What are knock-out questions on a job application?
Knock-out questions are application questions whose answer can end your application automatically. Greenhouse, Lever and Workday let an employer reject or archive candidates by answer, so read each one closely and answer truthfully; answers are checked later.1

Before you press submit
Treat the yes/no and drop-down questions as the part of the form that decides most. The CV is read by a person later; a knock-out rule runs the moment you submit. A careless click on 'No' can end an application your CV would have won.
- Read every yes/no and multiple-choice question twice. Note words like "currently", "at least", "now or in the future" and "full-time".
- Answer what is true today, not what you hope will be true by the start date.
- Count thresholds (years, hours, levels) the same way on every application; the worked count further down shows how.
- Keep the answer consistent with your CV. If the CV says B1 German, do not tick "fluent".
- If an honest answer needs context, put it in a free-text field, the cover letter, or a note to the recruiter.
- Save a copy or screenshot of your answers before submitting, so you can answer the same way at interview.
How Greenhouse, Lever and Workday apply knock-out rules
All three vendors document a way for employers to act on answers automatically. What follows comes from their help pages, read on 13 October 2026. They describe what an employer can set up, not what any one employer did.
| System | Where the rule lives | Questions it can act on | What happens | Rejection email |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greenhouse | Application rules on the job post: Auto-Tag, Auto-Advance, Auto-Reject | Auto-reject: Yes/No, single-select and multi-select questions only | Rejected with a rejection reason, optionally tagged; no new-application alert to the team | Optional, from a template the employer picks |
| Lever | Automation workflows with the trigger 'Application form submitted' | Conditions on chosen application forms and questions | Add tag, auto-archive with an archive reason, change stage, send email | Optional with auto-archive; can be sent with a preset delay |
| Workday | Questionnaires on the job requisition, plus condition rules | Questionnaire answers; multiple-choice answers can carry scores, including negative ones | A total score for recruiters; Workday can be configured to decline ineligible candidates automatically | Not described on the pages cited |
Greenhouse: application rules
Greenhouse lists three application rules. Auto-Tag is on the Core, Plus and Pro tiers; Auto-Advance and Auto-Reject are on Plus and Pro. Auto-reject works only on Yes/No, single-select and multi-select questions, so a free-text answer cannot trigger it. Auto-rejected candidates do not appear in new-application notifications, but they are not deleted: recruiters can filter all candidates by rejection reason or tag, and each auto-rejection adds an entry to the candidate's activity feed.
Lever: automation workflows
Lever's product overview says automation workflows are commonly used to set up knock-out questions and to archive and notify candidates who are not a fit based on their answers. A workflow pairs a trigger, conditions and actions. Each executed action is written to the candidate's profile story with the date and the workflow's title. Lever's application form offers single-line and paragraph text, dropdown, file upload, multiple choice, checkboxes and a university picker; the employer can also export every candidate's answers to a CSV.
Workday: questionnaires and scores
A Workday job requisition can carry up to four questionnaires; primary, secondary and supplementary questionnaires are part of the initial application, and each holds up to 50 questions excluding branching ones. Multiple-choice answers can be scored, Workday totals the score, and Workday's course manual says negative scores can indicate an unfavourable answer. Recruiters see a Total Score column and a Questionnaire Results tab per candidate. Workday's own example question is 'Legal Work Eligibility', yes or no, marked required.
LinkedIn Easy Apply and SAP SuccessFactors
Both have their own versions: LinkedIn screening questions can archive applicants automatically, and SuccessFactors prescreening questions can move an application to Auto-Disqualified. Their pages on this site cover the details.
Rules an employer wrote, not an AI verdict
A knock-out is a rule a person configured: if the answer is X, reject or archive. It is not a judgement on your CV. That is why a rejection email can arrive soon after you apply, though Lever lets employers delay it and Greenhouse makes the email optional. AI matching is a different feature: Greenhouse says its Talent Matching scores candidates for recruiters and does not automatically advance or reject anyone.
- A knock-out acts on the answer you chose, not on how your CV parsed.
- Your CV can be excellent and still lose to one 'No' on a required question.
- The rule only fires on the questions the employer attached it to; most other questions are read by a person.
Common knock-out questions and honest answers
These are the questions that typically carry a rule. The guidance is ours, not a vendor's: the aim is an answer that is true and that you can repeat at interview.
| Question | What it usually checks | How to answer truthfully | Where to add context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are you legally authorised to work in [country]? | Right to work on day one | Yes only if you hold that right now, not if you plan to apply for a visa | Free text or cover letter: your visa route and timing |
| Will you now or in the future require sponsorship? | Whether the employer must sponsor a visa | Yes if your current permission will not cover the job for its full length | Name the route (for example Skilled Worker, EU Blue Card) |
| Do you have at least N years of experience in X? | A minimum the hiring manager set | Count only experience in X, the way the question words it | A line in the CV that shows the dates |
| Do you hold [licence or certificate]? | A legal or contractual requirement | Yes only if it is issued and valid; "in progress" is a no | Expected date of issue, in free text |
| Do you have a degree in [field]? | A minimum qualification | Answer for the degree you hold, with recognition if asked | The degree recognition status abroad |
| Can you work on site in [city] / relocate? | Location | Answer for the start date the posting gives | Your move date, if you are relocating |
| Can you start within N weeks? | Notice period | Count your actual contractual notice | The exact date you are free |
| What level is your [language]? | A working-language minimum | Use the level you can show, ideally a CEFR level from a test | The certificate and year |
Years of experience: a worked count
Example, constructed for this page. An applicant did a six-month data internship during her degree (July to December 2021), then worked full time as a data analyst from July 2022 to September 2026. The question: 'How many years of professional experience do you have in data analysis?' with the options 0 to 1, 2 to 3, 4 to 5, 6+.
