Free CV builders: what is actually free

Free CV builders are free in different ways: on 5 October 2026 Europass and Google Docs cost nothing, FlowCV's free plan covers one resume, and Jobstep's paid plans add unlimited downloads. Check format, account and the second CV's cost.1

What 'free' means in a CV builder

A CV builder can be free in several different ways, and the pricing page usually says which one if you read it closely. The difference shows up at the end, when you download, or a week later, when you need a second version of your CV for a different job.

The kinds of free you will meet

  • Free end to end: making, downloading and keeping the CV cost nothing. Europass works this way, and so does a resume template in Google Docs or Word for the web with a free account.
  • Free for one CV: the free plan covers a single resume and more need a paid plan. FlowCV's free plan is one resume and one cover letter.
  • Free to make, limited to download: building is free and unlimited downloads come with a paid plan. Jobstep lists unlimited downloads among its paid features.
  • Free with branding: the download carries the builder's name or a watermark. FlowCV's pricing page says its free downloads carry none; for any other tool, download a test file and look.
  • Free for a while: your work is kept only for a period. A Europass guest profile stays for 48 hours after your last visit; a registered user keeps CVs in the Europass Library.
  • Free credits: a small allowance at signup, then you pay for more. CitedCV gives a new account 6 credits, enough for one quick draft.

What to do in the first minute

Before you type your whole CV into any builder, make a test. Enter your name and one job, then download it. That single download tells you the file format, whether a watermark appears, whether a payment screen comes up and whether you needed an account to get that far.

Then test the file you got

Open the download and try to highlight a line with your cursor. Lever's help page says that if you cannot highlight the text, the document is likely not parseable. Then select all, copy and paste into a plain text editor such as Notepad. If your name, the job and its dates come out in that order, the file carries real text a system can read.

How to judge a free builder: a checklist

  1. Download format. Greenhouse's candidate FAQ recommends uploading a PDF; a Word file (DOCX) is useful when a recruiter asks to edit your CV. Google Docs offers both; Europass, FlowCV and Jobstep name PDF.
  2. One column. Greenhouse lists columned layouts, tables, headers and footers, text boxes and graphics among the causes of a failed resume parse. Pick a single-column template, whatever the builder.
  3. Contact details in the body of the page, not in a header, a footer or a text box. Greenhouse lists all three places.
  4. Your data. Find where the CV is stored, for how long and how to delete it. Europass keeps a guest profile for 48 hours after your last visit; FlowCV says you can delete your account and data at any time.
  5. The cost of the second CV. Most people need more than one version. FlowCV's free plan has one resume, Jobstep's paid plans add unlimited downloads, and CitedCV charges credits for each build.
  6. Account and card. Note whether the free part needs an account and whether it asks for a card. FlowCV says no credit card is required; CitedCV asks for an email and a password, no card.
  7. A way out. Make sure you can download a file you can edit elsewhere, so your next version does not depend on the same site.

Why the text matters more than the price

None of the applicant tracking system (ATS) help pages cited here ties a clean parse to a paid tool. They talk about layout, images and file size. When Greenhouse cannot parse a resume, it says the file is only attached to the candidate and a recruiter types the details in by hand; that is not a rejection, but you still want your fields right the first time. A plain single-column template, free or paid, is what those pages point to.

Canva and Kariyer.net, read in a browser

Both are names people type next to 'free CV', and Kariyer.net is where many applicants in Turkey keep their CV. Their pages refused automated reading on 5 October 2026, so we read them in a browser instead, and the rows above say only what those pages state. For Canva, leave Flatten PDF off when you download: Canva's help says it turns the design into one image, which leaves no text to parse. The Canva page has the details.

Tool by tool, from each tool's own pages

Europass

Europass is the European Union's CV tool at europass.europa.eu. Its FAQ calls it a free set of online tools for everyone, whatever your nationality or country of residence. You first fill in a Europass profile, then make as many CVs from it as you want and pick a design. The FAQ says the CV is currently saved as a Europass PDF. As a guest, your profile stays for 48 hours after your last visit; registered users keep CVs in their Library.

FlowCV

FlowCV's pricing page calls its free plan free forever: one resume and one cover letter, unlimited PDF downloads, all templates and full design control, with no watermark or branding. Pro, at $5 a month billed yearly ($60) on 5 October 2026, adds unlimited resumes and cover letters, imports, a job tracker and AI features. If you move back to the free plan, your first resume stays editable and downloadable. The pages we read name PDF downloads and do not mention Word.

