Industrial engineer CV example with improvement projects, belts and ERP

Write each improvement project as a measured before and after, name the organisation that issued any Lean or Six Sigma belt, and list only the ERP and analysis tools you used on real work.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

Start with your three strongest improvement projects

Before touching the layout, pick the three pieces of work that changed a number someone in management cared about: output per shift, scrap, changeover time, stock, overtime, lead time. An industrial engineering CV is read as a record of those changes. Duties without a result read like a job description.

  1. Write the baseline and where it came from: the line, the cell, the warehouse zone, the month.
  2. Write the method you used: time study, value stream map, SMED, layout change, simulation, a designed experiment, a new planning rule in the ERP.
  3. Write the result and the period you measured it over, for example "over the following 12 weeks".
  4. Write your share: did you lead the project, run the analysis, or support a team led by someone else?
  5. Keep one sentence of context a recruiter outside your plant would understand, such as the product or the number of lines.

If a project has no measured result yet, say what was delivered (a new standard work sheet for 14 stations, a simulation model used in a capacity decision) rather than inventing a saving.

What operations and manufacturing managers look for

O*NET's profile for industrial engineers (17-2112.00) starts its task list with estimating production costs and cost-saving methods, planning and sequencing operations, and analysing statistical data and product specifications to set quality and reliability objectives. Those three tasks are a good test for your bullet points: each line should touch cost, flow or quality.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the job as designing and improving systems that combine workers, machines, materials, information and energy, and names human factors engineers, manufacturing engineers and validation engineers among its specialties. That list is useful when you read job ads, because the same skill set is advertised under several titles.

The UK name for the job

The National Careers Service has no profile called industrial engineer. Its closest, manufacturing systems engineer, covers designing and installing production lines, testing systems and analysing data to improve production, and building models with CAD and CAM software. If you apply in the UK, mirror the title the advert uses and keep 'industrial engineering' for your degree line.

Lean and Six Sigma belts: who issues what

There is no single official Six Sigma or Lean authority. A belt is only as clear as the organisation behind it, so the issuer belongs on the CV line. These are the requirements as each body states them on its own page.

CredentialIssuerWhat the issuer requires
Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB)ASQThree years of full-time, paid work in one or more areas of the Green Belt body of knowledge; one open-book exam (110 questions on computer, 100 scored)
Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)ASQThree years of experience plus one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits; open-book exam
Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (IASSC-CGB)IASSCNo prerequisites and no project required; a 100-question, closed-book, proctored exam with three hours allotted
Lean Certification: Bronze, Silver, GoldLean Certification Alliance (AME, Shingo Institute, SME)Training, an exam, real projects and a written presentation peer-reviewed by lean practitioners; 60 recertification credits every three years

Company programmes and training-provider certificates

Many belts come from an employer programme or a training company. They can be worth listing, but say so plainly: "Green Belt, internal programme, Acme Components, 2024, one project completed". A reader who knows the difference between an exam-based ASQ credential and a two-day course will trust the rest of the CV more.

One line per credential

  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), ASQ, 2025
  • Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, IASSC, 2023
  • Lean Certification, Bronze, Lean Certification Alliance (SME), 2024
  • Yellow Belt, in-house training, ABC Plastics, 2022 (if you list it at all)

Example: an industrial engineer CV section

Example. Maya Chen is an invented person and every figure below is illustrative. Use the shape, not the numbers.

Profile

Industrial engineer with four years in automotive component plants. Runs line balancing, changeover and capacity studies, and keeps routing and work-centre data in SAP accurate. ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt.

Process Improvement Engineer, Northgate Components, Ohio, 2023 to present

  • Led SMED workshops on two injection-moulding presses; average changeover fell from 48 to 22 minutes over the following 10 weeks.
  • Rebalanced a 14-station assembly line after a takt time change, removing one station and moving two operators to a new line without overtime.
  • Built a discrete-event simulation of the finished-goods dock; the model was used to choose a two-shift loading plan over a third dock door.
  • Cleaned routing and work-centre data for 1,900 SAP materials, so planned hours matched clocked hours within 5% on the main cell.

Graduate Industrial Engineer, Lakeside Packaging, 2021 to 2023

  • Time studies on 22 packing operations used to set new standard times for the plant cost model.
  • Green Belt project: cut label rework on line 3 from 3.1% to 1.2% of cases, using a measurement system check and a two-factor experiment in Minitab.

Certifications and tools

Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), ASQ, 2024. SAP (PP, MM), Minitab, Excel with Power Query, AutoCAD for layouts, discrete-event simulation.

Skills table: tool, where it shows, what proves it

O*NET's technology list for the occupation names SAP under ERP, Minitab and MATLAB under analytical software, R, and workcell simulation software. List what you used, and let the experience lines prove it.

Licences, sources and dates

Read on 13 October 2026. The BLS page for industrial engineers says licensure is not required for entry-level positions. Experienced engineers may obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) licence, which generally needs an engineering degree, a pass in the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, several years of relevant work and a pass in the PE exam; each state issues its own licence. BLS also notes that certification is not required.

UK and Germany in one line each

  • UK: the National Careers Service says manufacturing systems engineers can work towards incorporated or chartered engineer status with the professional body for their branch.
  • Germany: the word Ingenieur is a protected title; the Germany engineer guide explains when you may write it.

Certification rules change. Check the issuer page linked below before you apply for an exam or quote its requirements in an interview.

Where this page stops

This page is for people whose work is measured in throughput, cost and quality on a shop floor, in a warehouse or in a service operation. If most of your time goes to transport planning, customs and Incoterms, the logistics guide fits better. If you run budgets and teams across projects, read the project manager guide. Product and machine design work is covered in the mechanical engineer guide.

Applying abroad and what to do next

For Germany, the engineer guide covers the protected title and how German readers expect project lines. For other countries, keep this structure and adjust the conventions, such as photo and personal details, to the country guide.

To turn your project notes into a CV, CitedCV builds one in English, Turkish or German from the facts you enter, and asks for the missing figure instead of filling it in. Then tailor the first three bullets to each advert.

Questions people ask

Should I put a company Six Sigma Green Belt on my resume?

Yes, if it included a real project, but name it as an internal programme with the company and year so nobody mistakes it for an ASQ or IASSC exam.

What is the difference between an ASQ and an IASSC Green Belt?

ASQ asks for three years of relevant paid experience before its open-book exam, while IASSC has no prerequisites and uses a closed-book proctored exam, according to each body.

Do industrial engineers need a PE license?

No, not to start. BLS says licensure is not required at entry level; experienced engineers may take the FE and PE exams to sign off on projects.

Which ERP skills should an industrial engineer list?

List the system and the data you owned, such as SAP routings, BOMs or MRP settings, and back it with one bullet showing the result.

How do I show cost savings on an industrial engineering resume?

Give the baseline, the change and the measurement period, and say whether finance confirmed the figure; if it was never measured, describe the delivered output instead.

Is an industrial engineer the same as a manufacturing engineer?

They overlap: BLS lists manufacturing engineers as one specialty of industrial engineering, so match the title each employer uses in its advert.

What should a new graduate industrial engineer put on a CV?

Put the capstone or internship project first, written like work: the baseline, your method, and the number it changed, followed by tools you used on it.
