Doctor CV example: from intern year to specialty training
A doctor CV opens with your registration, then lists specialty training with its expected end date, the intern year by rotation, logged procedures and on-call duties, and finally audits, publications and teaching, newest first.1

Put the registration line above everything else
Before any job history, write one line a reader can verify: where you are registered and under what title. In Türkiye that starts with diploma registration (tescil) by the Ministry of Health; ÖSYM’s 2026 TUS guide makes it a condition for sitting the exam, checked as of the exam date. In the UK, the National Careers Service says a hospital doctor must register with the General Medical Council. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says every state requires a licence and the requirements vary by state.
What that line looks like in each system
- Türkiye: “Medical diploma registered with the Ministry of Health, 2022”, plus the medical chamber if you are a member.
- United Kingdom: your GMC number once issued, or the stage you have reached in the registration process.
- United States: the state, the licence type and its expiry, or “not yet licensed in the US” when you apply for residency.
Chamber membership is a fact to state only when it is true. Article 7 of Law 6023 obliges doctors in private practice to join the local tabip odası within a month; doctors in permanent public posts may join if they wish.
The training stages a medical CV has to show
Medical readers scan for the stage you have reached and when the next one ends. The three systems below give the stages different names, so an English CV for a Turkish-trained doctor needs a short gloss for each.
| Stage | Türkiye | United Kingdom | United States |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final clinical year | Intern year (Dönem VI): 12 continuous months of supervised work after Year 5 | Inside the 5-year medical degree | Inside the 4-year MD or DO degree |
| First posts | General practitioner posts, often during state service duty | A 2-year foundation course of general training | Residency starts straight after the degree |
| Specialty training | Entry by TUS; 3 to 5 years depending on the branch | Specialist training of 5 to 8 years | Residency of 3 to 9 years, then a 1 to 3 year fellowship for subspecialties |
| Right to practise | Diploma registration with the Ministry of Health | GMC registration | A state licence after national exams |

TUS in four facts
- Two tests of 100 multiple-choice questions, basic medical sciences in the morning and clinical sciences in the afternoon, 135 minutes each.
- Clinical branches select on the K score, which weights the basic test 0.4 and the clinical test 0.6; basic-science branches use the T score, weighted the other way round.
- Candidates scoring 45 or more submit preferences. Placement also needs at least 50 out of 100 in YDS, or an accepted equivalent, in English, French or German, valid for five years.
- A result counts only for its own exam period, and the score is cut by 5% for anyone sitting while still in a specialty programme.
Writing TUS on an English CV
Spell the exam out once, for example “Medical Specialty Education Entrance Exam (TUS), August 2026, placed in internal medicine”. The placement and branch are what a reader abroad can use; add the K score when a Turkish employer asks for it.
Giving an expected completion date
Table 7 of the TUS guide lists the length of training in each branch. Add it to your start month and you have an expected completion date, which tells a recruiter when you become a specialist.
| Branch | Training length (years) |
|---|---|
| Family medicine | 3 |
| Emergency medicine | 4 |
| Internal medicine | 4 |
| Paediatrics | 4 |
| Obstetrics and gynaecology | 4 |
| General surgery | 5 |
| Cardiology | 5 |
| Anaesthesiology and reanimation | 5 |
| Radiology | 5 |
What a consultant reading your CV looks for
The NCS profile lists medical knowledge, judgement and decision-making, attention to detail, verbal communication, and staying calm under stress, and adds enhanced background checks. The BLS handbook names communication, compassion, attention to detail, dexterity, leadership, organisation, patience, physical stamina and problem-solving. A CV cannot claim these traits; it can show them in lines like the ones below.
| Skill | Named by | A line that shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Decision-making under pressure | NCS | Covered night on-call for a 32-bed medical ward, escalating to the senior resident by protocol |
| Dexterity | BLS | Placed 40 ultrasound-guided central lines, each logged and signed off |
| Explaining diagnoses to families | NCS | Ran weekly family meetings for long-stay stroke patients |
| Supervising junior staff | NCS | Taught the handover format to 12 interns over one academic year |
| Organisation | BLS | Drew up the on-call rota for 18 residents for six months |
| Problem-solving | BLS | Audited time to first antibiotic in sepsis, changed triage, then re-audited |
Every number in that column belongs to the invented example below. Take yours from your logbook or e-portfolio and leave out any count you could not produce on request.
Worked example: a third-year internal medicine resident

Where this layout does not fit
- Application forms: many training posts are filled through forms rather than CVs. The NHS route is covered in the guide to the NHS doctor CV.
- Academic posts: a faculty application usually wants a complete publication list, grants and a teaching record, which makes it longer than this example.
- Germany: the Approbation file needs a CV in German tabular form; the Germany guide covers it.
- Final-year students: lead with the intern year and its rotations, since there is no specialty training to show yet.
Applying abroad and what to do next
Two guides cover the country rules this page leaves out. The Germany guide explains Approbation, Berufserlaubnis, the medical language exam and the knowledge test. The NHS guide covers GMC registration and NHS application forms. If your degree needs an official comparison abroad, the page on degree recognition shows how to write the result.
If you keep your posts, rotations and papers as a list of facts, CitedCV can write the CV in English, Turkish or German from them, with every line tied to the fact it came from. It does not know licensing rules; the registration line is yours to check.
- Export procedure counts from your logbook or e-portfolio.
- Write the registration line for the country you are applying to.
- List training posts with start month, end month and expected completion.
- Put audits, papers and teaching under their own headings, in one citation style.
- Read the posting and move the most relevant rotation or procedure to the top of its section.
Questions people ask
Should I put my TUS score on an English CV?
Usually the placement is enough: the exam name, the period and the branch you were placed in. Add the K or T score when a Turkish employer asks for it.
How do I list intern year rotations on a doctor CV?
Put them on one line under the intern year with the department names, and add months only where a rotation was unusually long or matters for the post.
How do I show a residency that is not finished?
Write “present” as the end date and add an expected completion month based on the branch length in table 7 of the TUS guide.
Where do audits go on a medical CV?
Give them their own heading with the topic, the number of cases, the change made and whether you re-audited, since a closed loop shows more than one round.
Can a doctor trained in Türkiye work in the UK or the US?
Yes, after registering in that country: with the GMC in the UK, or with a state licence in the US, which BLS says needs residency and national exams.
Should a doctor CV mention tabip odası membership?
Only if you are a member. Law 6023 makes it compulsory within a month for doctors in private practice and voluntary for those in permanent public posts.
What is the difference between a clinical CV and an academic medical CV?
A clinical CV leads with posts, procedures and on-call duties; an academic CV leads with publications, grants and teaching, and is usually longer.
