Nurse CV for Germany: recognition and the CV the authority reads

To work as a nurse in Germany you need state recognition; the application includes a tabular CV in German listing training and jobs. Gaps against German training lead to a deficit notice, then a knowledge test or adaptation course.1

What to do first

Choose the federal state where you want to work, then look up its authority in the Recognition Finder on anerkennung-in-deutschland.de. The state is not a detail: Hessen's information sheet says that if you already have a job in another state, you must apply there instead. Next, ask your nursing faculty in Türkiye for one document that lists every subject with its hours and every clinical placement with its department and hours. Hessen asks for exactly that breakdown, and it is the paper that takes longest to obtain from abroad.

Fees, forms and language rules change. Check the linked authority page before you send anything.

How recognition works for a nurse trained in Türkiye

Section 1 of the Nursing Professions Act (Pflegeberufegesetz, PflBG) says anyone who wants to use the title Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann needs a permit. Section 2 grants it for completed training, reliability, health and the German needed for the job. Section 40 accepts training from outside the EU when it shows no substantial differences from the German training.

The procedure, step by step

  1. Apply to the authority of your chosen state. The Recognition Finder says you may apply before you live in Germany, and Berlin takes applications online.
  2. The authority confirms receipt within one month and names missing papers. The procedure regulation (PflAPrV, section 43) sets a decision within four months of complete documents, and asks for two months under the fast-track procedure for skilled workers (section 81a of the Residence Act).
  3. If your training is equivalent and the other conditions are met, you receive the permit to use the title.
  4. If it is not, you receive a formal notice that names the subject areas with substantial differences and explains why your work experience did not make up for them (PflAPrV, section 43(4)). The Hessen information sheet calls it a Defizitbescheid.
  5. You complete a compensation measure, send the certificate to the authority, and receive the permit once language, health and reliability are proven.

Documents the regulation lists

  • A tabular overview of your training and employment, in German (PflAPrV, section 43a(1)). This is the CV.
  • Proof of identity, your diploma and the training documents behind it.
  • Proof of work experience, if you have it.
  • A declaration that you have not applied for recognition elsewhere, and a German certificate if you already hold one.
  • Berlin's Finder entry adds certificates of good conduct from Germany and your country of origin and medical certificates, each no more than three months old when you apply.
  • Translations by a publicly appointed or sworn translator. The authority may accept English instead (section 43a(2) and (3)), and the Finder says to ask whether translations made abroad are accepted.

Skipping the paper comparison

Section 40(3a) PflBG lets you give up the equivalence review for good and prove your knowledge directly. Berlin's entry says that if you take the knowledge test this way, no expert report on your training is prepared. You save the wait for a curriculum comparison, but a test or course becomes certain.

Kenntnisprüfung or Anpassungslehrgang

Section 40(3) PflBG gives you the choice between a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) covering the state final exam and an adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang) of at most three years ending in an exam. The authority cannot pick for you.

KenntnisprüfungAnpassungslehrgang
What it isA state exam with an oral and a practical part (PflAPrV, section 45)Teaching and supervised practice, ending in a final interview (section 44)

Second chancesThe oral part and each failed care situation can be retaken onceOne extension, then one repeat of the course

The German level

The Recognition Finder gives B2 for Berlin, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia also accept a nursing specialist language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) as proof; in North Rhine-Westphalia the Pflegekammer NRW runs it. Hessen says its list of accepted certificates still applies after you pass a compensation measure.

Why your federal state changes the details

The law is federal, but each state runs its own authority, fees and language checks. Four examples, read on 12 October 2026:

StateAuthorityRecognition fee (Finder)Language detail
BerlinLandesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales, Landesprüfungsamt für Gesundheitsberufe€25 to €430B2
BavariaBayerisches Landesamt für Pflege, Amberg€40 to €70, plus €40 for the certificateB2, or the nursing specialist language exam
North Rhine-WestphaliaBezirksregierung Münster (ZAG-PuG) assesses; your local Bezirksregierung then issues the permitAt most €277.50B2, or the specialist exam at the Pflegekammer NRW
HessenHessisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Pflege, Dezernat IV 3Not listed in the sheet we readA certificate from its accepted list

The Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia entries were last updated on 9 June 2026, the Bavarian one on 14 February 2024, and the Hessen sheet is dated 22 August 2023.

