FlowCV alternatives, matched to what the free plan lacks
A FlowCV alternative is worth it only for what FlowCV's free plan lacks: Reactive Resume gives free Word and JSON exports, Europass a free CV in 31 languages, Novoresume one-off payment, and CitedCV text written from your own facts.1
Written 13 October 2026. CitedCV. How we write our guides
Name the gap before you switch
FlowCV describes its free plan as free forever: one resume and one cover letter, unlimited PDF downloads, every template and no watermark, with no card asked. People who search for something else have usually hit one specific wall. Name yours first, because each tool below fixes a different wall and gives up something FlowCV does well.
- You need an editable Word file. The FlowCV pages we read on 13 October 2026 name PDF as the download and list DOCX only as an import format.
- You need a second or third version at the same time, for different roles or languages, and the free plan saves one.
- You want your data on your own server, outside any company's account system.
- You want help with the words rather than the layout, and FlowCV's AI features sit in the paid plan.
- You would rather pay for a fixed period than hold a plan that renews.
Before anything else, save a copy of your FlowCV CV
Download the current PDF while it still opens in the editor. FlowCV says that if you return to the free plan, your first resume stays editable and downloadable while extra versions stay saved but locked, so a lapsed Pro plan does not delete anything. A fresh download still saves you a login later.
Test the PDF you downloaded
Drag your cursor across a line of the PDF. Lever's help centre says that a document whose text you cannot highlight is likely not parseable. FlowCV describes its exports as text-based PDFs with embedded fonts, so the test should pass, and then the same file can be imported by most of the tools below instead of being retyped.

What the table means for your decision
For one CV, FlowCV is hard to undercut: the free plan has no download cap and no time limit. The reasons to leave are format, versions, hosting and wording, not price. FlowCV's FAQ also says its two-column templates read cleanly, while suggesting one column if you worry about older systems. Greenhouse's help page lists columned layouts among the causes of a failed parse, so one column is the safer default in any builder.
Four alternatives, each for one gap
Reactive Resume: a free Word export and self-hosting
Reactive Resume (rxresu.me) is an open-source builder under the MIT License. Its site says every feature is free and there is no paid tier: 17 templates, PDF and Word downloads, an ATS checker, cover letters and a job tracker. It exports PDF, DOCX, Markdown and JSON, and the JSON imports back into any copy of Reactive Resume, including one you run yourself from its Docker image. AI help works only with your own key from a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini; without one, the site says nothing is sent to an AI service.
Strength: no lock-in and a real Word file at no cost. Limit: fewer templates than FlowCV, AI wording means setting up and paying for your own provider key, and the project is kept running by its author and contributors on donations.
Europass: a free CV from the European Union
Europass is the EU's CV tool. Its FAQ calls it a free set of online tools for everyone, whatever their nationality or country of residence, and lists 31 languages, Turkish among them. Strength: no plan and no payment, ever. Limit: the FAQ says the CV is currently saved as a Europass PDF, and a guest profile is kept only for 48 hours after your last visit, so register if you want to come back to it. The Europass CV guide covers the format itself.
Novoresume: a fixed period, no renewal
Novoresume, made by Novorésumé ApS in Copenhagen, sells Premium for a month, a quarter or a year, and its pricing page says the model is not subscription based and will not charge you automatically. Its terms give consumers 14 days from purchase to cancel and claim a refund. Strength: nothing to remember to cancel, and your information stays in the account after Premium ends. Limit: the free Basic plan is one version of a one-page resume with no cover letter, documents are saved only as PDF, and the terms require users to be at least 18.
CitedCV: wording built from your own record
CitedCV is the site this page is on, so weigh this paragraph with that in mind. It puts its effort where FlowCV does not: into the words, with a simple layout. It writes only from facts you give it (a form, an uploaded PDF or DOCX such as your FlowCV export, or answers to its questions), and each line carries the ids of the facts it was written from. Exports are PDF, DOCX and TXT. Strength: an editable Word file and wording you can trace back. Limit: 8 single-column templates with far less design control than FlowCV, and building costs credits after the 6 given at signup. Credits come in one-time packs, from 30 credits for $9, paid once with no renewal.
Which alternative fits which gap
Read across from the wall you hit. The last column is the honest cost of moving.
| If FlowCV falls short on | Look at | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| An editable Word file | Reactive Resume (free) or CitedCV (DOCX with every export) | FlowCV's template range and layout control |
| Several versions without paying | Reactive Resume, where every feature is free | Template choice; AI help needs your own key |
| Data on your own server | Reactive Resume, self-hosted from its Docker image | Hosting, updates and backups become your job |
| Paying once instead of a renewing plan | Novoresume Premium for a fixed period, or a CitedCV credit pack | Novoresume: a Word file, and Basic stays at one page; CitedCV: most design freedom |
| Wording from your own record | CitedCV | Most of FlowCV's design freedom; credits after the 6 at signup |
| A free CV with no plan at all | Europass | A Word file and most design choice |
| None of these | Stay with FlowCV | Nothing |
Moving your CV out of FlowCV in five steps
- Download the latest PDF from FlowCV and run the highlight test above.
- Select all, copy and paste into a plain text file as a backup; headings, employers and dates should come out in order.
- Import the PDF into the new tool. Reactive Resume imports a PDF, and CitedCV reads a PDF or DOCX in your browser and asks you to confirm each fact it found.
- Rebuild one version, export it, and open the export in the program the employer will use, for example Word for a DOCX.
- Only then cancel FlowCV Pro, if you had it, before its renewal date.
When staying with FlowCV makes more sense
- You keep one CV at a time and a PDF is all you send. The free plan already covers that with no download limit.
- Design matters to you. FlowCV offers far more templates and layout control than Reactive Resume or CitedCV.
- You write every word yourself and do not want AI wording.
- You are a student with a university email address. FlowCV gives 25% off Pro for three years.
How this page was put together
- Every tool fact comes from that tool's own pages, read on 13 October 2026 and listed under Sources. Plans change; check the pricing page before you pay.
- We did not buy plans or test exports in each tool. Where a page is silent, as FlowCV is on a Word export, we say so rather than guess.
- CitedCV facts come from its own product code and pricing configuration.
- The free CV builders page compares costs across more tools; this page covers only the reasons to leave FlowCV.
