two versions rather than one CV that half fits both.

What employers check in a graduate

BLS says computer hardware engineers typically need a bachelor's degree in computer engineering or a related field such as electrical engineering, and that some employers prefer a master's. Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, advises computing graduates to get placements or a year in industry, and to build a portfolio of programming work, open-source contributions or GitHub profiles. It also says employers want to see that you can fix bugs, collaborate and deploy applications to the cloud.

CheckWhat answers it on the CV
The degree and its standingDegree title exactly as on the diploma, university, graduation month and year; accreditation if the programme has one
Applied work beyond lecturesCapstone or graduation project with your part, tools and a measured result
Time inside a companyInternships with dates, working days, team and what you delivered
Hardware and software rangeOne lab or course project from each side
Code or designs to look atA repository or project page, linked once in the header

Courses earn a line only when they prove something

A list of twelve course names repeats your transcript. Name two or three advanced courses that match the posting, each with what you built in it: a pipelined processor in a hardware description language, an operating-system scheduler, a compiler front end.

The engineering title, country by country

Software developer is an open job title. Engineer is not everywhere. Before you write Computer Engineer under your name, check what the title means where you apply.

CountryRule we readWhat to write on the CV
TürkiyeLaw 3458 ties the engineer title to an engineering diploma (or an equivalence licence for a foreign one); using it without one is punishable. Law 6235, Article 33, requires engineers doing work of the profession to register with the matching TMMOB chamber; permanent public-sector staff may choose.Bilgisayar Mühendisi once you hold the diploma; the chamber for computer engineers is BMO
United KingdomChartered Engineer (CEng) needs an accredited honours bachelor plus an accredited master or further learning, or an accredited MEng, then a competence assessment through a licensed institution; BCS is licensed to award CEng.Your degree; CEng only after it is awarded. A graduate can mention interim registration if granted
United StatesABET accredits computing and engineering programmes. NCEES stopped the PE exam in software engineering after April 2019 for low demand. The degree with ABET accreditation if your programme has it; no PE line is expected for software work
GermanyIngenieur is a protected title under state law; the Germany engineer guide covers it.Follow that guide before translating your title

A foreign degree and the title

If your degree is from another country, the title question usually becomes a recognition question. In Türkiye, Law 3458 accepts a foreign engineering diploma only through an equivalence licence. The degree recognition guide shows how to write a recognised or pending degree on a CV.

Internships: write the days, not just the company

Many engineering programmes make internships compulsory and count them in working days. At İstanbul Medeniyet University's computer engineering department, for example, the rule is 40 working days in total: 20 after the fourth semester and 20 after the sixth, or 40 at once after the sixth. The workplace must have a computer engineer on staff (or, failing that, a software, computer science, systems or electronics engineer), internships shorter than 20 working days are not accepted, and placements at hardware or software sales firms do not count.

  • Heading per internship: role, company, city, month and year, and the working days (for example, 20 working days, compulsory).
  • Two lines at most: what you built or tested, and how you knew it worked.
  • Name the engineer or team you worked under only if a reference is available.
  • Do not inflate a compulsory internship into a job title such as Junior Engineer.

Example: a graduate CV from header to skills

Example only. Ece Yıldız is invented, and so are the companies and figures. She is applying to embedded-software roles, so hardware evidence comes first.

Header and profile

  • Ece Yıldız, Computer Engineering graduate (BSc, June 2026), İzmir. Email, phone, github.com/eceyildiz-example.
  • Profile: Embedded and firmware focus. Built a battery-powered sensor network as a capstone; two internships, one in firmware and one in backend software.

Education and capstone

  • BSc Computer Engineering, a state university in İzmir, September 2022 to June 2026.
  • Capstone: a soil-moisture sensor network on STM32 microcontrollers with LoRa radio and a Python dashboard; team of four, my part the firmware and the power budget; 41 days on one battery set in a field test.
  • Computer Architecture course: a five-stage pipelined RISC-V processor in Verilog that passed the course test bench.

Internships

  • Firmware intern, an industrial electronics company, July to August 2024, 20 working days (compulsory): wrote and tested a C driver for an I2C temperature sensor on three board revisions.
  • Software intern, a logistics software company, July to August 2025, 20 working days (compulsory): added pagination to an internal Java REST endpoint; the slowest admin page went from 9 s to 1.4 s.

Every entry above answers a check from the employer table: degree and date, applied work with her share, time in a company counted in days, and evidence from both the hardware and software halves.

When another guide fits better

  • You have several years of industry work: the software developer guide moves from junior to senior lines.
  • You studied abroad and need recognition before using the title: the degree recognition guide.
  • You want a student internship CV rather than a graduate one: the internship resume guide.
  • You apply for engineering jobs in Germany or the Netherlands: the two country engineer guides.

Next steps

  1. Choose hardware or software as the lead side from five real postings.
  2. Rewrite the capstone as one line with your part, the tools and a number.
  3. Add working days and dates to each internship.
  4. Check the title rule for the country before you write Engineer.

CitedCV can build the CV from the degree, internship and project facts you enter, in English, Turkish or German; it writes from those facts only, so the title it uses is the one you give it.

Questions people ask

Can I call myself a computer engineer without a degree?

Not in Türkiye, where Law 3458 ties the title to an engineering diploma and penalises unlawful use. Elsewhere, check the local rule; Germany protects Ingenieur too.

Is computer engineering the same as software engineering on a CV?

No. Write the degree name exactly as on your diploma. In Türkiye both degree names appear on the BMO membership list, but they are different programmes.

How do I write a compulsory internship on a computer engineer CV?

Give the role, company, dates and working days, mark it compulsory, and add one or two lines on what you built and how you checked it.

Do computer engineers need a PE license in the US?

Not for software work in general. NCEES discontinued its PE exam in software engineering after April 2019 because of low demand.

Can a new graduate be a Chartered Engineer in the UK?

Not straight away. CEng needs accredited education and an assessed record of competence through a licensed institution such as BCS.

What projects should a computer engineering graduate put on a CV?

The capstone first, then one hardware and one software project with your part, the tools used and a measured result.

Should a computer engineering graduate join BMO?

Graduates from BMO's listed departments can join, and students join free. Under Law 6235, engineers doing professional work must register, except permanent public-sector staff.
