Statement of purpose vs personal statement: what each school asks for

A statement of purpose argues your academic fit: preparation, research interests, plans. A personal statement explains how your background led you to apply. Berkeley and Cornell ask for both; the UCAS personal statement is closer to a statement of purpose.1

First: read the prompt, not the label

The two names are used loosely. A UK undergraduate "personal statement" asks mostly academic questions, and a London graduate school calls its essay a "statement of academic purpose". Before you plan anything, open each program's application page and write down five things.

  1. How many essays it wants. Cornell asks every graduate applicant for two; LSE asks for one per programme; UCAS has one statement split into three questions.
  2. The exact prompt for each essay, copied word for word into your notes.
  3. The length: words, characters or pages. Some pages give none, which means the program sets it.
  4. Whether you must name faculty. Cornell says some programs require you to name the professors you would like to work with.
  5. The authorship rule. Cornell asks applicants to read its AI guidelines first; LSE requires statements to be all your own work.

When one program asks for only one essay

If a program asks for a single statement, its prompt decides the mix. A prompt about research interests and goals is a statement of purpose whatever it is called. A prompt about your background and experiences is a personal statement. If it asks both, give the academic part most of the space and keep one paragraph for the personal one.

How two US graduate schools split the essays

In the United States the split is clearest, because some graduate schools ask for both documents in one application and define each one.

UC Berkeley: purpose and personal history

Berkeley's Graduate Division asks for a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement. The first should describe your aptitude and motivation to enter the program, and can cover your preparation, academic plans, research interests and career goals. The second describes how your background and life experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. The requirements page sets no length for either; programs do.

Cornell: an academic statement and a personal one

Cornell's Graduate School requires an academic statement of purpose (ASOP) from every applicant. It calls it an academically focused essay, not necessarily a personal essay, and puts its typical length at one to two pages unless a program says otherwise. Its personal statement should describe how your background and experiences influenced your decision, and may cover teamwork, perspectives different from your own, and persistence through setbacks.

The rule that connects them

Cornell says the personal statement should complement rather than duplicate the academic statement. That is the working test for any pair: if a sentence would fit in both, it belongs in one of them, and you decide which by asking whether it shows what you can do in the field or why you came to it.

In the UK: UCAS and the postgraduate statement

The UCAS personal statement from 2026 entry

For undergraduate courses, UCAS replaced the free essay with three questions for 2026 entry onwards. The total stays at 4,000 characters including spaces, each answer needs at least 350 characters, and you can divide the rest as you choose. UCAS says admissions staff still review the answers as one.

  • Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  • How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  • What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Read against the US definitions, all three questions are about purpose and preparation. Very little of a Berkeley-style personal history fits here, and UCAS's own list of don'ts includes copying and quoting other people.

LSE: the statement of academic purpose

For graduate programmes LSE asks for a statement explaining your academic interest in, understanding of and preparedness for the programme, and why you chose it. It expects 1,000 to 1,500 words, strongly encourages a separate statement for each programme, wants your name and programme title in the header or footer of every page, and asks applicants to avoid general remarks about LSE's place in global rankings. Circumstances that disrupted your education go in a separate document uploaded as an additional item, not in the statement.

Sorting table: one applicant, two essays

The applicant is invented: Elif Demir, a chemical engineering graduate from İzmir who spent two years at a textile dye works, applying for a US master's in environmental engineering that asks for both essays. The table takes her raw material and files each piece where it does the most work. Replace every detail with your own.

Her materialStatement of purposePersonal statementReason
Senior project on removing reactive dyes with activated carbonYes: method, result, what it left unansweredNoAcademic preparation and the question she wants to study next
Two years running wastewater tests at the dye worksYes: the measurements, the treatment problem she worked onOne sentence, if it shaped the decisionProfessional preparation; the personal side is only why it mattered to her
Grew up beside a stream that ran coloured on dyeing daysNoYes: the origin of the interestBackground that led to the decision, which is what a personal history asks
First in her family to attend universityNoYes, if she chooses to share itCornell lists persistence and perspectives among the personal statement topics
Two named faculty whose papers on dye degradation she readYes: why their work fits her questionNoFit with the program; Cornell says some programs require faculty names
Plan to return to industrial water treatmentYes: career goalOptional echo in the closeBerkeley lists career goals in the statement of purpose
A failed course in her second year, retakenOne line, only if the prompt invites itPossible, framed as what changedNeither school requires it; LSE moves such context to a separate document

The same experience, two opening sentences

  • Statement of purpose: "My senior project removed 82 percent of a reactive dye with activated carbon, and two years of testing effluent at a dye works showed me why that number falls in a real plant."
  • Personal statement: "The stream behind my grandparents' house ran blue on some days and red on others, and it took an engineering degree to learn why."

The first sentence promises evidence and a research question. The second promises a story about where the interest came from. Neither repeats the other, which is the Cornell test applied line by line.

What the pages leave open

Berkeley gives no length for either statement, and neither does Cornell for its personal statement. METU's sheet lists the letter of intention but not its content; its graduate schools set the details. Where a page is silent, the program page or the application form decides, and a guess from another university does not carry over.

Limits of this comparison

  • Program rules override the graduate school's general page. Berkeley, Cornell and LSE all say to check the program.
  • Prompts change each cycle. The UCAS format changed for 2026 entry; a statement written for the old free essay does not fit the three boxes.
  • A PhD research proposal is a separate document with its own template and is not covered here.
  • Scholarship and European master's letters usually go by "motivation letter"; that guide covers their length and structure.
  • Use of AI tools is set by each institution. Cornell points applicants to its guidelines; LSE says applications may be cancelled if the statement is not your own work.

Next steps

  • Copy each program's prompts into one document and fill the sorting table with your own material before writing a sentence.
  • Ask for recommendation letters early; referees often want your statement draft, and the guide to asking for a recommendation letter covers what to send them.
  • Keep dates, titles and grades identical across the statements and the CV. CitedCV can write that CV in English, Turkish or German from the facts you enter or upload; it does not write the statements.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a statement of purpose and a personal statement?

A statement of purpose argues your academic fit for the program; a personal statement explains how your background led you to graduate study. Berkeley and Cornell define them this way and ask for both.

Is a personal statement the same as a statement of purpose?

Not at schools that ask for both, such as Cornell, which says the personal statement should complement rather than duplicate the academic one. Elsewhere the names overlap, so the prompt decides.

How long is a statement of purpose?

It depends on the school. Cornell puts one to two pages as typical, LSE expects 1,000 to 1,500 words, and Berkeley leaves the length to each program.

Is the UCAS personal statement a statement of purpose?

In content, mostly yes. Its three questions for 2026 entry ask why the subject, how your studies prepared you and what you did outside education, all within 4,000 characters.

Can I use the same essay for both statements?

No. If a school asks for both, each must do a different job; Cornell says they should not duplicate each other. Reusing one text leaves one prompt unanswered.

Should I name professors in my statement of purpose?

Yes, when the program asks or when their work is the reason you are applying. Cornell notes some programs require you to name the faculty you would like to work with.

What goes in a personal history statement?

How your background and life experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree, in Berkeley's words. Achievements belong there only as part of that story.

Where do I explain a gap or low grades?

Where the institution says. LSE asks for disrupted education in a separate additional document; at US schools a short line in the personal statement is common if the prompt allows it.
