Psychologist CV example: protected titles, supervised practice and assessment tools

Lead a psychologist CV with the protected title and registration you hold, then supervised practice by setting, then the assessments you are trained to give. HCPC protects clinical psychologist in the UK; most US states license the title.1

Check which word you may put after your name

Psychology is one of the few fields where the job title itself can be a legal claim. HCPC's list for practitioner psychologists protects nine titles: practitioner psychologist, registered psychologist, clinical, forensic, counselling, health, educational, occupational, and sport and exercise psychologist. The plain word psychologist is not on that list.

In the US the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that in most states, practising psychology or using the title psychologist requires a licence, and that clinical and counseling psychologists are licensed in every state. In Türkiye, Law 1219 defines the clinical psychologist (klinik psikolog) as a health professional and sets the education the title needs.

A heading that survives a background check

Write the exact registered title, the register and the number: Clinical psychologist, HCPC registered, number [number]. Before registration, use the stage you are at, such as trainee clinical psychologist or psychology graduate, and leave the protected word out.

Getting into UK clinical training

The National Careers Service adds that entry to the clinical doctorate asks for a first or 2:1 degree, evidence of research skills and work experience. Industrial-organisational psychologists are the exception in the US: the BLS says they typically need a master's degree.

Supervised practice: count it the way your programme counts it

No single international unit exists for supervised hours. The BLS describes supervised experience as a licensing step in most states. Turkish law requires the clinical master's to include practical work in clinical settings but sets no hour total, so each university writes its own rules. Istanbul Gedik University's directive, for example, requires at least two clients per student, no more than three at a time, sessions of 40 to 50 minutes, and an end-of-term case formulation report.

  1. Use the unit your programme or licensing board uses: client contact hours, cases or sessions. Do not convert one into another.
  2. Split by setting: inpatient, outpatient, school, forensic, community.
  3. Name the supervision format (individual or group) and the supervisor’s title, not a private client’s details.
  4. Add the modality you were supervised in, such as CBT or schema therapy, only if the supervision covered it.
  5. Keep a signed log; a recruiter or board may ask for it, and the CV should match it line for line.

Sample CV section: early-career clinical psychologist (example)

Example only. The person, services and numbers are invented to show the form; use your own facts.

  • Dr Amira Haddad, Clinical Psychologist. HCPC registered, number [number]. Manchester. Email and phone.
  • Profile: Clinical psychologist in adult mental health, two years qualified, delivering CBT and running assessment clinics for a community team.
  • Clinical Psychologist, Adult Community Mental Health Team, 2024 to present: caseload of 16 to 18 adults; group programme for anxiety, 8 sessions, run twice a year; supervise one assistant psychologist weekly.
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, 2021 to 2024: placements in adult, child and family, older adult and learning disability services; thesis on sleep and mood in shift workers.
  • Assessment: WAIS-IV and WMS-IV administration, scoring and report writing; ADOS-2 trained (2023); routine outcome measures PHQ-9 and GAD-7 at every review.
  • Supervision received: weekly individual supervision throughout training; monthly CBT supervision since qualifying.

What the example gets right

Caseload and group numbers show volume without naming anyone. Each placement is a setting, which is how training programmes and employers think about breadth. Tests appear with the verbs administer, score and report, so the reader knows the depth of training rather than seeing a bare list of acronyms.

Assessment tools: list them with your level of training

DomainExamples people listHow to phrase it
Intelligence and cognitionWAIS, WISCAdministered and scored; number of reports written
PersonalityMMPI, structured clinical interviewsTrained on; used in which service
NeuropsychologyMemory and executive function batteriesUnder supervision or independently
Development and autismDevelopmental scales, ADOS-2Course name and year of training
Outcome monitoringPHQ-9, GAD-7, CORE-10Used at assessment and review

Train first, then list

Turkey's 2014 duties regulation says clinical psychologists apply intelligence, personality, developmental and neuropsychological tests provided they have been trained in them. That condition is good practice anywhere: list only tests you completed training for.

Skills that official profiles name

  • Counselling skills, including active listening and a non-judgemental approach (National Careers Service).
  • Analytical thinking and sensitivity: show it with a formulation or an audit you led.
  • Verbal and written communication: reports, letters to referrers, teaching sessions.
  • Staying calm under pressure: risk assessments, crisis work, duty rota.
  • Research: the clinical doctorate asks for evidence of research skills, so name your thesis and any publication.

Proof: sources and dates

All sources were read on 13 October 2026. The National Careers Service profile gives £49,000 for a starter clinical psychologist and £65,000 with experience. The BLS gives a median wage of $100,580 for clinical and counseling psychologists in May 2025. The Turkish rules come from Law 1219, additional article 13, and the 2014 duties regulation on mevzuat.gov.tr. Licensing rules change; read the linked page for the place you are applying to before you send the CV.

Who should use a different layout

  • Research and teaching posts: an academic CV with publications, grants and teaching comes first; see the CV vs resume guide.
  • Industrial-organisational and HR psychology roles: lead with projects, assessments built and business results.
  • School counsellors and guidance teachers: the teacher CV guide fits better.

Applying abroad

There is no country guide for psychologists on this site yet. If your degree is from another country, the guide on degree recognition shows how to write the recognition decision, and the CEFR guide covers language levels, which matter for any therapy role.

CitedCV can write the CV in English, Turkish or German from the facts you give it, such as your placements, caseloads and tests. It does not know any register’s rules, so the title you claim stays your decision.

Questions people ask

Can I call myself a psychologist with a bachelor’s degree?

It depends on the country. In most US states the title needs a licence; in the UK the protected forms need HCPC registration; Turkish law defines only the clinical psychologist title by degree.

How do I list supervised hours on a CV?

Use the unit your programme or board uses, split by setting, and name the supervision format; never convert sessions into hours.

What tests should a psychologist list on a CV?

Only tests you completed training in, each with the verb that matches your level: administered, scored, interpreted or reported.

Does a clinical psychologist CV need publications?

Include your thesis and any publications, because the National Careers Service says clinical training asks for evidence of research skills.

What goes on an assistant psychologist CV?

Settings, the tasks you did under supervision, groups you co-ran, assessments you scored, and the qualified psychologist who supervised you.

Should I put clients or cases on my CV?

No identifiable details ever. Give numbers, age groups, settings and presenting problems at a level that could not point to one person.

Do psychologists need a licence in the US?

Yes for clinical and counseling psychologists, who are licensed in every state according to the BLS; licensure needs supervised experience and often an exam.
