Zety alternative: the trial terms first, then four other tools

Zety alternatives worth a look are FlowCV, Reactive Resume, Novoresume and CitedCV, each changing one Zety term: a $1.95 14-day trial that renews at $25.95 every four weeks, or a free plan that downloads only TXT.1

What Zety's pricing page and terms say

Most people look for a Zety alternative at one of two moments: when the free download turns out to be a text file, or when a charge appears after the trial. Both are written down on Zety's own pages. The table below is what they said on 13 October 2026, in US dollars as shown to us; the price at checkout can differ by country, tax and currency.

TermWhat Zety says
Basic packageFree: the builder, templates and cover letter builder; downloads in TXT format only
Pro packageA 14-day trial for $1.95, then auto-renews at $25.95 billed every 4 weeks; PDF, Word and TXT; unlimited downloads, prints and edits
Annual package$71.40 paid at once ($5.95 a month); auto-renews each year
RenewalAn active subscription renews as described on the offer page until you end the contract; the recurring charge is fixed at the price agreed at purchase
CancellingAny time, on the online cancel page under your settings or through customer service; Zety emails a cancellation number
RefundsYou may request one if you cancel before the end of the initial period, where one is offered; the terms also say the provider does not guarantee refunds
After cancellingYour documents stay in the account to view and edit, but you cannot print, download or share them without an active subscription
Who you contract withBOLD LLC, with Auxiliant S.à.r.l as merchant of record in some cases; the terms say the site is directed to people in the United States
DisputesBinding individual arbitration with a class action waiver, with a right to opt out set out in section 24 of the terms

What 'free' means at Zety

Zety's terms describe the free service as the resume builder with unlimited use of its content and the ability to download a free .txt version of your resume. A TXT file is not useless: it is what many application forms want pasted into a box. It is not, however, a file you can attach as a formatted CV, which is why the PDF and Word downloads sit behind the trial.

What the trial costs if you forget it

The trial is the step that surprises people, so here is the arithmetic from Zety's own figures. It assumes you never cancel and the price stays at the one shown on 13 October 2026.

DayChargePaid so far
Day 0, trial starts$1.95$1.95
Day 14, trial ends and the plan renews$25.95$27.90
Day 42, four weeks later$25.95$53.85
Day 70$25.95$79.80
Day 98$25.95$105.75
Annual package instead, day 0$71.40 once, renewing yearly$71.40 for the year

Billing every four weeks gives 13 charges a year rather than 12. If you expect to need the tool for more than about two renewals, the annual package costs less than the four-weekly plan; if you need one CV this week, cancelling before day 14 keeps the cost at the trial fee.

Before you cancel: download first

  1. While the subscription is active, download the PDF and the Word version of every CV and cover letter you want to keep. After cancelling, the terms say you can view and edit but not download.
  2. Download the TXT too, for pasting into application forms.
  3. Cancel on the online cancel page under your settings, or through customer service.
  4. Keep the email with the cancellation number. The terms say to contact customer service if it does not arrive.
  5. If you also want your documents removed, the terms point to a separate personal-data page; cancelling alone keeps them stored.

Where Zety is strong

Zety's builder is aimed at people who find writing the hard part. Its builder page describes step-by-step guidance, the option to upload an existing resume, and ready-made phrases, skills and accomplishments, written by experts or by AI, for your target role. The pricing page lists 18 or more templates, a resume check that it says can identify more than 30 issues, and Word export on the paid plans. For someone who wants a full first draft quickly, that is a real advantage.

The limit of ready-made content

Phrases written for a role describe what that role usually involves, not what you did, so every one needs checking against your own record before you send the CV. Zety's terms say it may use third-party AI tools and does not guarantee that their output is free from errors or omissions. That is a fair statement, and it puts the checking on you.

Four alternatives, by the term they change

Novoresume: no automatic renewal

If the renewal is what put you off, Novoresume also avoids it. Its pricing page says Premium is not subscription based and you will not be charged automatically; you buy a month, a quarter or a year. Its terms give consumers 14 days from purchase to cancel and claim a refund. The trade-off: every document is saved as PDF only, so there is no Word file, and its free Basic plan is limited to one version of a one-page resume.

FlowCV: a free PDF instead of a free TXT

If the TXT-only download is the problem, FlowCV gives what Zety keeps for paid plans: unlimited PDF downloads of one resume and one cover letter, all templates and no watermark, with no card and no trial. Its Pro plan, $60 a year when we read it, does renew automatically, and it can be refunded within 14 days. The pages we read name only PDF as a download, so it does not replace Zety's Word export.

Reactive Resume: Word export without paying

If you liked having a Word file, Reactive Resume says it offers PDF and Word downloads, along with its 17 templates, cover letters and a job tracker, with no paid tier at all. It is open source under the MIT License and can be self-hosted. What it lacks next to Zety is a library of ready-made phrases: AI wording works only if you add your own key from a provider such as OpenAI or Google Gemini.

CitedCV: different billing, different writing

CitedCV runs this page, so read it as our own description. It has no subscription: credits come in one-time packs, Starter with 30 credits for $9 and Pro with 150 credits for $29. A pack is paid once, never renews, so there is nothing to cancel, and its credits do not expire. Every export (PDF, DOCX, TXT) is free once a CV is built. The writing works the other way from Zety's phrase library: it uses only facts you supply and asks when something is missing, so the draft is slower and shorter if your record is thin. It has 8 single-column templates.

Resume.io uses a similar trial model to Zety, with a seven-day trial. Its terms are on the Resume.io alternative page.

Who should stay with Zety

  • You want ready-made wording to start from and are willing to check every line against your own record.
  • You need a PDF and a Word file of the same CV and want both from one tool.
  • You will finish within the trial and cancel before day 14, keeping the cost at the trial fee.
  • You apply for months and the annual package works out cheaper than paying every four weeks.

Limits of this page

  • Every Zety fact comes from its pricing page, builder page and terms of use, read on 13 October 2026. Zety's terms say prices may change with notice, so confirm the amount at checkout.
  • Prices were shown to us in US dollars. Zety also runs country versions of its site, which we did not compare.
  • We did not buy a plan or test a cancellation; we report what the pages say.
  • Facts about the other tools come from their own pages, read the same day; CitedCV facts come from its code.

Questions people ask

Is Zety free?

Partly. The Basic package is free and lets you build a resume, but downloads are TXT only. PDF and Word downloads come with the Pro trial or the Annual package, per its pricing page on 13 October 2026.

How do I cancel my Zety subscription?

On the online cancel page under your settings, or through customer service, according to its terms. Zety emails a cancellation number; if it does not arrive, the terms say to contact customer service.

Does Zety give refunds?

Sometimes. Its terms say you may request a refund if you cancel before the end of the initial period, where one is offered, and also that the provider does not guarantee refunds.

What happens to my resume after I cancel Zety?

It stays in your account to view and edit, but the terms say you cannot print, download or share it without an active subscription. Download your files before you cancel.

Why was I charged $25.95 by Zety?

That is the renewal shown on its pricing page: after the 14-day trial, the Pro package renews at $25.95 billed every four weeks unless you cancel first.

Is there a Zety alternative without a subscription?

Yes. Novoresume sells Premium for a fixed period and says it does not renew automatically, Reactive Resume has no paid tier at all, and CitedCV sells one-time credit packs that never renew. FlowCV Pro does renew.

Who owns Zety?

Its terms of use name BOLD LLC as the contracting company, with Auxiliant S.à.r.l acting as merchant of record in some cases, and say the site is owned by Bold Limited.