The clinical experience block

The authority compares your placements with Annex 7 of the PflAPrV, which splits the 2,500 hours of German practical training into care areas. Hessen asks your faculty's document to show the facilities, specialties or departments and the hours in each. And the practical part of the knowledge test is set in one of those Annex 7 areas. So write your clinical history the way they count it: one line per placement, named by the German care area, with hours.

German training also has 2,100 hours of theory and practical lessons (PflAPrV, section 1). Do not convert or round your hours to look closer to these figures; write what your faculty certifies.

Sample block, as it goes on the German CV

  • Studium: 09/2015 bis 06/2019 Bachelor Krankenpflege (Hemşirelik Lisans), Universität Beispielstadt, Türkei. Theorie 2.300 Std., Praxis 1.150 Std. laut Fächer- und Stundenbescheinigung.
  • Praxiseinsätze: Innere Medizin 240 Std., Chirurgie 240 Std., Pädiatrie 160 Std., Psychiatrie 120 Std., Gemeindepflege 120 Std.
  • Berufserfahrung: 08/2019 bis heute Hemşire (Pflegekraft, Türkei), Internistische Intensivstation, 12 Betten, Staatliches Krankenhaus Beispielstadt. Vollzeit, Schichtdienst mit Nachtdienst.
  • Aufgaben: Medikamentengabe nach ärztlicher Anordnung, Pflegeplanung und Dokumentation, Überwachung beatmeter Patientinnen und Patienten.
  • Anerkennung: Antrag auf Erlaubnis zum Führen der Berufsbezeichnung gestellt 03/2026, Landesamt Beispielland; Bescheid mit Ausgleichsmaßnahme 08/2026; Kenntnisprüfung geplant 01/2027.
  • Deutsch: B2, Zertifikat und Prüfungsanbieter, 05/2026.

Every name and number above is a placeholder. Copy hours from the faculty document, because the authority checks the CV against it. Note the job title: section 1 PflBG ties the title Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann to the permit, so before recognition write your Turkish title with a plain German gloss.

How a hospital reads the same block

The recognition line tells an employer whether you can start as a nurse or must pass a measure first. Section 16d of the Residence Act lets you stay for a compensation measure and, in a recognition partnership with an employer, work while recognition runs; that route needs at least A2 German under section 2(10). The visa itself is covered on the national visa page.

Who this page is not for

  • People who want to start nursing training in Germany from scratch. The nursing Ausbildung page covers that route.
  • Nurses trained in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, who often get automatic recognition under a separate procedure.
  • Doctors. Medicine has its own licence, exams and CV; see the doctor page.
  • Readers looking for visa paperwork. This page covers recognition and the CV only.

Next steps

  • Run the Recognition Finder for your state and save its entry as a PDF; it names the authority, fees and online form.
  • If a recruiter contacts you, the Finder points to the quality seal Fair Recruitment Healthcare Germany as a sign of a fair, transparent process.
  • For the order of documents in a job application, see the German application documents page; for the layout of a Lebenslauf, see the German CV format page.
  • CitedCV can write this CV in German with German conventions, using only the facts you enter, such as your placements and hours.

Questions people ask

What documents do I need for nursing recognition in Germany?

A tabular CV in German, ID, your diploma and training documents with subjects and placement hours, proof of work experience, good-conduct and medical certificates, a German certificate, and sworn translations.

Do I need B2 German to work as a nurse in Germany?

Yes, in the states we checked. The Recognition Finder gives B2 for Berlin, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, and two of them also accept a nursing specialist language exam.

What is a Defizitbescheid?

It is the formal notice that lists where your training differs substantially from German training. It opens the choice between a knowledge test and an adaptation course.

Should I choose the Kenntnisprüfung or the Anpassungslehrgang?

Either one leads to the same permit; the law lets you choose. The test is shorter and has fixed dates, while the course gives supervised practice of up to three years.

How long does nurse recognition take in Germany?

Up to four months after your file is complete, or two months under the fast-track procedure. A compensation measure adds its own time, and the test must be offered within six months of the notice.

Can I apply for recognition while I am still in Türkiye?

Yes. The Recognition Finder says you may apply before living in Germany, and some states such as Berlin take online applications.

Can I write Pflegefachfrau on my CV before recognition?

No. The PflBG ties that title to the permit, so write your Turkish title, for example Hemşire, with a short German description until you hold it.

Can I work in Germany while recognition is in progress?

Sometimes. Section 16d of the Residence Act allows a stay for compensation measures and a recognition partnership with an employer, which requires at least A2 German.
