Uploading your resume to a Workday application

Uploading a resume to a Workday application lets Quick Apply fill the form from your file, except Skills, Languages and any hidden fields. The account you create belongs to that employer's career site. Check every page before you submit.1

Check your CV for ATS problems, no account needed

Drop a PDF, DOCX or text file, or paste the text. You get a score, the problems a parser trips on, and your CV as a parser files it.

Runs in your browser. The file and its text never leave this device.

Before you click Apply: three decisions

A Workday application is a multi-page wizard run by the employer, not by Workday as a job board. Three choices made before the first page save most of the later fixing.

  1. Pick one email address for every Workday employer and keep it. Workday's own setup guide describes the Candidate Home account as one you register on that employer's external career site, and the employer can make it compulsory before you apply.
  2. Choose the file. A PDF or DOCX with selectable text and no images; Workday itself recommends resumes without images or image-based styles. Whether PDF or Word suits better is covered on the PDF or Word page.
  3. Open a plain text copy of your resume in another window. You will paste role descriptions and type skills from it, and pasting from plain text avoids carrying formatting into the form.

If you have five minutes to spare

Run the file through the free checker at the top of this page. It shows your resume with formatting stripped and filed into sections, which tells you roughly what an autofill will have to work with. It is our own reading of the file, not Workday's.

How a Workday application moves, page by page

Workday's Recruiting course manual for administrators describes the application as a wizard that takes the candidate through contact details, work experience, application questions, voluntary disclosures, terms and conditions, and a final review. Each Next saves your progress, so you can stop and return.

The ways to start an application

  • From your resume. Workday's career site documentation says Quick Apply populates fields on the job application from the candidate's resume or CV automatically.
  • From your last application. The course manual says candidates can reuse information from their previous job application, and the new form is prefilled.
  • From LinkedIn or Seek, where the employer enabled it: the manual says candidates can apply with the details stored in those profiles.
  • By signing in first. A signed-in Candidate Home user, or one applying with LinkedIn, gets existing contact information and experience preloaded.
  • By hand. Every field typed by you, which is the slowest and the most predictable route.

Why two Workday forms never look the same

Each employer configures its own. Workday lets employers build job application templates that hide or require sections and fields per requisition, and it lets them hide resume parsing for external candidates on jobs that do not need a resume. So if one employer offers no autofill at all, nothing is wrong with your file: that employer switched it off. Terms and conditions can differ by country, and a US employer may add the voluntary disability self-identification form.

Field map: what autofill fills and what you type

The table follows the order of the wizard. The middle column says where the content comes from according to Workday's documentation; where the documentation is silent, the table says so instead of guessing.

Wizard pageWhere the content comes fromWhat to check before Next
Contact detailsYour resume, your last application, LinkedIn or Seek, or your signed-in accountFirst and last name split correctly; phone country code; the email is the one tied to your account
Work experienceThe same sources; Workday says results vary with resume format and word orderEach role keeps its own employer, title and dates; no two roles merged into one; descriptions not cut off
EducationNot listed field by field in the documentation cited hereDegree, school and dates, as for any field you did not type
SkillsNever from the resume: Workday does not auto-fill SkillsType them in, using the same names your resume uses
LanguagesNever from the resume: Workday does not auto-fill LanguagesAdd each language and its level
Fields the employer hidesNot auto-filled, by designNothing to do; you will not see them
Websites and social profilesThe employer chooses which networks to ask for (Facebook, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, X, YouTube)Paste full links that open when clicked
Application questionsThe employer's questionnaire; the documentation does not describe them as parsedAnswer each one yourself; eligibility answers must match your resume
Voluntary disclosures and termsYouRead what you consent to; the terms can differ by country
Final reviewEverything aboveRead each page once more; the documentation describes viewing a submitted application, not editing it

Dates follow the career site's locale

Workday's course manual gives an example: with English (United Kingdom) as the site's preferred locale, date fields switch to the UK format, DD/MM/YYYY. A role you held from 03/04/2022 can therefore be read as March or April depending on the site. After autofill, open each role and confirm the month, not only the year.

Your Workday account belongs to one employer

Candidate Home is the account Workday gives candidates. Its setup page describes it as an account candidates register on the employer's external career site, configured in that employer's own tenant. Nothing in the pages cited here describes one login that works across employers, so expect a separate Workday account for each company you apply to. Workday recommends that employers require the account; where they do not, Workday turns on a verification email instead, to keep application data with the candidate. Some sites let you create the account after submitting, through a Sign In link at the top of the form.