Jobstep

Jobstep (jobstep.io) is an AI resume tool with a Turkish-language site. Its free plan lists a resume score, AI resume creation, all templates and a job tracker. The monthly and three-month plans add tailoring a resume to a job, cover letters and unlimited downloads. The pages we read did not state how many downloads the free plan allows, and the plan prices, shown in euros, did not appear in the text we could read. Its FAQ says PDF is the standard export.

Google Docs templates

Google's help page says Docs has Google-made templates, resumes among them: open Docs, click Template Gallery, choose one and a copy opens. Google says anyone with a Google Account can create in Docs. File, then Download, offers a PDF Document (.pdf) or Microsoft Word (.docx), per Google Drive's help. Choose a template with one column of text.

Microsoft Word templates

Microsoft offers free resume templates that open in Word for the web, and a separate set it calls ATS-friendly, with clear sections for contact details, work history, skills and education. Microsoft's support page says the free web version of Word is available after signing in with a Microsoft account. To get a PDF, its resume help says to use File, Export, Download as PDF. A template labelled ATS-friendly is still worth the highlight test.

CitedCV

CitedCV is the site this page is on, so read this part with that in mind. The ATS CV checker is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. A new account, with an email and password and no card, gets 6 credits: enough for one quick draft of a general CV. Building more needs credits: a quick draft costs 6 and a full build 10; credits come in one-time packs, from $9 for 30 credits, paid once with no renewal, and prices are on the pricing page. 3 of the 8 templates are free and all are single column. Exports to PDF, DOCX and TXT cost nothing. It writes only from the facts you give it and asks when something is missing.

Who this page is not for

  • You want a highly designed, visual CV for a portfolio role. A design tool may suit you better; test its PDF the same way before you send it.
  • You want a list of every free builder online. This page covers only tools whose own pages we could read on 5 October 2026.
  • You already have a CV that works. Check it instead of rebuilding it: the ATS CV checker reads a PDF, DOCX or TXT with no account.

Other routes to a free CV

A builder is not the only free way to a CV that reads cleanly:

  • A blank document in Google Docs or Word, typed in one column with plain headings. It takes longer and gives you the most control.
  • Your university's careers service. The University of Utah's career services, for example, offer templates made by their coaches and advise against columns, tables, text boxes, coloured text and graphics.
  • The employer's own form. Many application systems fill their fields from your file; Greenhouse's candidate FAQ says you can review and edit parsed information before you submit.

When paying makes sense

Paying buys convenience, not readability: more versions, tailoring to each posting, cover letters, help with wording. If you apply to many jobs with different CVs, compare the cost of the second and third CV across tools, because that is where free plans stop.

Limits of this comparison

  • Pages were read on 5 October 2026. Plans and prices change; each tool's pricing page is the authority.
  • This page reports what each tool's pages say. We did not buy plans or test every template.
  • Where a page does not state something, such as Jobstep's free download allowance, the table says so instead of guessing.
  • Canva and Kariyer.net rows say only what their own pages stated when read in a browser on 5 October 2026; neither page gave a download format or full plan terms.
  • A free builder can produce a CV that parses well or badly. The template you choose matters more than the price.

Questions people ask

Is there a completely free CV builder?

Yes. Europass calls itself a free set of online tools for everyone, and Google Docs and Word for the web offer free resume templates with a free account. All three let you download a PDF, as read on 5 October 2026.

Which free CV builder has no watermark?

FlowCV says so on its pricing page: free downloads carry no watermark or branding. CitedCV exports carry none either. For any other tool, download a one-line test CV and look before you type everything in.

Can I download my CV as a PDF for free?

Yes, with every tool in the table: Europass saves a PDF, FlowCV's free plan has unlimited PDF downloads, and Google Docs and Word for the web export PDF. Jobstep's paid plans add unlimited downloads, so check its free allowance first.

Is Europass CV free?

Yes. Its FAQ calls Europass a free set of online tools for everyone, whatever your nationality or country of residence. You can use it as a guest, but a guest profile is kept only for 48 hours after your last visit.

Is FlowCV free?

Yes, for one resume and one cover letter, with unlimited PDF downloads and no watermark, per its pricing page on 5 October 2026. More resumes, imports and AI features need Pro, $5 a month billed yearly.

Do I need an account to make a free CV?

Not always. Europass works as a guest for 48 hours and CitedCV's checker needs no account. Google Docs, Word for the web and FlowCV need a free account, and CitedCV needs one to build a CV.

Is a free CV builder ATS-friendly?

It can be; the price does not decide it. A single-column template, contact details in the body and text you can highlight are what the ATS help pages point to, whether the builder is free or paid.

How many CVs can I make for free?

It depends on the tool. Europass lets you make as many as you want from one profile, FlowCV's free plan has one resume, and CitedCV's signup credits cover one quick draft, with credits for each build after that.
