Graphic designer CV: from the brief to the line that gets the portfolio opened
A graphic designer CV turns each brief into one line: who it was for, what you delivered in which media, the constraint you worked within, and what happened next. One portfolio link, sorted by kind of work, carries the visuals.1
Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides
Start with a list of briefs, not a layout
Designers tend to open a layout tool first and fill it in later. Reverse that. A plain list of the jobs you did tells you which ones deserve a line, which ones deserve a portfolio page, and which ones can go.
- Write down every brief from the last three years: client or department, deliverable, media, month and year.
- Mark the ones that went to print, launched or ran as a campaign. Concepts that never shipped can stay in the portfolio but rarely earn a CV line.
- Next to each, note one constraint: a budget, a print spec, a brand guideline, a deadline counted in days.
- Note what happened after release, if you know: a sales figure, a reprint, an award, adoption across a brand.
- Group the briefs by kind of work. Those groups become the sections of your portfolio and the order of your CV lines.
What studios and in-house teams check
The National Careers Service describes a graphic designer’s week as discussing the client’s requirements, planning budgets and deadlines, producing drafts of images, wording, colours and layout, preparing artwork in design software and presenting ideas for approval. It says you will need a good working knowledge of desktop design, image editing and publishing software for all jobs.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics is direct: candidates for graphic design positions should have a portfolio that demonstrates creativity and originality. O*NET’s task list for Graphic Designers (27-1024.00) starts with creating layouts, reviewing final layouts and choosing the size and arrangement of illustration, copy and type.
- The portfolio link, and whether the first three pieces match the job.
- Range across media, or depth in the one the job needs: packaging, editorial, digital, motion.
- Signs of production skill: print-ready files, brand guidelines followed, work that actually shipped.
- Who you answered to: an art director, a client, a marketing team.
- Software named in the advert, shown in the work.
Is a degree required?
BLS says graphic designers typically need a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related fine arts field, and that people with a bachelor’s degree in another field may meet most hiring qualifications through technical training in graphic design. The NCS lists foundation degrees, HNDs, degrees and college courses as routes in. Put the qualification on the CV, but let the portfolio answer the question of skill.
From brief to CV line
The brief and its limit
Name the client or department and the deliverable, then the constraint that made it hard: “for a two-colour print run”, “inside the parent brand’s guidelines”, “in four working days”. The constraint is what separates a designer from someone who can operate the software.
What you delivered, and in how many formats
Counts matter in graphic design because so much of the work is adaptation: one key visual resized into 24 ad formats, a 48-page annual report, packaging for 6 product variants. Write the count.
What happened next
You often will not know the sales effect, and inventing one is worse than leaving it out. Things you usually can know: it was printed, it ran nationally, the client reordered, the template is now used by other teams, it won or was shortlisted for something.
| Kind of work | What to count | What to say about the result |
|---|---|---|
| Brand identity | Logo, palette, type, number of applications designed | Rolled out to which channels; guideline adopted by whom |
| Packaging | SKUs or variants, dielines, print method | On shelf in which stores or markets; reprints |
| Editorial and print | Pages, issues, print run if known | Published, distributed, deadlines met |
| Digital ads and social | Formats and sizes, campaigns per month | Platform results only if the marketing team shared them |
| Motion | Length, number of cuts, software | Where it ran: broadcast, event screens, social |
Example: in-house and freelance lines (invented designer)
Example only. Ayla Şen, Kuzey Foods and every client name below are invented. Figures are set to look normal for a designer with six years of work, not drawn from a real person.
Ayla Şen, Graphic Designer, Izmir. Portfolio: aylasen.com/work (sections: Packaging, Brand, Print, Digital).
In-house experience
- Graphic Designer, Kuzey Foods (in-house marketing team of 7), Izmir, 04/2021 to present: reports to the brand manager; designs packaging, point-of-sale and digital ads for 3 product brands.
- Redesigned packaging for 14 yoghurt variants within the parent brand’s guidelines; prepared print-ready files with dielines for flexographic print; the range went on shelf in two national supermarket chains in 2024.
- Built a key-visual template system in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator that the 2 junior designers now use for 30 to 40 ad sizes a month.
- Produced a 36-page trade catalogue in 3 languages each year since 2022; delivered every edition to the printer on the agreed date.
Freelance work
- Freelance designer, 2019 to present (evenings, about 6 clients a year): brand identities for 2 cafés and a dental clinic; event posters for a jazz festival over 3 seasons; book covers for a small publisher.
