Does an ATS-friendly CV have a photo?
It depends on the country. US and UK CVs carry no photo; German and Turkish CVs usually do. Greenhouse lists photos among formatting issues that can cause a partial parse.1

Check your CV for ATS problems, no account needed
Drop a PDF, DOCX or text file, or paste the text. You get a score, the problems a parser trips on, and your CV as a parser files it.
Runs in your browser. The file and its text never leave this device.
The short answer
It depends on the country, and an ATS-friendly CV can be built with a photo or without one. In the United States and the United Kingdom the convention is no photo. In Germany and Turkey a photo is customary. Europass, the European Union's CV tool, lists adding a professional photograph among its tips.
ATS stands for applicant tracking system, the software employers use to receive and parse applications, such as Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors or iCIMS. The document is a CV in the UK, Europe and Turkey and a résumé in the US; this page says CV for both.
Photo conventions by country
What each publisher says. An employer's own posting overrides it.
| Market | What the publisher says | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Employers should not ask applicants for a photograph; one may be obtained after an offer is accepted if needed for identification. | U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) |
| United Kingdom | Unless you are applying for acting or modelling work, you do not need a photograph. | Prospects |
| Germany | Not strictly required, but still expected by a majority of employers. | Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) |
| Turkey | CVs without a photo are not well received. | Kariyer.net |
| European Union | Adding a professional photograph is among the tips for a good CV. | Europass |
Why the US and UK advise against a photo
The EEOC says information about race, sex, national origin, age and religion is irrelevant to whether someone is qualified, that questions which may reveal it can be used as evidence of discriminatory intent, and that employers should not ask for a photograph. A photograph can show some of those things at a glance. This describes US and UK practice and is not legal advice.
Why Germany and Turkey expect one
These describe custom, not rules: neither the Bundesagentur für Arbeit nor Kariyer.net says an employer will reject a CV for lacking a photo. Without one, it may be received less well.
Does a photo break an applicant tracking system?
What Greenhouse says
Sometimes, depending on the system and where the picture sits in the file. Greenhouse's support article on unsuccessful resume parses lists resumes that include graphics, photos or word art among its formatting issues, beside tables, headers and footers, contact details in a header, footer or text box, columned layouts and resumes uploaded as an image. It says such issues may result in a partial parse that needs manual correction and verification; it does not describe a rejection.
What that means for where the picture sits
A picture adds no words. A layout that puts it and your contact lines in one table cell, text box or header is what Greenhouse's list describes. The safe arrangement: every word in the page body in reading order, the picture beside it, no words inside it. This page makes no claim about Workday, Lever, Taleo, SuccessFactors or iCIMS.
What to do in the first minute
One action, and it costs nothing: place yourself in the table above, then paste-test your own file.
- US or UK: take the photo off your CV. This costs nothing.
- Germany, Turkey or another market where a photo is customary: keep it, select all the text in your PDF, paste it into a plain text editor and check that your name, contacts and sections come out first and in order. It is free, needs no account and takes about two minutes.
- Nothing pastes? Your CV is probably an image or a scan.
- To have CitedCV do it: create an account (free), add a photo on the Facts page (no credits) and choose a region when you build.
Costs: an account is free and starts with 6 credits, enough for one quick draft (6 credits). A full build costs 10 credits, bought in a one-time credit pack (from $9 for 30 credits, paid once, never renewed). Photo on or off for a built CV, and PDF or DOCX export, cost no credits.
How the photo works in CitedCV
- Add one photo on your Facts page. Your browser crops it to 3:4 around the centre and re-encodes it as a JPEG; the server reads it again, drops all metadata, including the location and camera serial number a phone adds, and refuses oversized or mis-shaped files.
- Choose a region (US, UK, EU, Turkey or Germany) when you build. If a photo is on file, a box reads 'Put my photo on this CV': disabled for the US and UK, available for the EU, pre-ticked for Germany and Turkey.
- The server has the last word: a US or UK CV never receives the photo, whatever the form said.
- Both renderers draw it at 30 by 40 mm beside the header text, as a row in the PDF and an anchored picture in the DOCX. Switching it on or off later makes a new version of the CV and costs no credits.
