Nurse CV for Ireland: NMBI recognition, registration and a CV that matches
Nurses trained outside the EU apply to NMBI in two stages: qualification recognition (€350), then registration (€145), often with an adaptation period or RCSI aptitude test between them. English scores are needed only at registration.1

Start with NMBI's two warnings
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) keeps the register every nurse in Ireland must be on. Its page for applicants qualified outside the EU opens with advice that shapes how you job-hunt: because the outcome cannot be predicted, do not move to Ireland or leave your job, and do not apply for nursing posts, until you have a registration decision. NMBI also says it cannot fast-track an application because you hold a job offer.
The second warning is about agencies. You must upload your own documents to MyNMBI and never share your login; NMBI says agencies uploading personal data for applicants breaches its policies and the GDPR, and only the nurse, not an agent, may pay the fee.
What to do this week
- Create your MyNMBI account and answer the classification questions. This step is free and tells you your group (G1, G2 or G3) and your document list.
- Send NMBI's Qualification Form to your school: the Head of Nursing Education completes it, with the official transcript and the programme syllabus.
- Send the professional experience form to every nursing employer since you qualified; each one describes your roles, duties and activities.
- Ask each regulator you have been registered with for a Certificate of Current Professional Status, issued within the last six months.
- Have certified copies and English translations made of every document not in English (the rules are below).
The NMBI route for a nurse trained in Türkiye
Which group you are in
NMBI sorts applicants into three groups under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. G1 and G2 are for EU and EEA nationals, their family members and people with refugee or subsidiary protection in Ireland. A Turkish national with a nursing degree from Türkiye meets none of those personal criteria, so the application falls under G3, the non-Directive route, which gets both an administrative and a qualifications assessment.
Stage 1: qualification recognition
An education assessor compares the theory and clinical content and hours of your programme with NMBI's standards, and may weigh extra courses and post-qualification experience. That is why the employer forms matter: without them NMBI says your experience cannot be considered. If a document is missing, you have six months from submission to supply it before the application closes.
The four possible outcomes
- Qualifications recognised: you go straight to registration.
- Further information required.
- A compensation measure is required: an adaptation period or an aptitude test, because your training falls short in areas you can make up.
- Provisional refusal, where the gaps in theory or clinical content are too large. Provisional decisions can be appealed.
Adaptation period or aptitude test
Applicants to the General or Psychiatric Nurses divisions may choose either; other divisions get adaptation only. An adaptation period is supervised practice at an NMBI-approved Irish health care facility, with at least six weeks of clinical learning that may extend to 12 weeks or more. You or a prospective employer must find the placement within 12 months of the decision letter, and NMBI puts you on its Candidate Register meanwhile.
The aptitude test is run by the RCSI Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. Part 1 is 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours with a 50% pass mark; part 2 is an OSCE of 14 stations, 10 minutes each, where you must be judged competent at every station. Each part allows two attempts. RCSI reports that on average 60% pass the OSCE at the first attempt and 70% of those who resit pass.
Stage 2: registration and English
For applications started online, English is proved at registration, not at recognition. Two of NMBI's three pathways rely on training or three years of practice in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US or the UK, so a nurse trained and working in Türkiye will normally use the test pathway.
| Test | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic (or Academic for UKVI) | 7.0 | 7.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0; at least 7.0 in three skills and 6.5 in one |
| OET (Nursing) | B (350 to 450) | B | C+ (300 to 340) | B | Grade B in three skills and C+ in one |
NMBI accepts one result only, never a combination of sittings, and no IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Online or OET at home. The result must be under two years old when you submit the registration application, and NMBI checks it itself using your Test Report Form or OET candidate number.
How long it takes
Once every document is in, NMBI's guide gives about three months for a G3 recognition decision and 20 working days for the registration decision, roughly four months in all. Compensation measures add to that, and the guide says successful applicants take on average 13 months from submitting documents to registration.
Your CV and the NMBI file, matched line by line
An Irish employer reads your CV next to documents NMBI has already checked. Every date, ward and title on the CV should agree with them. The sample lines are for an invented nurse, Elif, who trained in Izmir and has worked on a surgical ward since 2019.
| CV line | NMBI document it must agree with | Sample line |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Certified copy of passport | Elif Aydın (spelled as in the passport, with ı) |
| Irish registration status | Your latest NMBI decision | NMBI: qualifications recognition granted subject to RCSI aptitude test (General Nurses division), decision letter 03/2027. Not yet registered in Ireland. |
| Degree | Qualification Form, transcript and syllabus | BSc Nursing (Hemşirelik Lisans Diplomasi; NARIC Ireland: Honours Bachelor Degree, NFQ Level 8), Example University, Izmir, Sep 2015 to Jun 2019 |
| Clinical training | Transcript hours checked by the education assessor | Clinical placements as on transcript: surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, intensive care, community health |
| Each nursing post | Professional experience form from that employer | Staff Nurse, General Surgery (32 beds), Example State Hospital, Izmir, Sep 2019 to present; 7 to 9 patients per shift |
| Registration abroad | Certificate of Current Professional Status | Registered nurse, Türkiye, since 2019; no restrictions on practice |
| English | One IELTS or OET result under two years old | OET Nursing, one sitting, 02/2027: Listening B, Reading B, Writing C+, Speaking B |
| Compensation measure | Decision letter and RCSI result | RCSI Aptitude Test (General Nurse): MCQ passed 05/2027; OSCE booked 09/2027 |
Wording the status honestly
Write the stage you have reached and its date, never a registration you do not yet hold. NMBI asks every applicant to declare that the information given is complete, accurate and true, and an employer can search the register online. If you have only applied, say 'NMBI qualifications recognition application submitted 01/2027, decision pending'.