What the account lets you do

  • See pending and completed tasks, and your draft and submitted applications.
  • See scheduled events, update your contact information and change account settings.
  • Receive requests from the employer: questionnaires, more information, events to schedule or cancel, documents to sign, a government ID to upload, or an assessment.
  • Set the language Workday uses to write to you: it takes the most recent choice in the account's Language field.

Drafts and withdrawals

The course manual says Workday keeps draft applications for up to two years, up to 200 drafts per candidate, ordered by the most recent edit. A Withdraw button next to an application needs a Candidate Home account and appears only if the employer set up a withdrawal option for the stage your application is in; if you do not see it, write to the recruiter.

Keeping many accounts under control

This is practical advice rather than vendor documentation: keep a short list of employer, career site address, the email used and the date you applied. A password manager saves the rest. When a reset email does not arrive, it is usually because a different address was used for that employer.

Fixing parsed fields before you submit

  1. Read the Work experience page first; it is where format and word order cause the most damage.
  2. Where a description came in garbled, delete it and paste the same text from your plain text copy.
  3. Split merged roles and delete duplicated ones; then confirm every start and end month in the site's date format.
  4. Type Skills and Languages in yourself. Their being empty after autofill is expected, not a failed upload.
  5. Answer the questionnaire from the posting, not from memory, and keep the answers consistent with your resume.
  6. On the final review page, check that the attached file is the version you meant to send.

CitedCV's CV review page offers your CV as plain text in the reading order a parser gets, with a copy button, which is handy for step 2. Any plain text copy of your own resume works just as well.

When to skip autofill

If your resume has two columns, a sidebar or text in the page header, the autofill tends to need more correction than typing from scratch would. The guide to resumes that do not parse explains those causes; fix the file for next time and fill this form by hand.

What the documentation says, with dates

Every Workday statement on this page comes from the pages below, read on 13 October 2026. Workday documents its products for the employers who configure them, so a candidate sees only what a given employer switched on.

HiredScore, Reference: Candidate GradesGrades A to D for how well the resume matches the job description; described in recruiter views2023-06-23

The grade you never see

Employers that add Workday HiredScore get a grade from A to D per candidate, based on how well the resume matches the basic and preferred qualifications in the job description. The documentation places it in recruiter views and does not say candidates see it. That grade reads your resume, not the form, which is one more reason to upload a file whose text comes out clean. The ATS score page explains why no outside tool can show you this number.

Where this guide stops

  • It cannot tell you how one employer configured its form: which fields are required, whether autofill is on, or whether you can withdraw. Only that employer's site shows it.
  • Internal applicants at a Workday employer apply through a different, internal flow, which this page does not cover.
  • It is not about Workday as HR software for employees, such as payroll or time off.
  • It does not reproduce Workday's parser. No outside tool, CitedCV's included, can.

Next steps

  • If the autofill came out badly: the guide to resumes that do not parse lists the documented causes and a fix order.
  • If the same employer uses Greenhouse or Lever for another role: their forms work differently, with a shared candidate profile at Greenhouse and no documented candidate account at Lever. Each has its own guide.
  • If you are deciding between PDF and DOCX: the PDF or Word page compares what each vendor documents.
  • If you want to know what a score from a CV checker means: the ATS score page.

Questions people ask

Why does Workday make me create an account for every company?

Because the account belongs to each employer's career site. Workday's setup guide describes Candidate Home as an account registered on the employer's external career site, and the employer decides whether it is required.

Does Workday autofill skills from my resume?

No. Workday's resume parsing documentation says it does not auto-fill Skills or Languages, nor fields the employer has hidden. Type your skills in using the same names as on your resume.

Should I use autofill with resume or apply manually on Workday?

Use autofill when your resume is one column with clear headings, then correct the result. With columns, sidebars or header text, typing by hand is often quicker than repairing the parsed fields.

Why are my dates wrong after Workday autofill?

Partly because date fields follow the career site's locale. Workday's manual says a UK locale switches dates to DD/MM/YYYY, so check each month after autofill.

Can I edit a Workday application after submitting?

Not according to the documentation cited here. Candidate Home lets you view submitted applications and update your contact details; for anything else, contact the recruiter or withdraw if the employer offers it.

How do I withdraw a Workday application?

Through the Withdraw button next to the application in Candidate Home, where the employer set it up. Workday shows the button only when the current stage has a withdrawal option.

Why is there no autofill option on this Workday job?

Because the employer can hide resume parsing for external candidates on its application templates. Workday documents that setting for jobs that do not require a resume.

What file should I upload to Workday?

A PDF or DOCX with selectable text and no images. Workday's documentation recommends resumes without images or image-based styles and does not list file types on the page cited here.