- Identity for Limon Café: logo, menu, signage and cups; applied across 2 branches.
Why the freelance block is short
Freelance work proves range and initiative, but the in-house role is what the reader will weigh. Two lines are enough; the portfolio carries the visuals. If freelance is your main work, swap the order and add the number of clients and the years.
One portfolio address, sorted by kind of work
Give one address on the CV, near your name, and make its first screen show sections rather than a wall of thumbnails. If you apply to a packaging studio, send the link to the packaging section. Behance, Dribbble and a personal site are all fine; what matters is that each project page shows the brief in a sentence, your role, and the finished piece in use, not only the flat artwork.
- Put the work closest to the job first, even if something else is prettier.
- Show the shipped version: the printed box, the poster on the wall, the ad in its slot.
- Credit the team: art director, copywriter, photographer.
- Remove client work you are not allowed to show; check the contract or ask.
Tools and production skills
| Area | Name on the CV | Show it with |
|---|---|---|
| Layout and print | Adobe InDesign, prepress, colour profiles, PDF/X export | A catalogue or report in the portfolio; “print-ready files” in a line |
| Vector and identity | Adobe Illustrator, logo systems, brand guidelines | An identity project with its applications |
| Image editing | Adobe Photoshop, retouching, compositing | Before and after, if the client allows |
| Digital | Figma, Canva for teams, ad formats, basic HTML and CSS | A campaign set in several sizes |
| Motion | Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro | A short reel link |
| Typography | Type pairing, hierarchy, multilingual setting | Editorial spreads; work set in two scripts or languages |
O*NET’s technology list for graphic designers includes Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Creative Cloud, Figma, Canva and After Effects. Name only what you used in the work you link to.
Certificates and professional bodies
Adobe Certified Professional exams are delivered by Certiport, a Pearson VUE business, and each exam is tied to one Adobe application. List the application and the year. The NCS names the Chartered Society of Designers and the International Society of Typographical Designers as professional bodies; membership is optional and goes at the end of the CV.
A designed CV or a plain CV: send the right one
A designer’s CV is itself a sample, which tempts people into columns, icons and skill bars. That works when a person opens the file and fails when software reads it first. Keep two versions with the same words.
| Designed version | Plain version | |
|---|---|---|
| When to send | Email to a studio, portfolio review, a referral | Online application forms and job boards |
| Layout | Your typography and grid, still one clear reading order | One column, standard headings, no text boxes |
| Skills | Words, never bars or dots | Words, grouped by area |
| Check before sending | Select the text in the PDF; if you cannot, it is an image | Run it through a parser check |
The Canva guide explains why a designed export sometimes reads badly. CitedCV’s free checker runs in your browser without an account, flags layout a parser may misread and shows its own parser view of your PDF or DOCX, a quick way to test either version.

- Product and app design built on user research belongs to the UX/UI designer guide.
- Illustration-only careers lead with a body of personal work and publishers, not briefs.
- Rates, contracts and invoicing for freelancers are outside a CV guide.
Applying abroad, then next
No country guide for designers exists yet on this site. The guide to applying for jobs abroad covers translation, format and the right-to-work line. Rename portfolio sections into the language of the country, and set at least one project in that language if you can.
- Write the brief list and group it.
- Turn the best five or six briefs into lines with a count and a constraint.
- Fix the portfolio order, then make the plain version of the CV from the same text.
Questions people ask
Should a graphic designer CV be creative?
It can be, for a person who opens the file. For online forms, send a plain one-column version with the same words, because forms often read the text automatically.
Where do I put my portfolio link on a graphic design CV?
Next to your name and contact details, as one address whose first screen shows sections by kind of work.
What skills should a graphic designer put on a CV?
Name software and production skills you can show in linked work: layout, prepress, identity, image editing, digital formats, motion and typography.
Graphic designer CV with no experience: what should it show?
Coursework and personal briefs with real constraints, any freelance or volunteer job that shipped, and a portfolio sorted by the kind of work you want.
Should I use skill bars on a designer CV?
No. A bar says nothing a reader can check, and software often cannot read it; list skills as words and show them in the portfolio.
How do I list freelance graphic design work on a CV?
Use one entry with the years, the number of clients and the kinds of work, then one or two lines for the strongest projects.
Do I need Adobe certification to get a design job?
No official profile read for this guide requires it. It can support a junior application; the portfolio still decides.
