Is a Canva resume ATS-friendly?
It depends on the template and the exported file, not on Canva. A single-column PDF whose text you can highlight and paste in order gives a parser what it needs; Greenhouse lists columns, text boxes and images as parse risks.1

Check your CV for ATS problems, no account needed
Drop a PDF, DOCX or text file, or paste the text. You get a score, the problems a parser trips on, and your CV as a parser files it.
Runs in your browser. The file and its text never leave this device.
Canva and ATS: the short answer
A resume made in Canva is not ATS-friendly or unfriendly by itself. ATS means applicant tracking system, the software an employer uses to receive and search applications, such as Greenhouse, Lever or Workday. What its parser needs is in the file you export: real text, in the order you read it, with no sidebar or picture standing in for words. Some templates give you that and some do not, and you can check your own file in two minutes.
What decides it
Two properties. First, the text is text, not a picture of text: Lever's test is to try highlighting it with your cursor, and if you cannot, the document is likely not parseable. Second, the text comes out in reading order: Workday's documentation says parsing results can vary with the resume's format and the order of words.
What this page does not claim
Canva's Help Center, read on 5 October 2026, says three things that matter here. A resume design downloads as a PDF, with a Digital or a Print preset (PDF Standard at 96 dpi, PDF Print at 300 dpi); a Word (DOCX) download exists only for Canva Docs, not for other design types. The Flatten PDF switch under Advanced settings merges every element into one image, so leave it off: a flattened file has no text you can highlight, which is Lever's own sign that a file is likely not parseable. And a password, offered on PDF Standard, gives a parser a file it cannot open.
What Canva itself advises
Canva's resume templates page says an ATS-friendly resume uses clear headings such as Work Experience or Skills, avoids text boxes, tables and images, uses a standard legible font and adds keywords from the target role. Its gallery has templates with ATS in their name; a name is not a test, so check the file you download.
What to do in the first minute
Open the PDF you downloaded and try to select your name and the first line of your latest job. If both highlight, copy the whole page and paste it into Notepad, or TextEdit in plain text mode. Or drop the PDF into the free checker at the top of this page: no account, no credits, and it runs in your browser.
| What you see | What it points to |
|---|---|
| Nothing highlights | The page is a picture. Lever cannot parse image files; Greenhouse lists resumes uploaded as images. |
| Text highlights and pastes out in order | The file carries what a parser needs; check the details in the steps below. |
| Sidebar lines land inside a job | A columned layout, which is on Greenhouse's list of parse problems. |
| Your email or phone is missing from the paste | The contact details are not plain text on the page, for example part of an image. |
| Headings paste as S K I L L S | Spaced-out letters, also on Greenhouse's list. |
Steps: a Canva resume a parser can read
- Pick a single-column template: one column of text from top to bottom, with no sidebar and no text running beside other text.
- Put your name, email, phone and city as ordinary text at the top of the page, not inside a picture, an icon or a separate box.
- Remove skill bars, rating dots and icons, and write levels in words, such as 'Spanish, fluent'. Whether to keep a photo is a country question.
- Use plain headings in normal letter spacing: Experience, Education, Skills.
- Download as a PDF, not as a PNG or JPG, which are pictures, and leave Flatten PDF and the password off under Advanced settings.
- Run the highlight test and the paste test below on the file you downloaded.
- Check the file size: Greenhouse cannot parse files larger than 2.5 MB.
- Fix what the tests show, download again and test again.
The highlight test
Open the PDF and drag your cursor across a line. If the words highlight, the line is text. If nothing highlights, the page is an image, and Lever says such a document is likely not parseable. A scanned printout behaves the same way.
The paste test
- Select all (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A) and copy.
- Paste into a plain text editor.
- Read from the top: your name and contact details should come first.
- Check each job: employer, title and dates together, then its bullet points.
- Check that skills and languages sit in their own section, not between two lines of a job.
Check it with the free checker
The CitedCV checker at the top of this page reads a PDF in your browser, with no account and no credits, and calls no language model. For a resume exported from a design tool, these findings matter most:
- More than one column, including a sidebar of short lines such as skills, languages and contact details.
- Pages that are a picture with no text layer. A PDF with no selectable text at all is refused with the reason.
- Skill bars drawn as shapes with no level written in words.
- A missing email, or no headings or dates it can recognise.
The parser view shows your resume with the formatting stripped, in the order the checker reads it, each line filed under a section such as Header, Experience or Skills. It is CitedCV's own reading. When it finds two columns it says so, because another system may not separate them the way it does.
What it cannot tell you
- It does not run Greenhouse's, Lever's or Workday's parser, so it cannot reproduce an employer's result.
- It accepts files up to 5 MB and does not compare the size with Greenhouse's 2.5 MB limit.
- It does not check fonts, letter spacing, photos or logos.