Where the photo is stored and how to remove it
What is stored
One photo per profile, in CitedCV's private storage on Cloudflare under your user folder, served only to you when signed in. It is not one of the facts the writing model reads. A photo is personal data: the GDPR covers any information relating to an identifiable person, and its Recital 51 says photographs are not systematically special-category data. CitedCV stores one only if you add it.
How long it stays and how to remove it
It stays until you remove it or delete your account. Exports carrying it are deleted after 90 days. Removing or replacing the photo deletes every stored export of yours at once. Deleting your account removes everything under your user folder except payment receipts, and the privacy policy allows 30 days for backups to expire. The privacy export includes the photo file.
What we have measured
Our own figures, from CitedCV's code and repository.
- Photo limits: no larger than 512 KB, 450 to 1,200 pixels wide, 600 to 1,600 pixels high, width divided by height within 0.02 of 0.75 (CitedCV image check).
- Same words with and without a photo: for all eight templates a test renders one CV both ways and finds identical text in the HTML the PDF is printed from; a DOCX test does the same for the Classic template (CitedCV tests).
- Staging render, 2026-09-18: one CV with a 600 by 800 pixel photo went through the real render workflow; the PDF held the JPEG and the text read back at 1.0, where a pass is 0.98 with every anchor whole (CitedCV runbook; one document, not a benchmark).
- Greenhouse cannot parse resumes larger than 2.5 MB (Greenhouse Support); CitedCV's 512 KB photo limit is about a fifth of that.
Who this is not for
- Anyone applying in the US or UK: CitedCV leaves the photo off whatever you choose.
- Anyone who wants a round photo, another position or several pictures: CitedCV crops one picture to 3:4 around the centre and prints it at 30 by 40 mm beside the header; you cannot move or crop it by hand.
- Anyone who wants a design-led layout: all eight templates are single-column.
Alternatives and whom they fit
From this site's comparison pages, read on 2026-09-08; check each vendor's pages for today's position.
- Europass CV editor: the EU's own tool, whose guidance recommends a professional photograph. It fits a candidate who wants an EU-standard document; its page does not mention applicant tracking systems, so paste-test the export.
- Kickresume: more than 40 resume templates on paid plans, four on the free plan, no regional presets described. It fits someone who wants design range; check that a template takes a photo first.
- Enhancv: single-column, double-column and multi-page templates, a 27-check resume checker, no regional presets described. It fits someone improving an existing resume; Greenhouse lists columned layouts as a formatting issue, so pick single-column.
- Word or Google Docs by hand: it fits someone who wants full control of where the photo sits; paste-test the result.
What this page and CitedCV cannot tell you
No tool can tell you what a particular employer prefers; the posting, the careers page or a recruiter can. Whether to include a photo is your decision. CitedCV cannot test your file inside an employer's system: its read-back uses its own text extractor, so a pass shows the words come back, not that Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, SuccessFactors or iCIMS will read them.
Questions people ask
Does an ATS-friendly CV have a photo?
It depends on the country: not in the US or UK, usually yes in Germany and Turkey. ATS-friendly describes layout and text, so either works.
Can an ATS read a CV with a photo?
Not always. Greenhouse lists photos among formatting issues that can cause a partial parse. Keep every word outside the picture and paste-test your file.
Should I put a photo on a US or UK CV?
No. The EEOC says employers should not ask for a photograph, Prospects says UK candidates do not need one, and CitedCV leaves it off.
Do I need a photo on a German CV?
No, but one is still expected: the Bundesagentur für Arbeit says a majority of employers expect it. CitedCV adds it on request.
Is a Europass CV ATS friendly?
Not known. The Europass page we read does not mention applicant tracking systems; paste-test your own export.
Does CitedCV keep my photo, and can I delete it?
Yes, until you remove it or delete your account. Removing it also deletes every stored export.
How much does adding a photo cost?
Nothing: adding it, switching it on or off and exporting cost no credits. The CV it goes on costs 6 credits for a quick draft or 10 for a full build.
