The Harvard resume template: what it is and whether it is ATS-friendly

The Harvard resume template, a free Word and Google Docs file from Harvard College's career office, is ATS-friendly in layout: one column, newest first, bullets, standard headings, no tables. Still, test your own exported file.1

Check your CV for ATS problems, no account needed

Drop a PDF, DOCX or text file, or paste the text. You get a score, the problems a parser trips on, and your CV as a parser files it.

Runs in your browser. The file and its text never leave this device.

What the Harvard resume template is

Harvard College's career office, the Mignone Center for Career Success, publishes two resume templates, one with bullet points and one with short paragraphs. Each comes as a Word file, an accessible Word file and a Google Docs copy, next to sample resumes for tech and engineering students. On this page, 'the Harvard resume template' means these files and the plain look of their samples.

Harvard does not sell it as an ATS template. The template pages say nothing about applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software employers use to receive and search applications. A separate Harvard page on AI and resumes does recommend basic formatting, explicitly listed skills and keywords from the job description in context.

What it looks like

  • Your name centred at the top, then one contact line (address, email, phone) in the body of the page, not in a header.
  • Centred section headings: Education, Experience, Leadership & Activities, Skills & Interests.
  • Each entry on two lines: the organisation in bold with the city pushed to the right, then the job title with the dates pushed to the right.
  • Bullets that start with an action verb, written as phrases without I or we, with numbers where possible.
  • One column, set in Calibri on US Letter paper, with no tables, no text boxes and nothing in the page header or footer.

The rules Harvard's guide adds

Harvard's resume guide asks for consistent formatting, headings in order of importance and, within each heading, reverse chronological order, most recent first. It says to make sure the formatting survives conversion to PDF. And it lists what to leave out: a picture, your age or gender, references, personal pronouns, and lines that start with a date.

What to do in the first minute

If your resume already uses this layout, export it to PDF and drop it into the free checker at the top of this page; it needs no account and shows the text in the order a parser reads it. If you are starting from Harvard's file, replace every placeholder before you upload anything. The template opens with 'Firstname Lastname', and Greenhouse warns that obviously fake data, such as a name like 'First Last', can make a resume fail to parse.

Is it ATS-friendly? What the vendor documentation says

No ATS vendor rates templates. What vendors document is which layouts break parsing, the step where the system copies your resume into its fields. Set against those lists, read on 5 October 2026 and named under Sources, Harvard's layout avoids each cause:

Documented cause of failed parsingDocumented byIn the Harvard template
Columned layoutsGreenhouseOne column
Tables, headers and footersGreenhouseNo tables; nothing in the header or footer
Name and contact details in a header, footer or text boxGreenhouseIn the first lines of the body
Graphics, photos or word art; image-based stylesGreenhouse; WorkdayNo photo, as Harvard advises; one thin drawn line under the contact line
Inconsistent section formattingGreenhouseCentred headings throughout; Harvard asks for consistent formatting
A resume uploaded as an imageGreenhouse; LeverSelectable text, when exported from Word or Google Docs
Results that vary with format and word orderWorkdayThe same order in every entry: organisation, city, title, dates, bullets

What still depends on you

  • File size: Greenhouse cannot parse files over 2.5 MB.
  • Leftover placeholders, such as 'Firstname Lastname' or the template's '[Note: ...]' hints.
  • Headings renamed into something creative, which a parser has to guess at.
  • Dates moved to the start of each line, which Harvard tells you not to do.
  • Paper size and personal details for a country other than the US (see below).

We tested Harvard's own files

On 5 October 2026 we opened the bullet-point Word file linked from Harvard's template page and the tech resume example PDF (dated 07/26), and read both the way a parser does.

  • The Word file holds all its text in single-column sections, with no tables, no text boxes and no header or footer text. It also contains one empty section break set to three columns, with no text in it.
  • A PDF exported from that Word file (we used LibreOffice) read as one column, in the right order, in CitedCV's PDF reader, pdf.js.
  • In the tech example PDF, both pdf.js and Poppler's pdftotext put the heading 'Relevant Experience' after the first employer and job title, and read 'networking night' with spaces between the letters. Someone reading the page sees neither; Greenhouse lists spaces between letters among the causes of failed parsing.

The layout is sound. A particular file made from it can still carry problems nobody can see on screen, which is why the last step is always to test the file you will send.

