CV for Canada Express Entry: one work history across profile, letters and resume

Express Entry's document list does not name a CV. IRCC checks your profile's work history against the documents you upload, so any resume should match them: same employers, titles, months and hours, with duties fitting one NOC 2021 code.1

Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides

Start with a ten-year master table, not a resume

IRCC's help centre says that to qualify for the widest range of programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, an Express Entry profile should list work experience for the last 10 years, and that the permanent residence application needs the same information whatever the program. So the first document to build is a private table that every later form, letter and resume copies from.

  1. List every job of the last ten years, newest first, with the employer name exactly as it appears on letters and payslips.
  2. Give each job a start and end month, and the hours you were paid for in a normal week.
  3. Mark whether the job was paid by wages or commission, and whether you were a full-time student at the time.
  4. Find the NOC 2021 code whose lead statement and main duties describe what you actually did, and note its TEER digit.
  5. Write down which document proves each line: a reference letter, contract, payslips or tax papers.
  6. Only then write the resume, and copy titles, months and hours from the table rather than from memory.

How IRCC reads your work experience

Skilled means TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3

The Federal Skilled Worker page, modified on 24 September 2026, says the qualifying experience must be in TEER category 0, 1, 2 or 3, gained in the last 10 years in Canada or abroad, paid, and in the same NOC as the primary occupation you claim. Volunteer work and unpaid internships do not count.

One year means 1,560 hours, counted at 30 a week

IRCC counts one year as 1,560 hours, which is 30 hours a week. Hours above 30 a week are not counted, so a 45-hour week is worth 30 on paper. Part-time work can add up to the same total: at 20 hours a week it takes 78 weeks to reach 1,560 hours, and at 15 hours a week 104 weeks.

Continuous for the program, not for the points

The Comprehensive Ranking System awards points for skilled experience that need not be continuous, the help centre explains, but the Federal Skilled Worker Program itself needs at least one year of continuous full-time paid work. A month missing from your table can matter for one and not the other.

Your primary occupation may not be your latest job

IRCC says this in so many words. If your strongest year in one NOC was five years ago, that job carries the claim, and the resume should not bury it under the latest role.

Work done while studying

Paid, continuous work done while studying, including co-op terms and apprenticeships, can count toward the Federal Skilled Worker minimum. It does not count toward the minimum for the Canadian Experience Class, whose page excludes co-op terms by name, and Canadian work done as a full-time student earns no ranking points. Work done as a full-time student outside Canada does count toward the score.

Why a mismatch is more than untidy

After an invitation you have 60 days to apply, and IRCC says you must upload copies of the documents you used for your profile; it uses them to check that you meet the program's requirements and may refuse or reject the application without them. Section 40 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act makes a person inadmissible for misrepresenting or withholding material facts, for five years. A date that differs between your resume and a letter is usually a slip, but it is the kind an officer asks about.

Reading TEER from a NOC 2021 code

NOC 2021 Version 1.0 uses five-digit codes. Statistics Canada's introduction to the classification says the first digit is the broad occupational category and the second digit is the TEER category. IRCC's find-your-NOC page asks applicants to use this version and to check that the main duties match what they did.

The NOC site, read on 13 October 2026, notes that research for a NOC 2026 Version 1.0 is complete and Statistics Canada has published a report on the revision. IRCC's page still names NOC 2021 Version 1.0, so check which version it asks for on the day you build your profile.

Worked example: one job from NOC profile to letter to resume line

The applicant is invented: Emre Yılmaz, a transportation logistics coordinator at a freight forwarder in Mersin since March 2019, paid for 45 hours a week. NOC 13201 covers his work. Its lead statement says transportation logistics coordinators coordinate and monitor the movement of products and ensure they are shipped and received on schedule.

Emre's earlier job as a customer service agent at a shipping agency is listed too, with its own months, but he does not claim it as skilled experience. His military service, 2018 to early 2019, appears as its own line so no period is unexplained.

Reference letters in IRCC's own words

IRCC's public pages, read on 13 October 2026, describe the letter in fewer words than many guides suggest. These are the phrases they use.

IRCC page and date modifiedIts wording
Express Entry: documents (2026-10-02)Proof of work experience, 'such as a reference or experience letter from an employer'
Supporting documents (2026-04-23)'Reference letters from employers (with your job duties, dates you worked there, and salary)'; also contracts, pay stubs and tax documents
Federal Skilled Worker eligibility (2026-09-24)Experience must show you performed the actions in the NOC lead statement and most of the main duties
Supporting documents (2026-04-23)If you cannot get a document, write a letter explaining why, or why it is taking longer

What the Express Entry pages do not list

We found no public Express Entry page that day listing letterhead, a signature or weekly hours as required elements. IRCC's page for the Rural Community Immigration Pilot, a different program, does ask for dates, main duties, the NOC code if known, salary and benefits, hours per week and the employer's name, signature and contact details. Since the Express Entry tests depend on hours, a letter that states hours per week saves a question. The checklist your account generates is the list that binds you.

A belief without a source

Consultant sites often call a letter that copies NOC duties word for word a red flag. None of the IRCC pages read for this guide says so. What they do say is that your duties must match the lead statement and most main duties, which is easier to show in the employer's own description of your work.

Limits of this page

  • It does not calculate CRS points or decide eligibility; use IRCC’s own tools for that.
  • Education credentials need an Educational Credential Assessment; the degree recognition guide covers how to write the result.
  • The personal history in Schedule A and the routes that ask for a CV are covered in the visa application CV guide.
  • Language tests and proof of funds are outside this page.
  • Express Entry rules change; read the linked IRCC pages again before you submit.

Next steps: the employer-facing resume

While you are in the pool, IRCC's help centre suggests a Job Match account on Job Bank, which needs your Express Entry profile number and job seeker validation code, and private job boards. The resume you send employers follows the Canadian resume guide; it can be shorter than your master table, but every date in it should come from that table.

CitedCV ties each resume line to the facts you entered and checks numbers and names against them, which helps keep one set of months and titles across versions. It does not check your file against IRCC rules.

Questions people ask

Do I need a CV for Express Entry?

No document called a CV appears on IRCC's Express Entry document list. You need proof of work experience, such as reference letters, and a resume only for employers or other routes that ask for one.

What should an Express Entry reference letter include?

IRCC's supporting documents page names job duties, the dates you worked there and salary. The duties should show the NOC lead statement and most main duties; stating weekly hours helps because hours decide what counts.

How do I find my NOC code for Express Entry?

Use IRCC's find-your-NOC table or the NOC 2021 Version 1.0 site, search by job title, and pick the code whose main duties match what you did, not the closest title.

Does part-time work count for Express Entry?

Yes, if it adds up to 1,560 hours. At 20 hours a week that takes 78 weeks; hours above 30 a week are never counted.

Can co-op work count toward Express Entry?

For the Federal Skilled Worker minimum, yes, if it was paid and continuous. The Canadian Experience Class excludes co-op terms, and Canadian work as a full-time student earns no ranking points.

What if my employer will not write a reference letter?

Send other proof such as contracts, pay stubs or tax documents, and a letter explaining why you cannot get the document, which IRCC's supporting documents page allows.

Does my job title have to match the NOC title?

No. IRCC asks you to match the duties; if the duties under your title do not fit, look for another title whose duties do.

What happens if my CV and Express Entry profile do not match?

An officer can ask about it, and false or withheld material facts can lead to a five-year inadmissibility under section 40 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