When the CV is actually needed
NMBI's advice is to wait for a decision before applying for posts. The exception comes with the aptitude test: RCSI says you must be legally entitled to be in Ireland on the test day, for example through an Atypical Working Scheme letter tied to a prospective employer, which needs an employment contract from that employer and not from an agent. RCSI recommends securing that contract before applying for the test. That is the point where a current, matching CV earns its place.
Fees, read on 13 October 2026
| Fee | Paid to | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Overseas qualification recognition | NMBI | €350 |
| Candidate registration (during adaptation) | NMBI | €20 |
| RCSI aptitude test, both parts, two attempts each | RCSI, by TransferMate | €2,800 (€2,500 if an eligible prospective employer pays directly) |
| Overseas registration | NMBI | €145 |
| Annual retention, once registered | NMBI | €100 |
| Appeal | NMBI | €150 |
On the aptitude test route the fees to NMBI and RCSI come to €3,295 before the English test, translations, travel and living costs. On the adaptation route the NMBI fees are €515; NMBI's pages do not state what a placement costs. RCSI says its fee has not changed since the first test in December 2015.
Certified copies and translations
NMBI wants certified copies of your passport or ID, any name-change document, the qualification parchment, transcript and diploma supplement, and your current registration certificate. The copy must be a first-generation photocopy of the original.
- Who may certify: a solicitor or lawyer, notary public, peace commissioner, justice of the peace, commissioner for oaths, or a UK post office.
- The certifier must confirm seeing the original and add full name, profession, stamp, signature and date.
- Translations: by a qualified translator, signed, stamped and dated, with a statement in English that it is an exact translation, and the translator's phone, address and email.
- Uploads: PDF, in colour, at least 300 dpi, with the passport's machine-readable zone unobstructed.

Where this page stops
- Midwives and nurses applying to divisions other than general or psychiatric nursing: adaptation is the only compensation measure, and the RCSI test described here is for general nurses.
- Nurses with an EU or EEA qualification, or EU citizenship: the G1 or G2 route has different documents and shorter timelines.
- The work permit: nurses are on the Critical Skills Occupations List, but DETE requires a qualification NMBI accepts; the critical skills guide covers the permit.
- The UK: NMC registration is a separate process with its own tests, covered in the NHS nurse guide.
- Which Turkish body issues a Certificate of Current Professional Status: we could not confirm it for this page; ask through MyNMBI.
Next steps
- Open MyNMBI and run the free classification before paying anything.
- Book IELTS or OET only when you are close to the registration stage, since the result must be under two years old then.
- Keep one master CV whose dates match the employer forms word for word, and update the status line after each NMBI decision.
- When you reach the stage of applying, use the Irish CV layout: two A4 pages, no photo, named referees. CitedCV can write that CV in English from the facts you confirm and put the registration stage in your own words; it does not deal with NMBI.
Questions people ask
How do I register as a nurse in Ireland if I trained abroad?
Apply to NMBI through MyNMBI in two stages: qualification recognition, then registration. Nurses trained outside the EU may need an adaptation period or the RCSI aptitude test in between.
What IELTS score do nurses need for Ireland?
IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, with at least 7.0 in three skills and 6.5 in the fourth, from one sitting under two years old. OET needs grade B in three skills and C+ in one.
How much does NMBI registration cost?
€350 for overseas qualification recognition and €145 for registration, plus €20 for the Candidate Register during adaptation. The RCSI aptitude test costs €2,800.
How long does NMBI registration take?
About four months for a G3 application once every document is in, according to NMBI. With a compensation measure, successful applicants take 13 months on average.
What is the RCSI aptitude test for nurses?
It is a two-part test for overseas general and psychiatric nurses: 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours, then a 14-station OSCE. Each part allows two attempts.
Can I apply for nursing jobs in Ireland before NMBI registration?
NMBI advises against it until you have a registration decision. If you need an Atypical Working Scheme letter for the aptitude test, RCSI says you need an employer contract first.
Can an agency submit my NMBI application?
No. NMBI says you must upload your own documents and pay the fee yourself, and it treats agencies uploading applicant data as a breach of its policies and the GDPR.
What should a nurse CV for Ireland say about NMBI?
The stage you have reached and its date, such as a recognition decision or a booked aptitude test. Never write registered nurse in Ireland before NMBI registers you.