- Full-time analyst work: July 2022 to September 2026 is 4 years and 2 months.
- With the internship: 4 years and 8 months. Both totals fall in "4 to 5", so the answer is the same either way.
- If the question were 'at least 5 years', the honest answer is No; she can still name her 4 years and 8 months in a free-text field.
- She writes the same count on every form and uses it at interview.
Work authorisation and sponsorship
These two questions catch more international applicants than any other, because 'authorised' means now, and 'sponsorship' includes the future. If you will need a visa, say so; the CV pages for applying abroad and for UK sponsorship explain how to show your route. A 'Yes' you do not hold is found out before day one, as the next section shows.
Why your answers get checked later
- In the UK, GOV.UK says an employer must check that a job applicant is allowed to work for them before employing them, and can face a civil penalty for employing an illegal worker without a correct check.
- In the US, USCIS says employers must complete Form I-9 for every person they hire, citizens and non-citizens alike, to verify identity and employment authorisation.
- Prospects, the UK graduate careers service, says the facts on a CV are easy to corroborate and that lying on your CV is a criminal offence in the UK.
- Your answers stay on file: Lever keeps form responses on the profile and can export them; Workday keeps a Questionnaire Results tab; Greenhouse records each auto-rejection in the activity feed.
So an answer that gets you past the rule but is not true moves the problem to the offer stage, where it costs more. An honest "No" with context sometimes reaches a person who can make an exception; a false "Yes" cannot be fixed later.
Questions you can decline
Not every question on the form screens you. In the US, many forms include voluntary equal-opportunity questions on race, gender, veteran and disability status. Greenhouse's EEOC report page lists 'Decline to Self Identify' and 'I don't wish to answer' options, says the responses cannot be associated with individual applications, and says users only see anonymised demographic data. These answers are reported in aggregate, not used as knock-outs.
General information from the vendor and government pages listed under Sources, not legal advice. Which questions an employer may ask differs by country and job.
Who this page is not for
- You want to know exactly which rule one employer set. Vendor pages describe what is possible; only the employer knows its configuration, so ask the recruiter.
- You want answers that get past every rule. This page does not offer them; a knock-out exists to filter on facts.
- Your CV did not parse into the form. That is a layout question for the page on resumes that do not parse.
If a question knocked you out
| Situation | Next step | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| You misread a question and answered wrongly | Email the recruiter with the job title and the correct answer | Not every posting names a contact |
| You narrowly miss a threshold | Apply anyway only where the question allows it; otherwise look for a posting at your level | A required rule is binary |
| You need sponsorship | Target employers and routes that sponsor; say so up front | Some roles are closed to sponsorship |
| A certificate is pending | Reapply when it is issued, or ask whether a pending result counts | Postings close |
| You suspect AI screening, not a rule, rejected you | Read the page on opting out of AI screening for your rights | Opting out does not remove knock-out rules |
For the CV that goes with these answers, keep dates, levels and licences identical to what you ticked. CitedCV writes a CV only from the facts you give it, so the dates and levels on the CV are the ones you entered; whether they match the form is still yours to check.
Questions people ask
What is a knock-out question on a job application?
It is a question whose answer can end your application automatically, such as work authorisation or a required licence. Employers attach a rule to it in systems like Greenhouse, Lever and Workday.
Why did I get rejected minutes after applying?
Most likely a knock-out rule fired on one of your answers. Greenhouse auto-reject and Lever auto-archive both act on submitted answers and can send a rejection email; Lever allows a delay.
Should I lie on screening questions to get past the filter?
No. Right to work, licences and dates are checked before or after an offer, and Prospects notes that lying on a CV is a criminal offence in the UK. A false yes only moves the rejection later.
Does Greenhouse automatically reject candidates?
Only if the employer sets an auto-reject rule, available on its Plus and Pro tiers, on a yes/no, single-select or multi-select question. Its Talent Matching AI does not reject anyone automatically.
Can Workday automatically reject my application?
Yes, if the employer configures it. Workday's documentation says questionnaire answers can feed condition rules that decline ineligible candidates automatically, and answers can carry negative scores.
How should I answer "Will you require sponsorship?"
Answer yes if your current permission will not cover the whole job, now or later. Then name your visa route in a free-text field or cover letter so a person sees the context.
How do I count years of experience on an application?
Count only the experience the question names, from start to end dates, and use the same method on every form. Say in free text whether internships or part-time work are included.
Do I have to answer the diversity questions?
No. In Greenhouse those questions offer 'Decline to Self Identify' or 'I don't wish to answer', and the answers cannot be linked to individual applications.