What the vendors and career services say
Read on 5 October 2026 and listed under Sources. These are design features, not Canva features: the same list applies to a resume made in Word, Google Docs or any design tool.
| Design feature | What the documentation says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Two columns or a sidebar | Columned layouts are a cause of an unsuccessful parse | Greenhouse |
| Contact details in a header, footer or text box | All three placements are on the list | Greenhouse |
| Icons, photos, skill bars, decorative shapes | Graphics, photos and word art are on the list; Workday recommends resumes without images or image-based styles | Greenhouse; Workday |
| Tables used for layout | Complex resumes with tables, headers and footers are on the list | Greenhouse |
| Headings in spaced-out letters | Spaces between the letters are on the list | Greenhouse |
| The page saved as PNG or JPG | Image files cannot be parsed; resumes uploaded as images are on the list | Lever; Greenhouse |
| A file over 2.5 MB | Files larger than 2.5 MB cannot be parsed | Greenhouse |
Why the sidebar is the usual suspect
A common resume design puts skills, languages and contact details in a narrow side column. Your eye reads the main column first; a parser that takes the text in another order can put a sidebar line between a job title and its dates, or file your skills under the wrong job. The paste test shows whether that happens to your file.
What university career services say
The University of Connecticut's career centre says digital tools like Canva, LaTeX and other resume builders may use formatting an ATS cannot read. The University of Pennsylvania warns that not all applicant tracking systems can read decorative formatting such as tables, shapes, graphics and images. The University of Utah advises avoiding columns, tables, text boxes, coloured text and graphics. None of them says every Canva file fails; they warn about the formatting.
A failed parse is not a rejection
When Greenhouse cannot parse a resume, the file is only attached to the candidate and a recruiter types the details in by hand. Greenhouse's candidate FAQ also lets you review and edit parsed information before you submit. Neither Greenhouse nor Lever describes a rejection for formatting.
Who this page is not for
- You are applying for a design role and the posting asks for a designed CV or a portfolio. Follow the posting; the test still tells you what a system would get.
- You need to know what one employer's system will do. No outside check can show that; upload to that employer's form and read the fields it fills in.
- Your CV exists only as an image or a scan. Rebuild it as text first; no layout fix helps a picture.
Alternatives if your Canva resume fails the test
| Option | What you get | Cost and account |
|---|---|---|
| A single-column Canva template | Your tool and your content, in a layout with fewer listed risks; test it again | Canva's own advice: clear headings, no text boxes, tables or images; download unflattened |
| A Google Docs resume template | A document you download as PDF or Word (.docx) | Free with a Google Account |
| A Word for the web template, including the set Microsoft calls ATS-friendly | A Word document you export as PDF | Free web version with a Microsoft account |
| Europass | The EU CV format in 31 languages, saved as PDF | Free; a guest profile is kept 48 hours |
| CitedCV | Upload the Canva PDF if its text is selectable, confirm each fact, rebuild in a single-column template, export PDF, DOCX or TXT | 6 free credits at signup cover one quick draft; email and password, no card |
Keeping the design for people
If you like your Canva design, keep it for when a person asks for your CV by email or wants a printout, and send a plain single-column version through application forms. Make sure both files say the same thing.
Limits, stated plainly
- The vendor and university pages were read on 5 October 2026 and change over time; each employer also configures its own system.
- This page reports what Canva's Help Center says about downloads and flattening; it makes no claim about how Canva's PDF engine places text, which is why the test matters.
- The checker is CitedCV's own rule set, not an employer's parser.
- A file that parses cleanly gets your resume read as written. It does not get you an interview, and no tool can promise one.
Questions people ask
Is Canva ATS friendly?
It depends on the template and the PDF you export, not on Canva alone. A single-column design whose text you can highlight and paste in reading order gives a parser what it needs; sidebars, text boxes and images are listed risks.
Is a Canva PDF ATS friendly?
It is if its text can be selected and pastes out in reading order. Try highlighting a line, paste the whole text into a plain text editor, or run the file through the free checker on this page.
Can an ATS read a Canva resume?
Yes, when the file has selectable text in a simple layout. Lever cannot parse image files, and Greenhouse lists columns, text boxes and graphics among parse problems, so a picture-only or two-column export is the risk.
Which Canva resume template is ATS friendly?
One with a single column of text, plain headings, contact details as ordinary text at the top, and no icons or skill bars. Then test the downloaded PDF, because a label on a template is not a test.
Should I download my Canva resume as PDF or PNG?
PDF. A PNG or JPG is a picture of text: Lever cannot parse image files, and Greenhouse lists resumes uploaded as images among the causes of a failed parse.
Will a recruiter reject my resume because it was made in Canva?
Not for the tool, according to the documentation cited here. When Greenhouse cannot parse a resume, the file stays attached and a recruiter types the details in; neither Greenhouse nor Lever describes that as a rejection.
How do I make my Canva resume ATS friendly?
Switch to a single-column template, put contact details at the top as plain text, replace skill bars with words, download as PDF, and run the highlight and paste tests before you apply.
Is a two-column Canva resume bad for ATS?
It is a risk, not a certain failure. Greenhouse lists columned layouts among the causes of an unsuccessful parse. Paste the text into a plain editor: if sidebar lines land inside your jobs, move to one column.