How to adapt it outside the US

The template is written for US employers. Prospects notes that what the UK calls a CV is known as a résumé in the USA and Canada; in Turkey the same document is a CV or özgeçmiş. CitedCV's page on CV versus resume covers the naming. What changes is mostly personal details and paper:

ItemHarvard (US)UKTurkey
Name of the documentResumeCVCV or özgeçmiş
PhotoDo not include a pictureNo, unless for acting or modelling (Prospects)Kariyer.net says CVs without a photo are not well received
Age, date of birth, marital statusDo not include age or genderLeave out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality (National Careers Service)Kariyer.net says details such as ID number and marital status do more harm than good
Contact lineStreet address, email, phoneName, phone, email and a professional profile link (National Careers Service)Email and phone are enough, per Kariyer.net
Paper and lengthUS Letter; MIT advises one page unless you have extensive experienceUp to two A4 pages (Prospects)A4
Language levelsFluent, conversationalWords, or CEFR levelsCEFR levels such as B2, as Europass uses

The photo question

Outside the US a photo is a trade-off: Kariyer.net says CVs without a photo are not well received in Turkey, while Greenhouse lists photos among the causes of failed parsing. CitedCV's page on CV photos and ATS goes through it country by country.

Headings in another language

If the CV is not in English, translate the headings into the plain names a local reader expects, such as Eğitim, İş Deneyimi and Beceriler in Turkish, rather than keeping Harvard's English labels.

How to test your version before you send it

  1. Export to PDF from Word or Google Docs. Harvard's guide asks you to check that the formatting survives conversion, and Greenhouse's candidate FAQ recommends uploading a PDF.
  2. Try to highlight a line of text. If nothing highlights, the page is a picture, which Lever says cannot be parsed.
  3. Check that the file is under 2.5 MB, the Greenhouse limit.
  4. Select all, copy, and paste into a plain text editor. Your name and contact details should come first, headings in order, and each entry should keep organisation, title and dates together, with no spaced-out letters.
  5. Run the free checker at the top of this page and read its parser view and layout findings.
  6. When you apply, check every field the form filled in; on Workday, type your skills and languages yourself, since it does not auto-fill them.

Where CitedCV fits

CitedCV's 8 templates (3 free, 5 premium) share the structure that makes Harvard's layout parse well: one column, standard headings, no tables and nothing in the header or footer. They differ in typography and header treatment. None is a copy of Harvard's file, and Harvard has no connection with them. The free Classic template is closest in look: a serif typeface in black, with dates on the right.

  • Roles are ordered most recent first.
  • A CV for the US prints on Letter paper; every other region prints on A4. Photo and date of birth follow the region you pick: never for the US or UK, allowed for Turkey and Germany.
  • Exports to PDF, DOCX and TXT are free. Each PDF and DOCX export is read back by a text extractor and compared with the CV it should carry, and the result is recorded.
  • It writes only from the facts you give it and asks when something is missing, so there is no placeholder text to forget.

How our checker reads this template

  • It counts columns only in sections that hold text, so the empty three-column section break in Harvard's Word file raises no column warning: the text sits in one column.
  • It knows Harvard's headings: Experience and Relevant Experience as experience, Leadership & Activities as activities judged like experience, Skills & Interests and Technical Skills & Projects as skills.
  • On the unfilled template it still reports no dates and no numbers. Those findings come from the placeholder lines and go away when you write your own entries.

Who this page is not for

  • You need an academic CV. Harvard's career office publishes separate templates for PhD and master's students and a CV guide for graduate students.
  • You work in design and need a portfolio-style layout; a one-column text resume will not show your work.
  • You hope the Harvard name helps. None of the vendor documentation cited here mentions template names; a parser reads text and layout, not where a template came from.

Questions people ask

What is the Harvard resume template?

It is the free resume template from Harvard College's Mignone Center for Career Success, in bullet-point and paragraph versions, as Word and Google Docs files: one column, newest first, standard headings.

Is the Harvard resume template ATS-friendly?

Yes, in layout: it avoids the columns, tables, headers and graphics that Greenhouse lists as causes of failed parsing. A particular exported file can still have problems, so test the PDF you send.

Does Harvard say its template is made for ATS?

No, its template pages make no ATS claim. Its page on AI and resumes recommends basic formatting, explicitly listed skills and keywords from the job description in context.

Can I use a Harvard-style resume in the UK or Turkey?

Yes, with changes: call it a CV, switch to A4 and follow local rules on personal details. UK guidance says to leave out your date of birth; in Turkey, Kariyer.net says CVs without a photo are not well received.

Is a Harvard resume one page?

Not by rule: the Harvard guide we read sets no resume length, though its sample resumes each fit on one page. MIT's career office advises one page unless you have extensive experience or an advanced degree; Prospects allows two A4 pages in the UK.

Should I use the bullet-point or the paragraph template?

Either parses the same way; the difference is for the reader. Bullets let you start each line with an action verb and tailor line by line, as the bullet template asks; paragraphs suit short roles.

How do I check if my Harvard-style resume is ATS-friendly?

Export it to PDF, check that you can highlight the text and that the file is under 2.5 MB, paste it into a plain text editor to see the reading order, then run a free checker such as CitedCV's.

Does the Harvard Word template have columns?

No, its text sits in one column. The Word file does contain an empty section break set to three columns, so a checker that counts every section may report columns; CitedCV's checker counts only sections that hold text.
